Sherlock Holmes - meh. Robert Downey, Jr. is very good but I'm not fond of Holmes being portrayed so eccentrically that he's pratfalling and generally the "fool" of the fool-and-straightman pair. Jude Law is without much personality, but inoffensive. Contrast with Legolas in the Pirates movies for "without personality -and- offensive." Rachel McAdams can't act. The Big Baddie, Lord Blackheart, er Blackwood, was visually pretty neat. I wasn't sure where they'd go with the black magic; it was fun to see a conspiracy movement have to face their own mythos, but otherwise it was unclear why Blackwood followed through in a way which would clearly be figured out by the one guy who wasn't falling for his schtick.

The Collector - Movie buys so much goodwill in the 1st part, it's amazing. Then obviously, it turns into a shitty by numbers horror movie of the likes we've seen hundreds of, and is more worried in creating a possible franchise than it is in entertaining the audience.

Start fast forwarding in the final 10 minutes. Piece of shit, why can't these fuckheads just make a movie that works on its own, without trying to make a goddamn horror franchise?

Where the Wild Things Are

Not so much a kid's movie as it is a movie about being a kid, in the words of the director. I'd have to agree with that. Most kids will probably be bored by the slow pace, lack of rainbow-colored sights, and lack of low-brow humor. This is a movie for the older generation that can remember just how hard it was being a kid. Basically, the story is about a kid who feels misunderstood and unloved learning to cope with and understand his feelings. Maybe they could have done this or that different, or had a more focused plot or whatever, but I loved it as it is. Really good movie.

I watched the movie Angel Eyes last night...

holy fucking shit!  The ominous beginning to this movie makes it seem like it's going to be some kind of thriller and the dude cuts people up and eats them and J Lo is going to have to hunt and take him down.  But no.  It's some whiny shit love-fest.  It's the worst fucking thing I've ever seen.  Holy God!

I saw Tim Burton's Alice... I can't explain it, but it really felt like it was missing something. The 3D was good, but fairly unnecessary. Also saw Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, which was extremely goofy and entertaining. Certainly one of the better kid's movies I've seen, I got enough laughs out of it.

I've always loved Alice in Wonderland, and the original ABC miniseries still holds up to this day, but I have no interest in the Burton movie. I don't know why. I might just be tired of the whole 3D fad.

Yeah, I liked it at first, but after talking to friend about it last night, I realized I really really liked it.

Children of Men
: Still an amazing movie if only for the long shots.

Descent Part Two:
Loses all of what made the first a great movie. Characters feel flat, sense of being trapped is gone.

The Others - good atmosphere and pretty good twists at the end which I like.  Kept me interested all the way though.

American Beauty - I really had no idea what this was about but I found it a great film, the only thing was it felt a lot longer than it actually was.

The River Wild - I haven't seen this for probably 15 years but I remembered really liking it.  I still really like it.

I can see that.

I'm curious about The Others because I've been told its basically Turn of the Screw.

Also, I finished all of Descent part 2 and yeah, its just terrible. They rely on cheap scare tactics, and the movie doesn't try to do anything different at all.

I'm not familiar with Turn of the Screw, but from reading the plot summary on Wikipedia, The Others is definitely in a similar vein.

Christian Bale is pretty good, though...he's really hit or miss, but he was great in The Prestige, The Machinist, and 3:10 to Yuma.  I think it just depends on the character he's playing and the director he's working with.

You're probably right. Maybe my eyes were fooled by the fact that he stars opposite the waif-like Jude Law, or the fact that he plays his character as such a brute. Whatever the case, I never really thought of him as a physically imposing guy before his role in Closer, nor have I really to the same extent in any film afterwards.

If there was trickery by all means do tell.

there was definitely trickery.  If you notice, at one point there is blood splatter on the camera towards that long take at the end, and there is no obvious cut, but at one point the camera tilts up and then there is no more blood splatter the next time you have a good view.

Hey dudes, everybody who dug Moon, you guys were right, you guys were way right.

I almost don't want to talk about it, I don't want to spoil the central plot conceit, which is so well done.  There are very few movies that aren't pure entertainment that really depend special effects, but here's one.  The quality of the FX, especially considering the comparatively small budget really is amazing.  I can't wait to see Duncan Jones' next feature.

Saw Sherlock Holmes last night.

Thought little of it. There were some funny moments, the costumes were dashing and the music was entertaining. Felt a little half-assed though. Comedy bits got no help from the editing and the cinematography was annoyingly bland when it was quite apparent that there were opportunity for better stuff, especially considering the nice backdrops. The CGI was strange as well. Also, I felt the whole "black magic" thing was a waste.

Final 30 minutes of Toy Story 3 leaves ShoWest in tears
Quote
So what can I tell you about “Toy Story 3” without revealing any significant surprises? … Er … Um … Well, for starters, you should bring Kleenex. Lots & lots of Kleenex. Because I can guarantee you that you’re going to spend a good portion of the last 30 minutes of this film in tears.

