1st time - before playing Dark Souls, didn't know wtf I was doing. got annoyed and quit

2nd time - after playing Dark Souls, but didn't really feel like playing a game like that at the time

Now I got nothing else to play and after watching some speed runs and watching Brad from GB play I wanna try again.

i stopped playing desktop dungeons because there was a bug that made the game crash upon reaching a certain dungeon, they fixed it now... but now that i have started playing the game again it feels like a chore!

the super-hard dungeons that you can do post-game all require some exagerated strategy to pull off as they often features multiple boss (one of them require you to kill 9 of them in a row) and tons of enemies that can cripple you but at the same time they don't really introduce any new gimmick so rather than thinking about how to approach a specific situation, the whole thing boils down to sticking to the more powerfull class/item combination while not doing any serious blunder

even when you finaly clear them all you get are new classes, but there is nothing to do with these classes in the first place so why the heck should i care in the first place?

on a side note, i posted this on the random talk thread but someone has made a bunch of emulator that actualy come with achievements that you can earn
http://retroachievements.org/
i tried it and i'm surprised by how well it works, they even went as far as making speed-run leaderboards for super mario bros and even more complicated achievement like "clear world 1 without collecting any coins" and all that info is gathered on their main site a-la steam

i think it's a pretty great idea if you feel like replaying some old ass game again, too bad they don't have MAME on it cause achievements are the best when featured on more arcadey game

the performance in Dragon's Dogma tho  :holeup

played a little. seems ok.

buuut, loaded up DeS. picked up where i last left, which was Tower of Latria. Bailed out of there so I could go into Shrine of Storms. Killed the Adjudicator. Picked up the Crescent Falchion (using the prostrat skip). Lvled up my magic a bunch.
Then went back into Latria and cleaned up everything up to the boss. Bailed out again and went into Stonefang. Went through the entire 1-1 and killed the Armor Spider in one.

Having so much more fun now. Tower of Latria is an amazing level with amazing atmosphere.

I beat Metal Gear Solid 1 for the first time in forever.  It has not aged well at all.

Those stiff controls :yuck
Those 10 polygon character models :yuck
That fixed camera :yuck
The backtracking :yuck
Sniper Wolf fight :yuck :yuck :yuck

On the bright side, I beat the torture section for the first time after 15 years!

Sniper Wolf fight owns and MGS1 has always had back tracking. The fixed camera is fine too.  Only real problem is shooting controls.

Ys: Memories of Celceta
Beat this on Hard. Best game I've played on the Vita so far and one of the best RPGs I've played over the last few years. Great game.

Toukiden (demo)
Pretty much a shameless Monster Hunter clone with great graphics. I liked it, but it just makes me want to get back to MH3U because I've still got a fuckton of stuff to do in that game.

Dodonpachi Daioujou
Been practicing White Label over the last week or two (with A-EX). I had to relearn a whole bunch of stuff and figure out some new things, but I feel like I've finally got solid strategies for everything. Now I just need to find the motivation to start playing full credits.

Played the Lightning Returns demo and it was better than I thought it would be. Story still makes no sense whatsoever, but I like how you can switch classes on the fly, battle system reminds me a bit of Valkyrie Profile crossed with FFXIII paradigm shifting.

So, DDS. I'm apparently under-leveled for this double boss fight in the Karma Temple. Garuda keeps crushing me with Megidola. :noah I feel like I don't have enough people to defend against everything. Well, I do, but then I can't get any attacks in...

To grind, or not to grind? The guide I looked at said basically to "hope for the best". Sigh.

Alright, so I've been on kind of a game addiction since finishing ACIV last week.  Finished a bunch of stuff!

Pokemon Y - Yeah, already made a tl;dr thread on it.  Was fun, didn't hate it.  Would play another one in the future.

The Walking Dead S1 - Man, I think at the time when I finished this I had a lot to say.  But now I've got nothing.  Was pretty good, looked great and had fantastic pacing.  Story was good but wish I had played this before The Last of Us because honestly TLoU covers most of the same themes and does them better.  Ending was still a nice ending.  Looking forward to season 2 when it's done.

