I hooked up my Wii again because of Zelda and decided to give Kirby Epic Yarn another shot.  Still looks nice, but this is SO DULL.  I can't do it.  four stages is enough.  I'm ready to sleep right now.  Ambien has nothing on this.

Juggling all sorts of games at the moment:

Skyrim - GOTY. Absolutely fantastic game that may even eclipse Morrowind as my favorite of the series. There's just so much to do, I'm constantly getting distracted by, well, everything. I can't get enough.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Yeah, it's shitty that Capcom threw out a new version of the game nine months after the original but I play MvC3 all the fucking time so $40 for balance changes, new characters, stages and improved online? No brainer for me. I'm still terrible, getting my ass kicked online but the new characters are pretty much all fun as hell.

Super Mario 3D Land - The reason I shelled out $250 (lol) for a 3DS and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm only a little bit in (just beat the fourth world) but the game is fun as hell and classic, if relatively easy, Mario gameplay. The mixture of 2D and 3D Mario gameplay mixes much better than I thought it would and this is the first game where I've been impressed with the 3D (the 3D gimmick rooms are cool as hell).

Assassin's Creed: Revelations - By far getting the least playtime out of any of the games I'm playing at the moment. It's definitely good but I think I'm worn out on the franchise after a game a year for the past few years. The new systems are underwhelming and in some cases just not all that much fun.

I still have to pick up Rayman Origins (the demo was fantastic so I'm sure the game will be too) and I'll probably get Zelda but my hype is probably the lowest it's ever been for a Zelda game. I'll buy it because it's Zelda but I can definitely wait a little while.

Oh, and I also want to pick up Saints Row 3, love the sense of humor it has and I'm certainly down for some crazy ass GTA gameplay.

Everyone hates on Epic Yarn  :(

It's a good game, and does a lot of newish things to be up there this gen.

I'm afraid to even play it.  Kirby games are always like "what's the point".  It's a platformer with no challenge at all.  And it's not like Zelda or something where there's other things like story/exploration to make it worth the experience even with no challenge.

Canvas Curse was awesome though.

Anyhow, I barely game much these days.  Takes me about a month to finish the few games I start each month.  Here's what I'm playing now:

Trials of the Sky FC - Just started chapter 3 of 4.  Game picked up dramatically at the end of Chapter 2.  Already liked it, just wasn't super into it.  More interested now.  Goal is to finish this and Witcher 1 so I can start up on their sequels early next year.

Mario 3DS - Finished World 1.  It seems very samey, but it's Mario and it looks nice and is fun.  I don't like the 3DS analog much, but at least it's better than no-analog or the psp nub.

Zelda SS - On the pre-dungeon area before Dungeon #3.  Still like it, though at this point I've accepted it's just like every other console Zelda since OoT: UPs and DOWNs, UPs and DOWNs.

If I'm lucky I'll knock those 3 out by the end of the month and maaaaaaybe have time to fit in Uncharted 3 (if I replace my broken PS3) before FFXIII-2 (again, only if I replace my broken PS3).  If I don't fix my PS3 December is all about BATMAN PC version & Saints Row 3 PC.

Shadow of the Colossus HD

I forgot how much the 15th colossi sucks.  20 minutes of him shaking around, pause for 1 second, can't finish strike, lose stamina, repeat.

No, that's just this version.  #3 and #15 are fucked up because they messed up the grip physics.  #3 isn't too bad unless it's on hard time attack.  #15 is the one that pisses you off on its head.

'this' version as in the HD version? because I hated it on the PS2 too.  I actually stopped playing because of the 15th Colossi.  Months later I went back and finally finished it, but it's just terrible.  It doesn't even have one of those cool moments where the music picks up and you're expected to do some crazy stunt around the giant, like jumping on the Wing of 13.

Yeah, PS3 version has slightly different physics which makes it harder to get a grip on #15's head to get a stab in.  It's really annoying and makes it take far longer than it should.

This week/weekend- Skyrim is on the backburner until I have a bigger block of time I think.

Rayman Origins: A lot of fun and really challenging. Has that super meat boy approach though so its not so bad. Also very nice to look at.

Dragon Age Origins: Finished deep roads- brood mother fight was tedious- golem fight kind of easy for some reason- all my dudes had swords too lol. All thats left is Denerim then the boring boss fight then expansion time woot.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3: Enjoying this more than I thought I would considering its so shameful in its MILKING

Halo Reach: replayin through those crazy Halo games.

*Finally* finished my first and only playthrough of El Shaddai. Pretty sure this is the worst game I've played all year (it's a tossup between this and Duke). The level design in particular is absolutely horrible; almost every stage is nothing but barren, straight corridors and an occasional platforming segment, with a few designated combat areas where you fight a few waves of repetitive enemies. The combat is shallow and simplistic, bosses have about 100x more health than they should, and there's about 15 enemies in the game (including bosses) that they recycle over and over. Needless to say, I think the game is trash.

I'd give it a 3/10 if I were feeling generous.

Playing a lot of Columns for some reason.  Am I allowed to like this more than Puyo Puyo?

Also some Gumshoe.  It saddens me that Nintendo made it through a whole generation of touch screen/waggle non-sense and there was never a port or sequel to this.  One of the very few tolerable light gun games, along with Night Stocker and Operation Gunbuster.

The alternate color Vic Viper? ::) Gamestop failed to include the code for a ton of people. I e-mailed them the day after my copy arrived and finally got a reply yesterday saying I'd get mine in 3-5 days. Not surprising that Icono is not a fan since dude can handle Cave's crazy bullet hell and I can't but I've 1cc'ed this game. :lol If nothing else it's nice to have a shmup whose gameplay space actually uses my entire TV screen.

