Unfortunate that it lifts so much, sometimes down to frame composition, from the Oshii film  :zzz

I really like the visuals, they're clearly taking a lot of cues from the movies and manga, but still making it feel distinct and interesting. Also, those giant holographic people are amazing why don't we have those right now.

From what they've said about it, it sounds like it's going to be more about Kusanagi dealing with her past from a point where she's already The Major, rather than being a Batman Begin-style origin story.

That's what I got from the trailer, yeah.

Let's be honest, The Major isn't a well known character in America. Something like that is needed.

I actually think it could be a clever move. I remember thinking with GitS "How is this going to be a movie? With all its philosophical/technological psycho babble. I watched the movie again last week and I was like "I'm not so sure this can work as a Hollywood action movie. It's quiet and meticulous." Seeing that they're backing up from the psycho babble to focus on an origin story might not be a bad idea. Making it more about the Major than the GitS itself. That might not be a bad idea as far as Hollywood goes.

The "shelling" opening scene is probably the most recognizable scene in the entire franchise [except for maybe the skyscraper drop, which is also in the movie], you really can't have the first ever American adaptation of GitS and not have that in there.

Well one thing about modern movie adaptations of other visual things is for maybe actual geek market reasons, they tend to stay true to the aesthetics. Though I am actually surprised how much this has stayed true, right down to the Kenji Kawaii music. If Making of a Cyborg plays in that movie trust me the movie will go up 5 points form me.

Yet, that scene highlights a problem I may have. In the anime it ends with a shot of her mundane, personality-less life. Which to me is kind of the point of the first GitS movie. Struggling to understand identity in ever growing technological world. Highlighted by a cyborg woman and a thing perhaps born from the internet. I mean in the end it's a story where the case the Major is on just happens to highlight her own issues, it's not about her.

My problem is that I fear this movie will lose some of that subtle characterization and storytelling. Be a straight up origin story. Hearing things like "You're the first of your kind" and "they didn't save you, they took it away from you" highlight something that may miss the point of the first movie. Even Stand Alone doesn't go full blown origin story. Obviously 2nd Gig has hints and allusions, but even then it's not about that.

Still, it could tell it's own interesting story, but I feel GiTS is the perfect place to tell how technology effects and shapes life. One of my favorite little episodes in the first season of SAC is the episode where the guy put his brain in a tank. It's a small episode, not even anything deep. But still a cool little tale about inputting living will through technology.

Still, honestly this is probably the first major adaptation of something I really care about and probably shaped my entertainment worldview. Sure I loved things like Power Rangers and Transformers as a kid, but I don't have real nostalgia or dullsions that these things were anything that they weren't(except for Beast Wars). Even anime like Gundam Wing and Rahxephon I look back with admiration, but also a realization of their silly aspects. Things like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Evangelion though have had a profound and everlasting impact on me. They are why I got into anime, they shaped the kind of aesthetics I like, formed my taste, and much more. So I do really care about how they are shown.

But I do want American Adaptations, because I want these things introduced to as many people as possible. I think Scar Jo is honestly a great choice. I think the look of the movie is great. I just hope it is good.

Watched Cloud Atlas.  It was pretty uneven, and I had trouble trying to figure out what artistic message siblings were giving with the use of the actors in different roles. However, by the end of it I was enthralled and highly involved. I can't think of a better word movie to watch right now, with Donald Trump in preparation to drive out people who are different.

I had the same reaction; lots of nice scenes that felt vaguely connected + the novelty of race switching held a moderate interest for the bulk of it, but the back quarter really pushed it into something else for me entirely.

just finished The Green Room and Neon Demon. Neon Demon was zzz; far too indulgent and forgiving of refn's worst tendencies. pretty imagery, some nice art-school semiotics... left me totally flat. somehow he didn't even make me wince with all the wild shit that should on paper.

The green room tho, yeeesh, I felt like i was going to pass out from nerves the entire time I watched it. interesting contrast of films between the two; green room is a totally familiar conceit but is completely fresh. great movie that I could probably never watch again.

I love it but it's not for everyone. I rewatch it every year or so when I'm feeling really down. In fact it gets better on rewatches, you spot things and follow it better. Great soundtrack too.

I'm already planning a re-watch with my wife. I think she'll like it. I'm still working out why some characters were consistently bad (misguided), while others were switched between sympathetic and antagonistic roles.

The race switching was also a daring risk that doesn't entirely pay off. I felt seriously uncomfortable at the appearance of the first caucasian actor in prosthetics to remove his epicanthic fold, but oddly I calmed down when they put Keith David in the same thing. It moved from representational to a theatrical conceit, somehow ablating the racial baggage it carried for me.

