:brain I don't think critics raved about White Ribbon because of pictures alone, but because it's a rarely unfiltered depiction of proto-fascism and general malignity without trite narrative cliches. tbh one of the more disturbing movies I've ever seen.

The Lighthouse. Had me going from bored to engaged  several times. At first I enjoyed just watching the two characters go about their business. The way it was all shot made for good people watching. Like uhhh... what's that really early film from maybe the 19th century still. A Man and the Camera? I don't know. Movie historians should know what I'm talking about. Super old film of a person just capturing life around the city. Maybe Paris? Annnnyyyyyywhooooo, I eventually got tired of people watching and thankfully our characters actually started engaging. Various symbolism and imagery most likely went over my head. Would need a second viewing to be more observant. I like how as the characters descend more into madness we actually learn more about who they really are on the inside. Are they both bullshitters? Perhaps.

Also, there are like 2 or maybe 3 really funny scenes in this movie. Absolutely hilarious. One being when

Willem's character puts a hex on Twilight guy because he said Willem's cooking sucks. So funny how Willem genuinely seems hurt. "But you like my lobster right? I've seen you like my lobster." Seems so gutted and then goes on his diatribe. Twilight guy then says "fine. Have it your way. The lobster is good"  :lol :lol :lol

and then when Twilight guy

finally loses his shit and goes on a laundry list of things that bother him about Willem. I'm so glad he brought up the farting. At first I was like "huh. None of them acknowledge that this old crusty bastard just farts about all the time?" But no no. Twilight guy points that out. And the jizz comment.  :lol :lol :lol "Jizzum"  :lol :lol :lol It's funny to hear someone say semen in that manner.
[close]

I liked the movie. At times it lost my interest, but then it would always pull me back in. Also, great sound design especially in the first quarter or so in the movie. Love the 4:3 aspect ratio. Love the black and white color of the movie. Willem is fantastic. Twilight Guy gets a pat on the back too.

Oh and mermaid pussy  :yeshrug

I never understood why people found Time of the Wolf boring.
One of the few post apocalypse movies that's not annoyingly stupid, even though it's a lesser Haneke in general.

There's just nothing to care about and it takes a good 45 minutes or so to realize what's actually going on if you don't look for anything beyond the summary in advance.

:brain I don't think critics raved about White Ribbon because of pictures alone, but because it's a rarely unfiltered depiction of proto-fascism and general malignity without trite narrative cliches. tbh one of the more disturbing movies I've ever seen.

We'll just have to agree to disagree because I thought it fell flat.

Child's Play (2019)

Meant to watch this during Halloween, but burned myself out in the first half of the month. There are a lot of pointless remakes, but this easily could not involve the Child's Play/Chucky branding and be its own thing, so what's the fucking point? The plot changes makes the actual Chucky doll unnecessary and pointless, could have been any smart device in your house. It changes the character and story to the point where it might as well be its own story entirely. Chucky is the spirit of a serial killer transferred into the body of a doll via voodoo. That's what makes it scary/entertaining/what it is. Having Chucky be wayward AI because a worker in a factory got yelled at by his boss so he decided to remove all the safety features is....not the character.

Tone wise it was very inconsistent, going from something akin to the first movie to closer to the Bride of Chucky versions to satire to borderline Robocop satire to gore fest to wink wink bullshit. I'm not sure Aubrey Plaza has had a single interaction with a child since she was a child before this movie  :lol She felt like the babysitter or cool aunt at best, but certainly not a mother. The kid playing Andy was fine, Mark Hamill as Chucky was fine but Chucky doesn't have a personality because he's just an AI system so it really could have been anyone doing the voice.

I just don't really know why this was made, especially as the original continuity was doing fine as a DTV series and is getting a TV series anyway.

Terminator was way better than Genisys.

The most awful and hilarious part though was when Sarah Connor goes:

"me and John changed the future, we prevented Skynet from existing. But then a robot came from a future that didn't exist and killed John."

and that's it. No further explanation.

I just thought Terminator Dark Fate was simply... okay. If you forget about Terminator and T2, it is I guess a passable action flick, but nothing more than that. If you start actually thinking about the plot and backstory, you realise the whole script makes little sense. It says it is a direct sequel to T2 yet makes what happens in that movie totally pointless. The reason for Arnie being in the movie made no sense.

In terms of a Terminator movie, I just couldn't help thinking, "okay this series is done now". It adds absolutely nothing new, and shits on what came before it.

The future that robot came from didn't exist...until John and Sarah changed the future in T2. I haven't even seen it and I understand it because all the sequels ignore No Fate But What We Make and hammer home that the same major events are destined to happen but each time they fuck around with time travel it changes some of the details.

I'm pretty sure that's the whole fucking point of the entire movie.

shut up, dumbass.  ::) She expressly stated that she changed the future therefore there is no Skynet to make T-800's anymore. THEN afterwards another one mysteriously appeared "from a future that doesn't exist," a complete misnomer, defying all sense. You're a dumb fucking dick for defending that.

