I dunno. I didn't really care super strongly for the entire series. But Season 1 was (IMO) the strongest BECAUSE it had the Laura Murder thing going on. I do agree with ABC that that shit should've wrapped up, and season 2 gives the strongest episode of the series with the Leland reveal, but after that they take like 5 episodes before the paranormal element comes back, which at that point it's like "why didn't Cooper chase Bob or at least try to flush him out?"

Billy Zane for 5 episodes though: :lawd

Edit: I do need to get around to the "Return"/season 3, but Showtime wants like $40 on Google Play TV right now which is serious "fuck that" territory for me.
You'd probably hate Return with a passion, it's very InlandEmpire-style Lynch (very dark and absurd) though it still has a lot of humor, it's in general quite different.
I thought it was amazing though.

Jojo Rabbit too.

Luckily, my local art house theater isn't getting Lighthouse and Jojo rabbit until the next week. Seeing Zombieland 2 on Sunday and Parasite maybe Thursday.

Is Zombieland 2 expected to be good? Seems like a sequel that could turn out really bad and everyone wonders why there was a sequel in the first place.

Watched Joker. I think Potato said that it would have been a better movie if it wasn't tied to a comic book. What I will say is that it didn't feel like a comic book movie. Although, I'm not sure I would have bought into the Joker persona if it were not in the Batman universe. And so I am kind of caught in two minds on that. You go with it because it is a well known villain, but yet, it doesn't quite feel like it is in the Batman universe.

Jay And Silent Bob Reboot: Was very much what Kevin Smith has been saying about it- that's a sequel, reboot, remake, and parody of all three all in one.  Pretty stupid, goofy fun and the kind of thing you'll want to watch if you liked all the older "Viewaskewniverse" stuff that ended with Clerks II.  Has a lot of the same people back playing the same roles and lines referencing previous moves or slightly changed-up from what was said years ago.   You can tell this was made on a low budget and I suspect that's why this "road movie" cuts out what should have been a huge chunk of travel hi-jinx and gets to Hollywood faster than expected.  The plot also feels kind of rushed.  This doesn't really matter for Jay and Bob, but Harley Quinn Smith as Jay's daughter and friends just sort of do a pretty blunt sympathetic character turn all of a sudden at one point.  It also gets super, super cheesy when they get to the comic-con parody that makes up for the last act of the movie...but it's OK considering what this movie is.  The credits show a lot of stuff that was cut out of the movie and then ends with years-old footage of Stan Lee and (fat) Kevin Smith having fun.   :'(

Also- I don't usually go watch movies in the middle of the week, and not usually alone, but nobody else was gonna go see this and I read it was only playing for two nights, so battled traffic and just made it to the show.  Then before the movie plays, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes come on for a pre-show roadshow talk-thing and Smith goes "Welcome to the sneak preview!  We're touring and showing the movie, then talking about it around the country, and when we come to your city the movie will open up at all the theaters in your area!"  :lol
:dead

But hey, they gave out a free movie poster.

Didn't make it to Jay & Silent Bob, so finally watched First Reformed. That was interesting. Really nice looking and going to back to essentially a 4:3 aspect ratio after all these years definitely makes the shot framing distinctive. Great performances and it's a interesting story mixing religion and environmentalism. Wasn't sold on the ending though. It's ok but wanted something more satisfying in the end.

Also started watching the new Creepshow and pretty fun.

First Reformed was probably my favorite movie from the last 5 years (or at least top 3).
I know some argued it's just a copy of Winter Light or many other nihilist-core, but i find that quite unfair.
It's great to see Paul Schrader hasn't lost his touch after all.

Yeah it was me who said that.

In retrospect, I think it would be more accurate of me to say that I would have enjoyed the film just as much if it weren't a comic book movie.

I have enjoyed plenty of bad comic book movies simply because of the characters/franchise. Joker I enjoyed because it was a good film.

The best compliment I can give any franchise movie is that I would enjoy it even if it was removed from the franchise.

Honestly I think the movie is even worse if you take away the little comic connections the movie has.

Without the concept of this being the origin of the Joker....you just kind of have a movie about a dude with mental problems in a unrelenting depressing life. Which is to say you have a movie really about nothing. The movie already has little to say.