Can either of you confirm whether or not Jupiter Ascending has worth or value?

No on Jupiter Ascending. Went and saw it with the wife. Lots could be said about it. I think the best way to sum it up is that when it sends the screen shows "Directed by the Wachowskis" It felt more like a "Here's the idiots responsible for this piece of shit." and less of a "ta-da!"

but yeah, Jupiter Ascending is traaaaaaash. Eddie Redmayne is laughable in it.
From time to time my wife will drop that awful, "But...I like dogs." line and we'll fall over laughing. Really a terrible movie. I'd rather watch Airplane vs Volcano again. Twice.

Jupiter Ascending was very awful. I'm struggling to think of something nice to say about it.

I love how the armor is literally Mass Effect.

Had no idea what this was and surprised to find out that it's a long-running French sci-fi comic series that has been around since the 60's.  There's even a French/Japanese 'anime' version up on Crunchyroll.  Apparently the creator also has accused George Lucas of stealing a bunch of his stuff for Star Wars, including the designs for the Millennium Falcon and 'slave Leia'.
:leon

Hmm, don't know about this. I was never against the movie, but I don't think making it an origin story for her is really what I wanted.

I feel like they have already missed the point and made a safe " Ima living cyborg movie". Robocop basicly.

There's some parts of this trailer that are almost spot-on from some of the stuff seen in the anime, but if I wanted to watch that...I'd watch the anime.  It looks cheesy as fuck and once again I find it almost comical that most of the cast are caucasians.  I guess it's fine for Batou and if they go with the excuse that it's the major's prosthetic body that appears to be white...sure...but still.  Just...lol.  And that haircut.  :rofl

And damn it, fuck the bodysuit.  Where's the leather one piece? :drool

Ghost in the Shell looks like the cyberpunk movie I always wanted to see as a kid (but was repeatedly let down with crap like Johnny Mnemonic).

I feel like it's a property that's been cribbed so many times that it can actually feel kind of forced or cliched when you finally watch it. Kind of the same experience people had with LOTR and Mad Max.

First time I didn't watch the GitS trailer with the sound.
Welp at that origin angle they're seemingly playing up in the trailer. :doge
Guess it's somewhat novel compared to the source (or the other adaptations) but I'm not excited about that. None of the Shirow stuff is really great to be condensed in a couple of hours anyway, and even the first Oshii films suffered from cutting a lot of the unit dynamics out out of necessity.

Hope there will be insectoid tanks.

I'm kind of worried about Kruse's role in this story. Seems like a waste to use him and not do the Individual Eleven thing. What made him an interesting angle in 2nd Gig was not his small connection with the Major, but his fantastic depiction of a "Someone's enemy is another's Freedom Fighter".

Suicide Squad Extended Cut Scenes, until they're taken down, for an easy 12 minute version:

Apparently this version was the original cut, that the studio cut down even more, and so that long list of scenes that got posted after release aren't even included in this like all the Harley/Joker abusive relationship stuff. Tho the road scene is pretty neat.

Sounds like a trend at Warner. :lol

EDIT: Guess there's maybe more though I don't really remember what's actually new since like most of it was in the trailers: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4e_aUnhj6rq1WRFltAg5Kh1W5XZjrJOZ

Watched Harry Potter in the adaptation of Joe Hill's Horns. The physical effects are great. The CG ones, less so. The "big" reveal is obvious, and I wasn't liking the movie until I realized that the real mystery isn't the "who" so much as the "why," and it's on the wrong "who." So in the end, I liked it despite feeling kind of corny, kind of cheesy, and generally sad. Actually I appreciated all the sadness in it. Also, FANTASTIC song choices throughout the entire movie.

Fantastic Beasts is a lot of fun. I'd watch many more movies in this universe. No need to tie into Potter either, it's just an interesting setting / world that we've only gotten a narrow view of so far.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Farrell to Depp is a downgrade. I'm interesting in Grindlewald story, but not really in the way they're looking to tell it. Scamander, the Goldstein sisters and Kowalski are plenty compelling enough without a heavy handed "hey remember this bad dude from Harry Potter?" running around every movie.

Saw Fantastic Beasts. Kids didn't like it because the story was too convoluted. I thought it was good because of the supporting characters. It's actually a pretty funny movie. The CGI was a little uneven, but the set design was immaculate.

The reveal at the end was stupid.

Maybe some genius can break the movie into 3 parts and make it work. But if they try to cram it all into a 2hr 40 minute movie, it will fail.