Eh, you just need to pick one of the characters who have overpowered weapons and you'll be able to make it through the first loop at least. I credit fed through story mode with the blue girl while having most of the bosses time out on me, and then I played score attack with the pink girl and made it to 2-1 before my first death. I think the yellow girl is the strongest, but I haven't tried her yet.

I didn't actually buy the game either; gamefly sent me it when it first came out, but it never came, so I reported it as being lost in the mail. So they removed it from my profile and sent me Rayman. Then Otomedius came in the mail yesterday. shrug

Yeah, S. Lazer + S. Missile = auto-win basically. I've barely even played Score Attack, wonder how many loops it'd take for me to hit 10 mil for the 'cheev. Mainly Story Moding with everyone first.

God help me, I'm actually beginning to enjoy Lego Star Wars. There's not much about it that's challenging, this is more like a relaxing break, at least when I'm not playing it with my son, whose ability to confound the game designers' plans is legendary. This must be something like what Musou fans feel, where I tell them it's a crappy game, boring level design, and no design improvements between iterations, and they say, "Yeah, but it's relaxing..."

Also played another couple hours' worth of Batman Arkham City today. I am not a fan of the shark. I just don't like sharks. I really, really am not a fan of sharks. And I'd argue that being eaten by a shark repeatedly is not part of Batman's... oeuvre.

Got 259m in Espgaluda II just now (died on the last boss). I haven't really been playing over the last 4-5 days, so that was a nice surprise. For some reason the game isn't really hooking me like Futari or Akai Katana, or even Death Smiles 2, so I lack motivation to get better. It's a great game though, I have almost no issues with it so I'm not sure what the problem is. It's also hard as balls, so I need to stop sucking if I'm ever going to clear it.

I kinda lack motivation to play anything, really. Rayman is another game that I have almost no issues with, but I just don't feel like playing it.

Vacation gaming so far:

  • Finished main campaign of Dragon Age Origins on 360 today- forgot how obnoxious those General fights (yes, optional) at the end were though. Flew right into the expansion- so good to see ogren again- his blowjob jokes are win.
  • Im in the third world of Rayman Origins so far. Dont seem to be any bossfights- returning to some older levels to try and get a few more of the items used to unlock special stages. Great little platformer though. Wish it was selling.
  • Almost through my Heroic run of LOTR WOTN- game is way more satisfying on a second playthrough- combat feels braindead until you've significantly opened up the tree. The gear is also more interesting in Heroic- lots of modifiers, not just the base stuff.
  • UMvC3 for a bit, died online a few times- played offline a bit. My team is weird and loses often - Tron, Storm, X-23. If I wanted to win i'd have a good character in there I GUESS.
  • Finally got around to meeting the grey beards in Skyrim- raided their place for an Official Greybeards Robe tm but alas- just some shitty shoes. Also raided some tomb and took out a necromancer- upgraded my mules armor too.
  • Made it a bit deeper into Halo Reach on Heroic- hunter fights make me rage- as does getting shot by dropship turrets.

so there's a RAGE demo on Xbox and it's kind of bad, or at least not good

I partly blame the controls.  I don't mind dual analog controls, but RAGE feels bad to play.  It has a definable x and y axis when looking around and it just feels bad.  Even with a mouse and keyboard, bullet sponge enemies ain't fun.  Maybe it's just the demo.  I walked through a linear sewer path shooting homeless people and at one point other homeless people were shooting at those homeless people.  And then I pulled a switch, got on an elevator, game said I died because why not, and it spawned me back at the start of the sewers.

Rage is a fun game, can't speak to how it plays on console though. Ending's terrible [very rushed, unsatisfying] and the open world is never exploited the way it should be, but it does corridor shooting pretty well.

yeah, the levels themselves are really good, although they needed more enemy types and bosses, but everything else in the game is an unsatisfying waste of time.  and when you strip away all that bullshit you get a game that can be finished in a few hours and never seems to get going.  even as an id fanatic i cant really defend this game.

I finally got around to fixing my problem of my TV-OUT PC gaming being in stereo or faux-surround all these years.  Now I have proper 5.1 sound to go along with 1080@locked 60fps with 4xAA couch PC gaming.  So now I'm definitely PC-only for all 3rd party games for the rest of this gen.

I'm using Battlefield Bad Company 2 campaign as my testbed.  Mainly because I want to play Battlefield 3's campaign but I want to play BC2 first so I can appreciate the visual upgrade of DICE's new engine.

Finished DA Awakening on 360, forgot how easy things were in this expansion since everyone was so juiced up on new and OP talents. Still, really entertaining characters, just wish I could spend more time killin things with em.

Yup. I played Awakening on Nightmare difficulty and it was still a joke, although the demon witch fight was almost challenging, but still fun.

Awakenings was pretty great though, I prefer it over Origins in a lot of ways.

They really fucked up Anders' character in DA2, he was so good in Awakenings.

In contrast, I brought my Sennheiser cans home from work so I could play some decent sounding Saints Row 3. Game sounds pretty fantastic on them. They're using Wwise middleware, so it's not surprising the sound has had a major jump in fidelity. I'd like to try it in surround at some point.

I put everything aside to dive head-in to Rayman Origins. Fantastic little platformer - fun mechanics, beautiful HD 2D graphics, co-op is a blast and the difficulty is perfect. Too bad it's going to sell like shit, games like this deserve to sell. Probably should have been lower than $60 though, maybe $50 like Sonic Generations.
