I would watch Solace if Sir Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell engaged in a climatic Scanner duel at the end.

man, that would be awesome. In fact, it might interest you to know that...

Serial killer movies are pretty much always friggin ridiculous, even the really good ones (Seven, Silence of the Lambs) have some pretty damn outlandish elements, but they tend to hold on to some thin veneer of respectability just so they can justify themselves to the adult audience they're presumably aiming at. More films should glean lessons from the superlative The Crimson Rivers, which was nutso but fully on purpose and with as little pretense as possible.

The Ring remake was pretty great, though.

IT WAS! And it also went to sizable effort to reduce the Japan-specific elements of its story. The distorted photos of the cursed victims, that's just something every Japanese understands culturally, so shifting it to being specific to Samara's trauma was fantastic.

Bridget Jones's Baby - The much later sequel has finally closed making $24.1 mil domestic and $211.8 mil worldwide on a budget of $35 mil. While the long delayed rom-com bombed in the US we can see the series is just as strong as ever overseas, especially in the UK where the film finished as the current #1 highest grossing movie of the year in that country, making $60.9 mil.

I loved it.

Finally got around to watching this since it dropped on Netflix this month. And just...wow, what a movie. Not all of it really works and some parts of it don't entirely make sense, but as far as building a tense, incredibly dark, creepy, and unrelenting supernatural horror film this really nails it.

The latest Scorsese sounds decent, not the least because it seems the films is not afraid to speak about faith without being a tract. The only thing bothering me is the fear it might end up too similar to Joffé's Mission which has a mirror story, but with a japanese skin. Looks good though.

EDIT : Wait, the Garth Jennings animation film Sing is out just now ? I've seen trailers for it several months back !

So I heard but that's not really the issue I have. Anteriority doesn't insulate it from similarity as a film compared to an other film. Then again, not a major problem even if it turns out to be true.

The last king of Scotland

Whitaker is excellent, obviously.
Otherwise... I always have a level of uneasiness with those not-quite historical flicks. I understand why you generally need to condense and tidy up thing in a form conductive to a script but despite the mission statement to stay true of the spirit of the real horrors surrounding Amin Dada, the very last stretch of the film does end up being a tad crass and trying to insert itself with the subtlety of a crowbar into the Entebbe episode.

Overall though the biggest problem is a rather hazy structure, a common occurence in movies trying to encompass such a long period of time (You would never guess 5 years are supposed to have passed). It hurts both the portrait of Amin Dada (mostly reduced to act in private) and the personal journey of the protagonist who seems to have been basically vowed by a speech, a few parties and a couple of lectures without any insights on his (supposedly) strong beliefs in the regime's benevolence at one point of the story. All characters except for the dictator ended up being a bit lifeless (the two love stories in particular), puppets disposed to fill in the gaps between each of Whitaker's scene.

Not a big fan of the visual aesthetic either.
However the production was generous enough to have a pretty sick collection of afrobeats.

man, I love that movie. Its such a great antidote to the whole 'history through the eyes of a white guy' thing that's so prevalent in the genre by having said white guy be a real self serving POS. Its as bleak and cynical as a film about its subject ought to be.

Speaking of grim periods of history, Jackie concerns itself with the period of time immediately following the aftermath of JFK's assassination through the week following. But other then a reenactment of history its also about people who keenly aware of their places in history and do their best to act accordingly. Its a sneakily piercing look at some people who were best known for being symbols, and how they bear the responsibility of being that. Jacqueline Kennedy remains somewhat unknowable, but that's kind of the point.

That was surprisingly underwhelming looking. Looked like the most basic and typical "Alien" type sequel imaginable. I did'nt care for Prometheus, but the trailers were mysterious and exciting. This looks like a by the numbers Alien movie. Also, I've disliked the female lead in everything I've seen of her and her brief snippet of saying the F word was already cringe inducing.

I don't know, this project has never excited me probably because it lacks a hook. Prometheus already did the origin and not well, but one movie is really all I would want. Not an entire series. So far I'm just not sure what the point is.