Trails in the Sky Second Chapter - This game is even worse paced than the first game and again takes until the final chapter for the story to actually move.  But luckily the final chapter is like 15+ hours long and pretty great, so in the end it's a good rpg, but expect it to be very episodic like FC for most of the game.  Great characters and great battle system (good boss fights).  Music is so-so.

Gone Home - Good game but seems insanely overrated.  Have no idea how this won best of the year awards.  Can't really say ANYTHING about this without spoiling it so (I'm glad I went in knowing nothing at all about this game):
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ok, so the story is nice and covers something not usually covered in games and does it pretty well.  That's good and I approve.  It also does a nice job with the 90s feel.  But it also does it in a mechanically slow and boring way of walking around REALLY SLOWLY (can you climb the stairs any slower) rotating toothpaste and other objects for no real reason.  The only reason the game works is that it fakes you out with a red herring that makes you think it's a horror game so the creepy music and low-lighting has you on your toes.  I didn't know anything about this game so all the way until the end I was expecting something to jump in my face any second; I thought it'd pull a House of the Devil and suddenly in the last 5 mins the house would turn into MURDEROUS BLOOD LAKES EVERYWHERE MONSTERS ARGGHGHH and freak me out.  But the other part of me was wondering the whole time I was listening to Sam's stories if the horror bit was just a red herring, but I couldn't let my guard down because then when something did jump out I'd fall out of my seat and die of a heart attack.  So yeah the game works because it fakes the horror aspect.  That being said, even though it was only about 2 hours long, there were still times where I was walking around where I was pretty bored and felt completely unengaged.  If this game was set during the day with the lights on it'd be a really boring game tbh.  I think they could've paced it better, maybe let you walk a little faster and maybe made fewer rooms so it didn't feel so stretched out.  I dunno, I'm not a game designer and overall I did like it and am quite happy with it.  Would give it a solid 8/10, but surprised at the game of the year awards.
[close]

Teleglitch: Die More Edition - HOLY FUCK THIS IS A HARD GAME.  Great rogue-like though.  The crafting system is what makes it.  So much fun stocking up on items and building all kinds of weapons/armor/items while creeping around trying to survive a pack of horrible mutants set on destroying you.  The game is just too damn hard though.  When I walk into a room and a guy with a gun starts shooting I die in like 3 seconds from the spray and there goes a great 45 min in run that I was doing.  I hear the original version before Die More Edition was a lot easier.  I wish I played that one!  But I still like this and appreciate it.  It reminds me of Dead Space 1 as a rogue-like.  Limited resources, scared of every corner, then BLARGHGHHHH MONSTERS IN YOUR FACE YOUR DEAD :(

Probably gonna play Spelunky and Stanley Parable next and maybe finish up FFXIII-2.  Oh and I'm playing La Mulana, but I posted about that in the La Mulana thread.

Played about two hours of DmC and I really enjoyed it. I like the old dmc games but I'm not really that hardcore, just beat them a couple of times on different difficulties, so the gameplay didn't feel that lacking especially on PC. Looks great and the cut scenes are skippable which is great because I'm playing this while listening to podcasts anyways.

I'm surprised at how many weapons i already have too (three plus the guns), but I guess these are the essentials and everything else will be more spaced out.

So I pop in FFXIII-2 like I do every few months to play a bit and the first area I start at, of course, is Academy 400 AF, which if you've played the game you know is the area where you are forced to battle every 10 steps for 2 hours as you run through this big map that ends with an annoying boss fight on top of it.  Apparently it's the worst part of the whole game, and of course, that's where I started lol

At least got it done and out of the way.  Game still looks really nice and sounds great, and after playing the final bosses of Trails SC and La Mulana and Teleglitch I'm so ok with an easy rpg that I just tap O while web browsing on my ipad during standard battles and listen to the nice music hehe

Got him now, had problems with throwing the lava junk at him.