There was no Skynet anymore but a different company rose up and filled that position and did the same shit because time can get wobbly but is pretty much set as far as major events in the Terminator universe. That's what the movie is about you stupid fuck.

I assumed the Skynet Terminators were sent out before the timeline changed. So they were from a time before Skynet changed.

I mean it’s Terminator so I don’t need it to make sense.

I mean John still existed and the timeline that led to his existence doesn’t exist.

I realize none of the movies make sense if you start to nitpick the time travel, but she specifically said they changed the timeline and THEN a Terminator "from the future that doesn't exist" popped up and killed him. She wouldn't say that if he did it before they changed the timeline, and if that's the case, they wouldn't have been able to change the timeline in the first place. That dumb line just irked me, and Steo is just being a contrarian shit, as usual.

I've just realised something lol

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I think I know the reason why they killed off John Connor. Well, apart from Edward Furlong looking a mess that is. Ultimately AI rises up and destroys mankind anyway, it just happens at another time. Considering John Connor's whole life was built up in anticipation of what was to come, wouldn't he still be in a unique position to actually lead the resistance? I mean it doesn't happen in the way it was originally supposed to, but it seems to be basically the same thing just a new brand. It was once called Skynet, now it is called Legion. And if you were going to make a movie that is a direct sequel, it would make sense to have John Connor in it for continuity reasons. Only they weren't going to do that because really what they wanted to make was a gender swap movie. And so a female John Connor. And John Connor would just get in the way of that.

I will say, I assumed he was sent out before the future was changed. That in itself seems kind of dumb though, and just served as a way to kill off John Connor to get him out the way. That however wasn't the dumbest thing about that character. The dumbest thing about that character was the fact that he grows a conscience, becomes a family guy, and starts helping Sarah Connor for some reason. Text her coordinates of terminators that have time travelled. Maybe it was explained and I missed it but, how the hell does he know so much about terminators time travelling anyway? Waht the fuck man

No I’m just don’t care about shitty writing trying to be introspective as clearly what the opening narration is going for is those audio diaries Sarah was making.

As far as she’s aware she changed the future and the terminator that killed John is from that future that didn’t exist. Which also fits the theme for her character and his. They have no purpose because they did their job and the fates they were supposed to have are no longer valid. Why would her opening lines which are supposed to feel like fairy entries need to get all technical when it seems pretty clear to everyone else but you that she’s talking just about the order of events.

Also why would she say “oh by a Terminator already lurking”? They clearly didn’t know or think that would happen as they were simply care free chilling in South America. All she knows is that it probably came from a future they changed and assuming based on what happen in the previous movies where despite being close to losing Skynet is able to send out terminators, that she just wasn’t aware of how many they sent. Hence from a future that changed.

As I said in my spoiler (which kind of seems pointless now since everyone is just talking about it anyway) why would it no longer be valid though? Because the future is kind of the same thing, it just happens at a different time and with a rebranding. Since John Connor's whole life was building up to this, and since both his mother and he himself have dealt with terminators on two separate occasions, wouldn't he still be in a unique position to lead a resistance? I mean obviously John Connor had what it takes to lead the resistance, that was already established, so why wouldn't he? At least he would be of some use considering what had already transpired. The threat isn't much different to what it would have been originally after all.

I just thought Terminator Dark Fate was simply... okay. If you forget about Terminator and T2, it is I guess a passable action flick.

The funny thing is Terminator 3 and Salvation are also often cited as that. I didn't like either of them but they aren't complete dogshit like Genysis. But that's the thing. Terminator and T2 are two of the greatest movies out there that still stand out. When the best you can do is passable, it's not going to cut it. Especially after we've already had passable and it didn't click lol.

Well yeah. I just can't see where the franchise can go from here. It just seems dead to me now.

It's funny actually because it seems to me like they were following the same model as Star Wars. Have it tie in to the previous movies to basically get the fans interested in it, but then basically just shit on those iconic characters in some way because really they didn't actually want it to be a sequel, really what they wanted to do is a reboot. It's like they kind of want you to forget about those movies. They're unimportant. That's exactly what I think they were trying to do with Terminator.

They have no purpose because they did their job and the fates they were supposed to have are no longer valid. Why would her opening lines which are supposed to feel like fairy entries need to get all technical when it seems pretty clear to everyone else but you that she’s talking just about the order of events.

Well I mean what I'm saying is that is thier supposed arc in this movie. It's kind of poorly done, but what I think they were trying to do with Sarah is that. Have her find a new purpose in training the next JC. Why they couldn't have that be John, I'm not sure. I think that could have been a cool character story, "I was supposed to be Jesus, I'm not anymore, maybe I should help the new Jesus".

And since Grace knows Sarah's fate line and we know she trains Dani, I think it's pretty clear that Sarah does train Danni to be the leader she becomes.

Gotta go woke.

Guess it doesn't matter since this is looking to be Terminator "three" version #4 (or #5 if we count the TV series that never finished) that gets ignored, if they even make another one after this.

I think the reason it couldn't have been John is that they wanted a female John Connor. It's that simple. Having him around just complicated things. And ultimately I think they wanted a clean break away from the original story.