I mean, I sat in that hall today surrounded by hardened industry professionals. Exhibitors who care more about how much popcorn & soda they’re selling than the movies they’re currently showing at their multiplexes. And these jaded theater owners – as “Toy Story 3” entered the home stretch – were openly weeping. Tears streaming down hundreds of faces as the ultimate fate of Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the whole Andy’s Room gang was decided.

Speaking of which … I’m going to be very interested to see what sort of rating “Toy Story 3” gets. Because this movie gets really dark and scary at times. In fact, there’s one sequence toward the end of “TS3” where the toys are put in such peril (and then handle this literally horrifying moment with such grace, heart and courage) that I wonder if this moment in the movie may be just too much for little-little kids to handle. But then again – given how the sequence in question pays off, with this great character-driven “But of course!” moment (which got a huge reaction from the crowd today in Le Theatre Des Arts) – I honestly wouldn’t change a frame of this film.

Here’s something else that you’re going to want to do before seeing “Toy Story 3”: And that’s rewatch “Toy Story” & “Toy Story 2.” You see, Unkrich and Anderson have made a point of filling “TS3” with all sorts of witty tie-ins, clever call-backs to the first two films. And in order to really appreciate what Lee & Darla have done here, the first two “Toy Story” movies should still be fresh in your mind. (That way -- for example -- you'll realize that the last image in "Toy Story 3" echoes the very first thing that you see in the original "Toy Story.")

Another thing worth noting here is – while “Toy Story” was basically a buddy movie and “Toy Story 2” was more of a road picture … “Toy Story 3” – in its heart of hearts -- a caper. There’s at least one sequence (where I think it’s Dave Foley doing the voice of that Fisher Price phone) that gives off a strong “Ocean's Eleven” vibe. Which is another reason that it was so great that Pixar & Disney decided to show this work-in-progress version of “TS3” here in Vegas at the ShoWest crowd.

Funny Games
Cinema Paradiso
Blood Diamond
Martyrs

City of God
The Mist
In the Shadow of the Moon

Anyway, I just got done watching City of God again.  I haven't seen it in years and I forgot how fucking awesome it was. Great, great movie.

I feel kinda bad ragging on Green Zone, as its a competent enough film, and in many ways, is an admirable achievement.  But good intentions don't make for a good movie.  The plot is actually well done in that its an action movie dramatization of the early weeks of the Iraq war, you've got dramatic stand ins for all the key players, there's a fake Bremer, Chalabi, the works.  That the "plot" of a real and ongoing war was shoehorned into a fictionalized film is actually kinda cool.

Too bad that's really the best thing its got going for it.  Everything else just like a Bourne movie, but less fun and with a queasy sheen of making something entertaining that shouldn't be.  Like, its a movie full of facts for people who refuse to watch a documentary or get all their news from Fox.  Or it feels like an apology to the rest of the world for being total dickbrains back in 03.

In any event, as an action movie (Greengrass pioneers new levels of shakyness in his camerawork), its not so hot, but it has its good points here and there.  Jason Isaccs is never not awesome, and the rest of the cast is solid as well.  Its just that, its the rare film that suffers for having too much subtext and ambition.

The story of man who desperately wants to blend into the crowd. I don't really know quite what I think about this. The one thing that really stood out to me was the way it was shot, which was really good, but much of the rest of the movie left me a bit stumped.

I guess if I had to sum up the film, it's about a man who wants to fit in and be a part of what's currently popular, but, when it comes to acting, he's a complete coward. He watches through the window as the woman he was falling for was chased through the woods and gunned down. Then, at the end, when confronted with the man who thought he killed as a boy, he can do nothing but angrily accuse the man of being a fascist, in the hopes that the crowd will do what he can't. The first half to two-thirds of the film sets him up as a very serious man dedicated to his mission above everything else, but the end reveals him as nothing more than a hollow shell willing to fill himself with the stance that's currently in vogue. He has no will of his own and no strength.

Still, it's not something that I can easily say "This was really good" or "This was awful". I can appreciate it without making that sort of judgement, but I think it does have a powerful statement to make. So...anyway, I watched it.

The Conformist is one of my all-time favorite movies.  You know, before the DVD came out, the only way to watch it was dubbed?  I cried tears of joy when I bought the DVD.

I agree with your analysis of the character 100%, BTW.  I mean, that's why the movie is titled The Conformist.

It's a really political movie and I have no doubt I'd be able to appreciate it more if I was Italian and had grown up watching the blackshirts and seeing Italy get pulled into WWII.  So it's definitely a movie only someone of Bertolucci's generation could make.

If you like Bertolucci, watch 1900.  It's also out on DVD, and contains one of the best performances DeNiro's ever done, IMO.

Sounds like an old school action movie.