Yeah, there's one attack I could never reliably figure out how to dodge, but I got lucky and he didn't do it often.  I was talking to a friend who said the same thing.  The boss is fine but one of the attacks is kind of iffy.

Didn't end up grinding in DDS to beat beat it, but I was about two hours from the end anyway, so I just watched someone else (with an over-powered party) play the last few bits. Not that it illuminated anything, but I'm done with that game now. Instead of moving right on to DDS2 I started Wild Arms 5. So far, so anime. Very anime, in fact.

I did the same with DDS :heh I said "Fuck this shit" and youtubed the rest. To be fair I had just seen my father die like two weeks before playing it, so I really didn't have the mental fortitude to deal with frustration.

Wild Arms 5 is so anime. I thought it was...ok. I only played a few hours before sending it back as it just wasn't my type of thang.

I am currently playing Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition Remix. Got it off Gamefly. It's pretty good, and I can already tell there is a ton of content.

Started playing Kid Icarus Uprising.  Spent most of the first level trying to make the controls comfortable for me as a lefty.  I think maybe I've got it ok now with aiming on the left analog and movement on the right buttons.  I'll see how stage 2 goes...  Very nice music though and feels very Sin & Punishment and I love some S&P so I'm down for this.  But wish it was on the Wii with analogue + pointer instead like S&P2.  That game felt great to control.

Also started playing SRW OG Saga: Masou Kishin / Lord of Elemental II, but even though it's fun I checked the wiki and it's like 50-70 hours long and I don't have time for that 2 months before the next big 100 hour+ mainline SRW comes out with Z3-1.

Think I'm going to start playing Nier (gotta get hyped for Drakenguard 3!) finally this weekend, and Spelunky while continuing through FFXIII-2 to get ready for LR and La Mulana.

I finished "Rain" on PS3 since it was like $2 on PSN. Pretty well done game, pretty basic as well.

The story is unfortunately not as grimdark as I had hoped based on the setting.

Cool, I was thinking about playing this soon.  Wanna play some short 2-5 hour games for a while and picked this up on that PSN sale.

So...I played a lot more Kid Icarus Uprising.  This game is really good and is basically Panzer Dragoon/S&P in the flying parts and Virtua-On with the weapon and skill variety of DMC on foot.  All the different loot and weapon types and difficulty levels and hidden areas make the game fun and replayable and the combat is great.  If only the controls weren't kind of shitty for left-hands it'd be the Bayonetta of 3DS, hell if it just was ported to the Wii or Wii U with pointer controls it'd be the Bayonetta of those systems.  As is, I really dig it but it's sort of like the bit I played of Wonderful 101 where the gameplay is fantastic but the controls always feel like they're fighting against you, kind of like the camera controls in Ninja Gaiden 1 on Xbox.

I tried using the circle pad and replicating the right hand experience with the left hand on the touchpad for aiming and right hand on the circle anlog for walking, but coming from 15 years of post-Saturn analog stick games where I'm used to moving with the left hand and aiming with the right...it just doesn't click for me and feels awkward.  So in the end I'm doing it like this:  Air Parts:  Just playing it like a right handed person with left hand on thumbstick and right on touchpad to aim and shoot.  Works ok even if I'm not that accurate.  Ground Parts:  Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker style, left hand analog movement, right hand using the 4 buttons as an aiming camera.  Again loses some speed and accuracy but still sorta works and lets me enjoy it.

But man, if they just let you use the circle pad (which they freaking support) so that left analog = move, right analog = shoot, the game would be like EVERY OTHER GAME and would play great.  Sakurai's remarks that it would unbalance the multiplayer because touchpad users would destroy analog players...well then those analog players could learn to use the touchpad!  It's just another "we're Japan so we are behind in every single advancement of technology in game design now" :\

Anyhow, game is still hot stuff.  I like Sakurai as a game designer a lot (Kirby Canvas Curse & Smash are really well designed enjoyable games) and the game seems fantastically polished and full of content, so I'll deal with the controls and enjoy this one.  But man, as a left hand player I will be so glad when the days of touchpad gaming are gone so I don't have to deal with this shit.

