The Lighthouse feels like one of those movies you shouldn't be sober for. The more inebriated the better.

Nah standard backpacker meets hot fellow backpacker female (not a euphemism)  they fuck, madness ensues, with spooky sexy results.

Tonight I'm watching the child's play remake.

Just finished it, not that bad, I've seen remakes far more butchered than that, *cough Blair Witch*

I feel they could have done a lot more to make it about smart homes etc, could have even not used the licence.

But eh, just use popular pre existing universes so people go watch it...

New Suspiria 4K restoration getting a release in a limited-ish run. Color correction overseen by the original DP and featuring HDR. Just a heads-up for any interested.

weird titling it gretel and hansel, I expect the quatering to say *checks notes* "Go woke, Go broke, SJW madness"

It's probably because there was that Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters shit film, which I would also try and avoid association with.

Looks like a solid horror, probably gonna be just alright, but it has a bit of those VVitch vibes, so i'll give it a shot once it's on VOD.

Took me a good Google Translate and then fumbling around where the hell the name of the movie is...

For those who weren't gonna bother themselves, the movie is called Hell Girl.

I know nothing about the anime it's based on. Is this supposed to be good? The trailer made me think it's just some cheepo anime live action crap.

It's a live-action movie based on an anime, so cheepo anime live action crap sounds about right.

My favorite Japanese actress of the past few years who I have immense hope for is Suzu Hirose. She has been part of a few amazing movies like Our Little Sister and Rage. She even won best supporting actress in The Third Murder, but I found that movie to be rather average compared to the two previously mentioned. But she is an incredible talent and I'm always on the lookout when a movie with her is announced. Not everything she takes part is is meant to be a winner (some of the movies I noticed are just mega popular popcorn flicks), but when she is part of something that is out to be true art (ok yeah that sounds pretentious) I am eager to see it. Sky is the limit with her.

Edit: Stupid Rotten Tomatoes didn't even add her into the cast for Rage (under the name Ikari).  :maf

Oh yeah, Ryuichi Sakamoto composed for Rage (Ikari). Man is a treasure.

Watched Zodiac.

Hadn't seen it in a while but this is one of Finchers' finest. Tense and well acted from start to finish and an amazing level of detail.
Was Leigh Allen the Zodiac? Kinda weird that a guy so obsessed with press and publicity probably died along with his most well kept secret.
Even now with DNA and everything we still don't have conclusive evidence on the identity of the Zodiac. Committing not 1 but possibly 5 or more 'perfect murders'.
Or as he or she claimed, 37.

https://zodiackiller.fandom.com/wiki/Arthur_Leigh_Allen

I guess fingerprints could be manipulated/faked somehow, but the DNA one makes it more doubtful that he was.
The handwriting thing, always sounded like bullshit pseudoscience in the first place.

The list against him, compiled like that, is crazy, although you could easily dismiss all the testimony about what he did or did not say, as just Don Cheney lying.

The movie really makes you think it was him though.  :doge

I'm not an expert but was there any proper DNA sample collection by police at this point of time (I would imagine not) ? IIRC digital fingerprints evidence is a lot less reliable in real life than what is commonly presented in fiction, relies a lot as well on the quality of what was sampled.

Did Universal Studios Horror Night last night and one of the mazes was Rob Zombie's House of 1,000 Corpses which I'd never bothered watching since all the Rob Zombie movies have reviewed pretty poorly in the last 20 years. But the maze was fucking goofy in a grindhouse fun way so it got me interested in watching the movie.

Was actually pretty fun in that it's silly and over the top and often nonsensical. Feels very self-aware retro grindhouse throwback with some great performances by the psychos like the main Sid Haig Captain Spaulding clown guy. The direction is a mess and amazingly inconsistent and it's not really a good movie, but it's a fun cheesy ride for horror fans. I've heard the sequel The Devil's Rejects is a better film but also drops the cheesy retro charm so idk if I'll like just a badly directed psychos going psycho serious film. But I guess I'll check it out. The 3rd film comes out in a few days in theaters and on streaming next month.

I think that's how the book is as well. When I was looking up stuff about ALA, I kept seeing comments on reddit/message boards about how great Zodiac was as a book, but not as a true case file type of deal. This also reminds me of the time I found a Zodiac message board that did tours of murder scenes and claimed they had found the killer, but it was a pay message board and I sent an email like "yo that's gross dawg" and got some weirdo cryptic threat from a dude running a pay to post Zodiac message board  :hans1

I don't think reviews really apply to Zombie, at least in my case. I initially let reviews dissuade me from his filmography, but there's some true horror brilliance in his works (underneath the mountains of schlock, which can be appreciated in their own right.)

Lords of Salem remains one of my all-time favorites.

His insistence on putting his wife front and center into everything he does and highly sexualizing her borders on Kevin Smith tier "can you believe I get to FUCK this person" pathetic bullshit, but it might actually be sadder since Rob Zombie is a very successful rock star aggro dude and not an obese comic nerd who probably should be thankful someone is letting them fuck her.

Milla Jovovich is a top ten of all time bae so I completely understand him putting her in starring action roles so she stays in prime shape

On the subject of zombie, his particular schlock aesthetic (incl music) does nothing for me at all; which is fine, his output is meant to be polarizing.

I'm still going to go with Rob Zombie because again, he's a successful rock star and presumably has had the opportunity to smang many a 5 star big titty goth chick and instead parades his thin blonde small tiddied sometimes dressed up to be kinda goth but really kinda trash wife in a LOOK WHAT I GET TO FUCK fashion. Also Paul WS Anderson made Mortal Kombat and Rob Zombie made Halloween 1/2. Also because Milla Jovovich was in movies for years before she married Paul WS Anderson and did an endless stream of Resident Evil movies, whereas Sheri Moon Zombie wasn't even an actress until Rob Zombie decided he was now a director and I don't think she's done any work that wasn't with him as the director.

I also like how it doesn't give you all the answers. You're sort of forced to actively participate in the different thinking of the characters.
One such strong moment is when Graysmith confronts Toschi about Rick Marshall and he finds out that this 'big discovery' he made was already investigated and ruled out.

The movie plays with feelings of 'reward/disappointment' quite a bit.

"If you sneak a peek at Moon's credits, you may notice she only appears in her husband's films. The two work well together, and Moon adds a lot of creative input to Zombie's scripts. In an interview leading up to the release of 2016's horror-thriller, 31, the actress admitted she used to worry about being labeled the "director's wife.""

I guess he just really loves his wife and they get along great so he includes her in all of his work. Which is fine, it's more just the way he frames her as a sexual object in everything I find to be laughable in the Kevin Smith way of how he talks about his wife considering he's a big rock star and not a guy who literally cries over Batman comics.
