came out today.  Not sure what I think.  Not feeling it so far though outside a few songs.  I do dig that all 3 of their albums have COMPLETELY different sounds.  But I dig the sounds of the other albums :(

Yeah, BrandNew got me all excited, but I didn't even make it all the way through :-\ I think the first song or 2 are great, but then it gets progressively worse -- unless it picks up at the end. Maybe I'll go finish it

I wasn't really feeling Vapours past the third song the first couple of times I listened to the album.  I gave it more time though, and by about 5 or 6 listens I started to really enjoy it, sans tracks 7 and 8.  All I can say is give it a few more listens - it's really quite different than what they usually sound like, yes, but I think it's definitely better than Arm's Way.  It's much more of a Unicorns album, if you ask me.

Yeah, it's been getting good reviews so I figure it'll grow on me.
I love Return to the Sea and think Arm's Way is crazy in a very good way.  I think Vapours is too mellow for my tastes though, I got into Islands because of their long always changing rock/pop songs like Swans and by this album I feel most of that is gone.

Still excited to see them at the Troubadour next month though.  Hoping they play some of my favorites from the previous two albums.

What are the best music blogs and podcasts?

NPR has two good podcasts dedicated primarily to new "indie" music (using "indie" as a vague genre label here for the sake of simplicity): All Songs Considered, which generally covers new releases and reissues, and All Concerts Considered, which is recordings of live shows by fairly prominent "indie" (again) musicians.  I'm not sure if All Concerts Considered would appeal too much to folks outside of the MD/DC/VA area since most of the shows are recorded locally at the 9:30 Club and, for me, there's some novelty at work there, but I think they regularly feature some pretty outstanding performances.

So do they cover rock, rap, the whole spectrum on All Songs Considered?

It's a podcast as well as a blog looking at your post above.

It's a podcast as well as a blog looking at your post above.

They rarely cover rap, although yesterday's episode featured the new Black Keys project.  I can't think of the last time they covered any new hip-hop related releases.  It's mostly in the rock/pop spectrum.

The blog portion isn't very comprehensive and I don't follow it much.  They're basically usually just regurgitating tidbits on the blog that you can find on any number of larger sites dedicated to the same subject (Stereogum, Pitchfork, Drowned in Sound, Tiny Mix Tapes, etc).

yup, it was Wu-Tang and Digible Planets for me.  I was not too psyched about snoop and dre, but the next wave with biggy, tupac, wu-tang...that shit was pretty undeniable :)

I was exposed to a wide variety of music at a young age, since my father was a guitarist in a blues rock band.

Then he became a booking agent, and eventually a manager, so I'd go on the road with him to gigs across the Eastern seaboard. I got to hang out with blues, soul, hip hop and rock musicians.

When I became an older teenager, oddly enough, he exposed me less to the road life (I guess a kid couldn't get into too much trouble).

After he got one of his acts to the Grammys, and the political nonsense that came with it, he'd left the industry for good.

I didn't mean "move on" as in stopped listening to rock...I guess diversifying is the right word. I dunno w/e lol

List of shame (a lot of these were bands that had singles that I bought, but not the whole albums):
 :-\ :-\ :-\
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Damn Yankees
Ratt
Motley Crue (I used to listen Dr. Feelgood on repeat while I took baths when I was like 10 :lol )
Korn - the first album was fucking awesome at the time, but one of those bands that becomes retroactively shameful
KMFDM
Marilyn Manson
Mr. Big - aka "I'm the one who wants to be with you, deep inside I hope you feel it too!"
Smashing Pumpkins - not shameful, but the amount I listened to them and worshipped them totally is, especially in light of how much of a douche Billy Corgan has been in years.
[close]

there are a lot of random shameful 90s singles that I got into, since singles tapes were the only ones I could afford before getting a job when I was 13.
