Alright. The first trip on my journey outside of my comfort zone in the world of rock:

After first listening...

Fantastic. I used to be turned off by Pink Floyd. I don't know or remember why. I guess I heard songs I didn't like or something, but this was amazing from beginning to end.

I can't wait to listen to it tonight while in my bed, eyes closed, absorbing the music and lyrics. It'll be an interesting experience.

Going oldskool with this one... I remember the first time I heard it, must've been in like 10th grade or something, and it totally blew me away...

I'm on track 7 on Weezer's Blue album.

Don't see what's so great about it at all. I think I'll go back to listening to Pink Floyd and Beatles. The album just sounds incredibly generic and boring as far as debuts go, and compared to other 1994 rock albums like The Bends it's average.

The Wall is fantastic so far. Or at least disc 1. My problem with it so far is that it's too long. Dark Side of the Moon is the PERFECT length.

The Wall is fantastic midway through but the starting and ending are kind of sucky. But its an album that I need to listen from start to near finish if I want to listen to any of the tracks at all.

Pinkerton was less boring than Blue Album, but not much. I'm going to assume from the fact I can't get into these two reputable albums that Weezer isn't for me. Every time I listened to one of their songs before, I assumed they weren't, so it seems my assumption was correct.

David Bowie is next on my rock music plunge.

What is so great about them? Those albums are completely average and boring compared to their contemporaries like The Bends (1994) or The Colour and the Shape (1996).

Fantastic album, even if it's way different from the music I'm used to hearing, and makes me curious about what other Bowie I should check out. I'm thinking of Low or Station to Station next.

Is it a concept album?

Well, I'm doing a 2 album test for each artist for now. The ones I like, I'll get the rest of their discography. The ones I don't, like Weezer, I won't bother with after the fact.

I like Ziggy so I'm going to listen to Low next. After David it's NiN.

I love what I'm hearing on Ziggy Stardust. Such beautiful arrangements in the tracks. Moonage Daydream and Soul Love are quite amazing.

I love what.cd for features like this:

Once I go through my list this will be really helpful.

Low is kinda avant-garde, especially the stuff he does with Eno, so I don't know how receptive you'll be to that, but it's easily my favorite. Still, it's a pretty big transition from Ziggy Stardust.

Whatever you listen to from NIN, make sure one of those albums is The Downward Spiral. Everything before that has aged poorly, and some of releases after it are way too angsty tweenager-ish.

And yeah, the artist maps on What are fantastic. Those used in conjunction with Last.FM will have you sifting through discographies for days

Totally. Their first three albums (and parts of the fourth) are great, then they go down hill and turn in to some crap band.

There is even an EP where Bowie does the song Without You I'm Nothing with the band.

Holy shit. Low is amazing. The instrumental tracks don't even sound like they belong in the 70's. Even Kraftwerk's electronic music sounds like it belongs in the 70's, but Bowie's stuff in Low sounds straight from the 80's. Holy CRAP. There are only a few songs I dislike on this album, but I hope I warm up to them because the rest of the album is A+.

Backspacer. Comes out Sunday, big marketing push right now.

It's probably the most upbeat the band has been in awhile. It's a very lean, but mean record. I dig it.

It will probably be my next purchase when I pick up The Flaming Lips' new CD.

I really liked Downward Spiral when I first started listening to it. The first few tracks are really good. And then it gets boring. It's not so much that the tracks are bad, they're actually quite good; the album starts to overstay its welcome at that point.

My favorite albums tend to have 10-11 tracks and I'm of the opinion any non-double lp doesn't need any more than that.

Great album that starts great but leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Maybe time will give it a better taste.

This was my first sample of Nine Inch Nails and I'm DAMN impressed. The use of electronic mixed with 90's rock works extremely well, and there's a certain blend of genres that makes it almost feel like it's progressive rcok.

Really good album.

Excellent album. Way better than Downward Spiral, not because the music is better, but because it's more lean.

It has a dance oriented feel, a lot more than Downward Spiral, and I love it because of that. It truly feels like an 80's album.

This is my first Metallica album.

It was awesome. I liked all the songs except Battery and Damage Inc. When asked why by a friend, I told him I absolutely deplore the drums in both songs. They sound like the same drum beat in every thrash song ever and they overwhelm the sound of the guitars.  I HATE the drums in those otherwise good songs.

Fucking awesome album besides that.

Holy crap. Fantastic album. The only songs I'm not fond of on this are the folk rock songs. They suck.

Same thoughts as Let it Bleed. Awesome album, aside from the crappy folk rock.

So far, I'm amazed:

Pink Floyd - Amazing
David Bowie - Amazing
Rolling Stones - Great
Metallica - Awesome
Nine Inch Nails - Great

The only group that has not impressed so far on my list is Weezer, who are losers anyway.

I'm listening to Ride the Lightning now.

Led Zeppelin is next!

I think most of the Pink Floyd songs I heard prior to DSOTM were from Wish You Were Here or Animals or something, i dunno, because I found every song in DSOTM to be fantastic, and The Wall was no slouch either.

I don't remember what songs they were. Hell, I remember a bunch of Pink Floyd songs being posted on gaf a year or so ago and I couldn't get into those either.

I think that David Bowie song in that thread was the only Bowie I heard before listening to Ziggy Stardust. At the time I thought it was alright (mostly used  :yuck to troll :lol) but now I think it's fantastic.

Maurice:

I think Let It Bleed is good, but right now there's quite a few songs I'm meh on.

Gimme Shelter - Awesome
Love in Vain - Awesome
Country Honk - Ugh
Live With Me - Great
Let It Bleed - Alright
Midnight Rambler - Amazing
You Got The Silver - Meh
Monkey Man - Awesome
You Can't Always Get What You Want - Classic
Honky Tonk Woman - Awesome

Whereas Beggars Banquet is full of tracks that appeal to me more:

Sympathy for the Devil - Amazing
No Expectations - Good
Dear Doctor - Meh
Parachute Woman - Great
Jig-Saw Puzzle - Holy fuck nuts
Street Fighting Man - Holy shit
Prodigal Son - zzz
Stray Cat Blues - Amazing
Factory Girl - Great
Salt of the Earth - Great

I think Rolling Stones does really well on upbeat songs, but their more slow songs put me to sleep on these two albums. :(

The more country-based songs in Let It Bleed and BB really turn me off. Country music stands as the only music type I just can't listen to.