Jesus, I looked at howlongtobeat.com for Icarus as I figured it'd be a 4-6 hour Sin & Punishment style shmup that I could get through in a day or two before jumping into the longer Zelda Lttp2, and wtf the main game is 11-23 hours, and 50 hours to do 100%.  WTF.  I mean, it's good that the game is so meaty and long with so many stages and so many weapons and abilities, but it's just odd for the genre.

Well, yeah, so far about 20% in they're worse, but that's mainly frustration I'm hitting with the control scheme.  The overall concept where you're doing step dash shoots straight out of Virtual On, picking for a ton of different weapons that have LOOT stats straight out of Musou games and even weapon fusion right out of those or rpgs, with lots of enemies all with unique patterns and Bayonetta/DMC style just-dodging and countering during openings; all that stuff creates a pretty deep and varied fast combat action game.  Add in the really great difficulty slider where you can choose from like 9 difficulties every stage and the harder you make it, the better the loot and money you get, and you got a cool game.  So far it's just being held down by the usual 3DS tech requiring small, empty environments and the controls fighting you, especially if you're left handed.  It's interesting and fun though.

The rail parts otoh so far are just a good simple rail shooter.  You can't even lock-on to a bunch of enemies and let go like Panzer or Rez or Sin & Punishment unless I'm missing something (maybe it's a skill or different weapon class I haven't tried yet?).  They're fun stuff and graphically look nice and are paced well.  Great music too.  But I find the ground stuff more exciting and fun even if I'm getting annoyed a lot at the same time haha.

Then again I'm not sure how I will feel 9 hours later after 25 levels of this.  Will see how it goes, but enjoying it for sure right now.

It's funny that Sakurai, a guy with what sounds like crippling RSI would design such a control scheme. They made a stand. Satire turned into reality there.

yeah, kid icarus on wii would've been great.  better aiming and a dedicated dash button would've made it much, much better.  some of the later stages have mild platforming and the nub is so twitchy that pit dashes off the edge when you just want to walk.

as far as I can see I only have a few things left to do in Demon's Souls

--Finish Valley of Defilement (finished Leechmonger)
--Finish Bolotarian Palace (on the last level)

I'm not gonna bother with Old Monk.

Still playing Dead Or Alive 5 Ultimate.  They just patched the game to v1.04 this week, updating it to match the arcade version.  New character Marie Rose will be added soon.  I love that they are still supporting this game with content...take note, Namco.

But boo to Tecmo Koei for charging $3 a pop for fucking 30 second real-time gravure "movies" for the females.
:what

The latest DLC is also even more perverted than usual!

So I decided for some dumb reason to go through my steam backlog alphabetically, and knock out the 400+ indie games from various bundles and stuff.  This was a bad idea.  The first two games I played were:

1000 Amps - At first this is kind of creative and interesting platformer/puzzler.  But then because the map is awful and the map is HUGE, eventually you get totally lost and traversal is a time consuming pain in the ass and you spend hours wandering around to find the one room you need.  I think there's a neat concept in there, but game is not really fun.  Thumbs down.

A.R.E.S. - Megaman X ripoff.  Only played the first few levels but seemed decent but nothing special.  Like a C-grade megaman clone.  Pass.

If you're the kind of person who throws any old game from a bundle on to their account, that sounds like a damn fine way to kill any interest in gaming for a good while. Still, you could have done far worse than the games you mention.

Eldritch is kiiiiiiiiiiiinda disappointing. Saw a lot people calling it "first person Spelunky," but it doesn't have nearly the nuance, learning curve or difficulty of it. It's alright. Glad I got it in a bundle and didn't pay full price.

