Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers owns, Exile on Main Street is good but too long.

Exile is long, but it has little to no filler.  Like most double LP's, it's easier to get into if you split it up and don't try to listen to it all in one sitting.

I've never exactly been a fan of BEP, so I was unaware that they were partially formed from another group.

Discovered by Eazy-E of all people, as well!

...this came at the end of a week in which I was working my way through a bunch of my favorite 90s alt hip-hop classics (Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, Midnight Marauders, Melodica, Stakes is High, et al.).

You've got to check out People Under the Stairs if you haven't already - they would've fit in lovely with the stuff you listed.

Exile is a double lp? No wonder. The version I dled was in one folder and nothing hinted at it being an double lp. Most double lps I download organize the tracks via disc, but it's all on one thing here.

Yeah, it's fun to think what could have been had his label not dropped them after he died. Wikipedia isn't too clear on the specifics, but was it ever detailed why this album was never released?

And no, I haven't heard People Under the Stairs. I'll check em out, thanks

Hahahaha! I don't have stock in PUTS... I just think they're one of the few hip-hop groups out there that are still making that "golden era" style rap.

Also, Thes One is the first person to ever make me feel bad about downloading (we had a heated discussion about it on his message board and then we talked about it over a beer when they came to town) so I guess... the way I buy everything PUTS related nowadays, maybe I do have stock in them!

Regardless: "Carried Away" is fucking a good, perhaps the best thing they've ever done? Check that shit out!

Their gritty and noisy stuff is what got me hooked, but I fucking loooooooooove The Mollusk

Ween  :-*

I actually prefer their earlier stuff like The Pod, GodWeenSatan, Chocolate & Cheese, and Pure Guava over The Mollusk or pretty much anything else they've done but it's still all good.  I'm always down for some Ween.

pick any one, they're all good.  Campfire Headphase is the most accessible, where the other two are a lot longer and more abstract.

Ok, saw Islands live and uh, I don't know what to think.  Their music being all over the place genre-wise does not make for a very even live experience.  Also the fact that the main guy is an AMAZING guitarist (see: Arm's Way) and the latest album has almost NO MAJOR GUITAR songs, kinda is another weird factor.

It's like at times the show was rocking.  These times consisted of when:
A) They played a rock heavy song and it was intense and the main dude was jamming the guitar
B) They played a pop electro song and everyone was dancing around and it was like you were in a club for 5 mins (ie: when they played Creeper)

Then about half the show was:
C) They played mellow/weird stuff and it didn't really work that well live.  Like I love Foreigner on the Vapours album with its sitting on a beach feel, but it absolutely did not work live.

Then there were just meh things:
-The singer did not respect the audience AT ALL.  He never said a word besides "hello los angeles, how are you?" to which he didn't even let the audience reply.  He also did the whole "I'm a rock star" thing with shades and a cape and pretending the audience doesn't exist at all.  I'm guessing he's not a people person, which is fine as I'm not either, but you gotta respect the audience.
-They played sloppy.  The singer would come in late after missing singing cues a bunch of times and then try to catch up with the line.
-They were all drinking beer.  This is just a personal pet peeve of mine, but I feel it's unprofessional for bands to be drinking beer onstage between songs, especially if they're playing sloppy.  Just goes to the whole lack of respect for the audience thing.
-The setlist was really short because it was basically a "play the new album" concert and the new album is like 30-40 mins long.  The total setlist was maybe 70 mins.  Got on at 10:20pm, left at 11:30pm.
-I thought the band was a 6 member band, yet there were only 4 people there.  The violin was definitely missing and one guy had to do both keyboard and rhythm guitar.  I'm guessing they didn't bring their violin person because the new album has none.  This is probably why they didn't play Arm's Way stuff since that album is STEEPED in violin.  When they did play The Arm it felt really empty and missing pieces.  A shame because Arm's Way is my favorite album of theirs and I was hoping they'd play a decent amount of it.

I think they played everything off Vapours besides The Drums and Shining.  2 songs off Arm's Way: The Arm & Creeper.  5 songs off Return to Sea:  Rough Gem, Don't Call Me Whitney Bobby, Where there's a Will there's a Whalebone, and ended the encore with Swans.

Was still an enjoyable show and it had its moments of greatness, but would not rush to see them live again.

Oh and some dude was rocking a Half-life 2 shirt.  $10 says he was a gaffer.

That sounds like every underground concert ever.