Did the Prometheus scam serve any purpose ? The trailer seems to paint the most derivative Alien sequel possible, one even more generic than the prequel that at least had some weird ass shit for itself, and doesn't seem to build up a lot on it except for Fassbender and the black goo. Yet another blue-collar crew in a leaky spaceship, another exploration of a derelict, another egg-hatching, black goo contamination, and alien attack through a transparent curtain shower.

It looks stale.

The music sure does ruin whatever feel they aimed for. Looks meh but will be pretty no doubt.

They keep trying to recreate Alien/Aliens but miss a key part: having an interesting or badass crew and a cool main protagonist.

Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah. Prequel trilogy levels of trash. If real I'll go back to pretending only two movies exist.

"Canon" is a scourge, I'll never understand why directors are so eager to excruciatingly try to shed light on evocative mystery and generally in the process encapsulate exciting universes in little bottles, like model ships. Then again a lot of people love that, guess it's exegesis for the geek age.

Battle Los Angeles by J.Liebesman
Well, I expected worse, really, but by doing a war platoon, view from the ground flick, the movie holds up at a basic level though it is so run-of-the-mill it's average if not mediocre. Characters are too waffle thin to really elevate it, even if Eckhart is decent as a broody tortured sergeant. Same with the aliens, the design is nothing too exciting. I'm not sure it was a wise move to have the platoon being, of course, involved in a key pivotal role by the end, it detracts from the whole point. All in all it is slighty better than something like Battleship.

Hancock by P.Berg
I guess the film should earn a couple of points from trying to do a superhero flick not rooted in existing material. But otherwise, it shows that the project had a difficult development because the film doesn't really know what it wants to be (with a weak & low energy "climax"), is mired with a weird non existent love triangle and the second half is outright vague and confusing. There isn't a lot going on with the action either...

Also caught a few minutes of "Young Tiger", a 1973 film starring Jackie Chan as a thug and antagonist. Looks pretty dreadful and the copy available is terrible (looks like something above VCD but below DVD quality  :yuck) and the beginning of the 2014 Monkey King, a Chinese extravaganza starring Donnie Yen (and a few other HK stars, Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok, Louis Fan) in a ape outfit. The intro, a battle of the gods in heaven, has poor VFX and gaudy colors. Legend of Zu doesn't look so bad now... I think I'll take the Stephen Chow comedy over this. EDIT : I learn Stephen Chow directed one version in 2013 with a sequel in production (directed by Tsui Hark :hyper). I meant A Chinese Odyssey from 1995.

Enough Netflix mediocrity from now on  :doge

Did anyone see Assassin's Creed?

It was pretty bad. Maybe getting a director who directs art movies was a bad choice for a movie about dudes jumping around and killing people. The movie takes itself to a fault in storytelling, scene direction, and acting to the point that it becomes too much to handle. AC has a cool sci fi premise that under scrutiny is dumb, but the key is too never highlight that. Hide it through levity or something. The movie has no levity and is so serious that you get millions of shots of people looking intense while talking about curing violence. It's just dumb and the movie doesn't know it.

Men in Black 3 by B.Sonnenfeld
Color me surprised, it was a good film. A little low on the jokes, the action and still rehashing from the first film (some new up to date celebrity cameos to project in the background of the MiB hall...), but it has a real story to tell and even if it falls prey to the usual flaws of sequels tying everything in suffocating canon, the script and pacing is good enough. The villain has a nasty streak which brings some punch and levity. It is surprising and it's touching. The fact that it was a long in the tooth sequel probably worked to its advantage as it trimmed a lot of the baggage that bloated MiB2. Really it's the sequel done right this time, J jumping back in time to save young K (a terrific Brolin) proves to be a much better avenue for character development than the flat love stories and the fill in the blanks amnesia of 2 that barely existed between the "obligatory" gimmicks (while arcing towards pretty much the same point : explore the past, give depth and a sense of bond).
Bit of a pity to not use Emma Thompson ( :mouf ) more but heh, what can you do.