Yeah, I learned real quickly that it was a bad idea.  Not because I'll necessarily play a lot of bad games that will make me hate gaming, but because I'll waste hours playing a lot of mediocre/nothing-special titles that I could be spending on actually really good games of which there are plenty in my backlog.  Part of me though is at least curious to spend 30-60 mins at least trying all these games I've gotten over the years through bundles (yeah I add everything to Steam/Desura) or bought for $1-2 during sales to find some hidden gems in the rough.

I mean, at first 1000 amps was kind of like that and made me want to spend 4-5 hours completing it in one night.  It was a really neat puzzle game with a nice art style and sound design.  But after finding all of the power ups besides the final one and finishing 70% of the map in 2 hours, spending another 2-3 hours lost trying to find the final rooms to finish it, especially at 4am in the morning, was...not.fun.  It's a good game with a not that good map that is terribly telegraphed to the player.  A.R.E.S. on the other hand, after an hour with the game was enough to tell me all I needed to know about it and I was good to move on.  Also tried A New Beginning from Daedalic and the animation/art was really nice, but wasn't really interested in playing it atm.

Is it a fun Rogue-like though?  After 868-Hack and Teleglitch I'm really feeling Rogue-likes right now which is why I grabbed that bundle.

It's ok. I didn't notice a lot of diversity in the levels the game generated, and the enemies mostly just shoot fireballs if they get alerted. It's also incredibly short. Apparently new game + is where it gets a bit more interesting, so I'll let you know when I get there.

Played 3 hours of RERevelations on WiiU and I'm kind of getting used to the hilariously massive stick dead zone.  But not really.

WTF Capcom.

Yesterday I also watched all the Doublefine Amenesia Fortnight vids and voted while also playing all their prototypes from the previous year that I never got around to trying.  I mainly voted based on realistic expectations of Doublefine being a so-so gameplay developer with low budgets so which of these ideas could actually prove to be enjoyable experiences.  Went with the Dear Leader sim game, Steed, the horse simulator by the guy who did the horse riding in Uncharted 3 (which was great there), and something else that I forgot.

Playing the prototypes of their old stuff...yeah, not so good.  Autonomous was a neat concept, though it was just one area to mess around with and I dunno how long the concept would hold for a full game as I was pretty bored by 10 mins in, Black Lake was the best "game" imo and was actually a decent little polished title that wasn't particularly fun, but it was a working game.  White Birch was holy shit bad Psychonauts platforming and makes me NEVER want a Doublefine platforming-only game.  Hack n' Slash was kind of polished and a neat gimmick but also got boring after about 15 mins.  Brazen was actually pretty solid as a budget Monster Hunter clone.  The kind of game you'd buy for like $1 on a cd at walmart.  Costume Quest prototype makes me see why they made it into a full game as the Prototype is pretty cool and shows the potential for a neat rpg game (which unfortunately the full game didn't capitalize on), Happy Monsters was a cool tech demo, and Space Station DF-9 seemed interesting and I'm actually curious about the early alpha version now, looks like Sim Space Station?  I don't know if Doublefine has the talent to actually make anything near a Sid Meier quality simulation game, but if they do, that concept is engaging.

So basically, the feeling I got from all their stuff is that Doublefine, like always, is great at coming out with creative original ideas for games.  Unfortunately, like always, they don't know how to make them FUN games to play.  It's kind of been the problem the studio has struggled with for years and I really wish they'd hire some pure gameplay/fun game designer leads who could work with the creative staff at turning the concepts into something that would actually make for a good game.  Because really, out of all the prototypes from last year, the only one that seemed like it could be fun is this Space Station Sim that they're pushing forward with, and that's only if they do it really well in the gameplay department which, since it's doublefine, I will be pretty skeptical about until it's done and out and has positive word of mouth.

Esch just doesn't like being the Batman. He'd rather be a cigarillo recruiting whores in France than be an ass-kicking detective with a cape.

Finally got around to Arkham City GOTY. It's fun and playable and all, but it just feels so workmanlike and by the numbers. It feels a lot like a reskinned Assassin's Creed in almost every way.
Except the combat is'nt total crap.