And yeah Nick is a dick but he's one of my favorite dicks.  He's hysterical to follow on twitter, and this is one of my favorite tweets ever:

Quote
@NickfromIslands LCD Soundsystem reminds me of the grade 9 math teacher who pulls out his acoustic guitar to show you that he's "down"

And I mean, dude, not respecting the audience is pretty common these days, I've encountered.  Most audiences are fucking awful, I know I wouldn't.  Also, wtf is wrong with drinking beer during a show?  Whenever I've done it, it just leads to me having more fun playing with the band.  And, that sounds like a pretty normal-length concert to me *shrugs*

I think I remember hearing some of the dudes from Islands left to go back to school, thus the simplicity of Vapours (among other, personal reason for Nick).

Disregarding that though, Islands has always been fairly rough live, but it doesn't detract my admiration for the band.  I fucking love the new album, it's probably my favorite Thorburn project.

I dunno, the bands I've seen in the last few months have been really thankful of the audience that is coming to see them.  Los Campesinos!, Ramona Falls, NIN, Mad Caddies, etc... I mean without the audience, the fans, the bands have nothing.  Nobody buys music anymore these days, so their only real paying audience that thinks they are worth $$$ are the ones who come and see and support them.  I think being humble and appreciative and laughing and joking around with the audience builds a good atmosphere for the show.

And yeah, I really like Vapours.  Though I think Arm's Way is still my favorite of their 3 albums because of the excellent guitar work.

I'm seeing Regina Spektor on Monday and I hope she's a nice person.

What a bunch of crap. These are people that A) are actually aware of your obscure little band's existence and B) care enough to pay to see a performance from you; that's reason enough to at least pretend like you give a shit. I like Islands a lot, but come on now.

Anyway, Thorburn is an infamous douchenozzle, so the impressions aren't all that surprising. The beer thing is a pretty silly complaint, though

Like I said it's a personal pet peeve.  I go to a handful of shows (almost all small) each year and the bands are always drinking water between songs.  I just find beer drinking on-stage to be kind of ...unrefined?  Something I'd expect from a metal band, but not an indie band.  And like I said I wouldn't care so much if the playing hadn't been a bit sloppy.  Because then it comes across as the band is just drinking and fucking around and don't care about putting on a good show for the audience.

It's kind of like how I don't listen to cute girl music if they use the f* word and curse.  I feel profanity is harsh/ugly and is the exact opposite of cute.

I'm kinda the opposite. I like female singers in general, and like it more when they have filthy mouths. Pretty much why I dig on Lily Allen.

i blame the 930 clubs authoritarian rule. they don't allow fun in that venue, but, on the other hand, the music almost always sounds great.

Trying to listen to the Dead Man's Bones album, and I like it, but it just doesn't feel great. No songs have their own identity and when you put a children choir in every song, it loses its luster easily.

Robert Palmer had some pretty damn good white boy funk in the 70s:

Regina Spektor was amazing.  Her voice is so incredible and she did a good mix of full band, solo piano, solo guitar, keyboard, solo solo, and ended on a country song haha.  She was really embarressed and blushing at how loved she was and was thanking the audience and being friendly all the time.

The crowd though.  Man, WHAT THE FUCK.  San Diego is douchebag central after about 10pm it seems.  Everyone was drunk as fuck.  I've never seen so many people drunk at a concert.  And I don't mean drunk like me and you, but drunk like how the fuck is this guy standing and what is he doing here and not getting kicked out of a Vegas club.  Meanwhile during the concert the entire back by the bar sounded like that LOUD CROWD TALKING NOISE you have on sound effect cds.  This was the first concert I've been to where at the start of every song there were tons of "Shhhhh!!!!"  It was like being in college again.  I mean did you really pay $35 to go to the house of blues so you could sit at the back by the bar and pick up on drunk girls/guys while talking really loud and not giving a shit about the musician playing?  It seems there is a good crowd of San Diego douchebags who do exactly that!

Then you had the part where a dude (who is probably on drugs; it seems a lot of people at the show were on drugs) walks into the vip seating area next to the soundboard.  Steals a vip person's seat.  Stands up and lights a cigarette (this is an indoor downstairs show; no smoking of course cause everyone would die in a fire) and just stands and casually smokes and puffs smoke into the air during the show while holding his lit cig at his side until 3 mins later security walks up to him, grabs his cig and throws it on the ground stepping on it and then grabs him and throws his ass out of the place.  I heard elsewhere in the show there was a whole group lighting cigarettes who almost set the place on fire before getting thrown out.

After the show it was drunk city.  Everyone walking on the streets would go up to you and high five you and be like WE'RE SO WASTEDDDD, DUDE WHAT'S YOUR NAME.  YO PRETTY GIRL I'D HIT YA.  I'm so glad I didn't end up going to Western Law School in Downtown San Diego.

Oh and she drank...water

Sure, but she's not trying to sell herself as the cute girl pop idol angle so it's not an issue.