Honestly, I thought it was a pretty bad movie. Just so boring.

tbf I don't think James is the brightest :trumps When you watch him and Mike converse in some videos, they often seem genuinely stupid. Not stupid in the sense of shitty, but literally dumb. Except for knowing a lot about the making of old movies and NES games. :doge  I remember subscribing when he made things like 'Top 10 Jackie Chan fights' way back in the day, but nowadays I kind of hate-watch their channels out of habit.

Oh yeah James is obviously dumb as fuck. It's amazing he's been able to have the success he's had but the past 2-3 years I went from checking cinnemassacre  once or twice a week to once or twice a year if it gets linked somewhere else and I think about it.  And then it's rare that I make it more than a minute into the video.

Saw

Parasite - Good drama on classism. A lot more serious than the last few films I’ve seen from Bong Joo Ho. Nicely shot and some great performances. Kang-Ho Song is fantastic as always. Gonna have to sit on it a bit more because I didn’t love it like some of the Oscar talk but it was a good film.

Zombieland 2 - I expected this to be mediocre based on sequels, the trailer and not remembering the original beyond the Bill Murray bit. But was entertaining and had enough laughs to keep it enjoyable throughout. Story is whatever, but the movie is just for the scene by scene jokes and plot doesn’t matter much. Good movie. Harrelson is great. Everyone else is fine.

Saw The Love Witch. thought it was great. So nice to see a movie like that. Plays like a B movie and yet underneath it all it's far from that. There were moments where I'm like "lol Midsommar ripped this movie off" in jest as I highly doubt it. It's just funny that there are bits and pieces that remind me of it pretty heavily. Some parts were sort of Twin Peaks-ey too. The director should get together with David Lynch and make some glorious monstrosity. I'd be there day 1.

I was so ready for this to be campy, B-movie fun but I was rather bored by the end of it  :-\

I mean I think The Host is mediocre as well and those three are all I've seen of his prior to Parasite. Parasite is definitely a better and less flawed film than those 3. But even Parasite didn't wow me like Park Chan-Wook's Korean films do.

Parasite's a real good film, but there's a lot of expectations with all the hype. Then again Burning got a fuckload of hype too for Korean cinema last year, and I like Burning but it didn't wow me either and I felt like it was unnecessarily long.

I might just be a big Park Chan-Wook fanboy though so I don't find any other Korean films as good as his stuff. Also I feel a lot of the themes of classism and wealth inequality explored in Parasite have already been explored in Bong Jo Hoo's other films, so it didn't feel particularly fresh/new/exciting idea from him. Just a very well executed film on those same themes he's been portraying for years.

*edit* actually I'm gonna revise my statement. I don't think Snowpiercer, Okja and The Host are mediocre. But I'd call all three good, but flawed B quality films.

I think Host is significantly better than both Okja and Snowpiercer, then Memories of Murder is a masterpiece in my opinion.

The Black Swan

I can't say it's a "bad" film per se. It's just, not good? I don't know if Natalie Portman really deserved the oscar for acting. Sure the dancing was impeccable. But the oscar is for acting not for dancing.

Snowpiercer went on too long and Okja was just bad.

I like them all and didn't think much of the Host back then. :yeshrug
It's possible I'll enjoy more the latter if I watched it now, maybe it flew over my head.

I liked Snowpiercer a lot but as far as the classism theme go I think Parasite is a lot stronger.

Hey Bebpo. I noticed on my flight that the movie The Handmaiden was available. Seeing as I'm flying back with the same airline I would bet on it still being there. Oldboy is one of my all time favorites and is the only Chan-wook Park film I've seen so far. Now that I know The Handmaiden is his project, I'm definitely gonna give it a watch. Not even gonna look at a trailer. I already read the brief synopsis when I was flipping through the movie selection.

My problem with The Host is as a monster/creature movie fan, it didn't feel like a particularly great creature flick and the CG monster was goofy as fuck. Like the family stuff was good and it's a good enjoyable movie, but I have certain expectations when it comes to creature flicks and it didn't get there.

I'll try to track down and watch Memories of Murder soon.

Handmaiden is fantastic, probably his best movie (i've only seen that, the vengeance trilogy, I'm a cyborg, and Stoker, though).

I'm not a big monster/Kaiju fan at all, tbh, i liked it mostly because of the family dynamics and the characters.
Maybe that's where the discrepancy comes from.

The trailer gives away the entire plot, looks good though.
