Done though episode 4.  Purple man is excellent.  Miniseries are way better at building up comic book villains just because they get more time to actually make the character.

Marathoned through Master of None on netflix.

What started as a quirky, fast paced comedy turned into an honest portrayal of relationships. A lot of people compare it to Louie, I prefer Master of None. It doesn't feel nearly as abstract or forced. While character personalities are often consistent and bombastic, the world in Master of None is still our own.

Aziz Ansari really proved himself with this show. Eric Wareheim has directed stuff in the past, and he does a great job here.

Yeah, I liked the first ep of that.  Aziz is a great comedian.  In his live stuff he's very down to earth and likeable and of course he was amazing in Parks & Rec.

Watched the first ep of Jessica Jones.  Normally don't wanna go the whole "book is better than the movie" routine, but this really sucks that what is imo the funniest comic book run in the Marvel Universe (the closest movie/tv show to Alias is the first Clerks movie) is being tossed out the window to do a generic DARK EDGY FUCKED UP THRILLER.  I get the latter stuff all the time in movies and TV, otoh good humor, good superhero universe humor is incredibly rare and it looks like they're gonna miss their chance with the show.

Eh, I feel like both sides are fairly well covered. DD and JJ on one side, Flash and SHIELD on the other.

"Too dark" or "too campy/light" are never really legit criticisms IMO. Is it well written? If yes, then the tone doesn't matter.

Regardless of quality and consistency, you may not appreciate the tone. It's maybe no flaw in the artistic work themselves, but most "criticism" as done here is not aimed at the artists, but to other members of the audience...

Torture Porn Smurfs movie series might be theorically possible to pull off well, and you could always argue that the extreme counterpoint and subversion has value in itself. Do we really need it tho ?

I need to watch more eps of course, but from the first couple I don't think it's particularly well written and I don't think Ritter pulls off the part 100%.  The comic is A++ top-tier Bendis era writing, so it's basically non-stop Quentin Tarantino quality dialogue exchanges.  The TV writing feels extremely sparse and dumbed down in comparison imo.  Is it well written for a TV show about superheros?  Maybe?  But I'd be surprised if anyone who watched the TV show said the dialogue reminded them of Tarantino or Mamet or something.

I'm sure it's a good show and people will really like it.  I'm just being cranky because it doesn't seem like a particularly faithful/good adaptation and that bugs me because I'm a really big fan of the source material.  I mean I have the same issues with Game of Thrones but I'd say GoT is closer to the source material than what I've seen of JJ.

I'm surprised and dissapointed that there has been no news of Hannibal being picked up by a streaming service.  Seems like a no-brainer. :(

Pretty sure the producers said it wasn't going to happen a few months ago.

Jessica Jones is great but it severely loses steam by the last 3-4 episodes. I consider Daredevil to be better, but it's somewhat close.

It uses strategically placed sheets so you're not going to see his dick (sorry) but you will see enough that you can analyze and critique his performance.

For some reason I waited until now to watch The Newsroom and I'm happy to add this to the stable of HBO shows I absolutely adore. Sure, the forced romance subplots get pretty cringeworthy from time to time, but mostly I just get treated to a behind-the-scenes-of-producing-a-television-show drama, which is apparently like catnip for me. Almost done with season 2.

Yeah it loses a lot of it's steam around episode 8 or 9. Biggest thing that hurt imo, is it needed more subplots. Weird to say but the problem was Kilgrave was too much of an IMMEDIATE threat way too early in show and it's not fun to have your bad guy basically slip through your fingers a COUPLE times in a 13 episode series. It feels cheap.

It's interesting because at time it feels like there's too many subplots.

Bland cop dude and lesbo Trinity can both dive under a tractor. Utter wastes of time, and the cop was a horrible actor on top of being an unbelievable and annoying character.

Daredevil wasn't perfect but no character was outright annoying like that. People point to Karen but she was fine overall and redeemed herself in the second half.

saw Hannibal season 3 on netflix recently. thought it was well done, although I was disappointed with the tiger scene mainly because I remember the one in the red dragon film being very good. And the red dragon could probably been developed a little more and/or better. I really appreciated how wild gay the ending was tho.

Fargo continues to be very engaging but to rebound on the discussion we briefly had about the previous season, I have to say that the writing in S2 do rely a lot on stretching disbelief quite a bit.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The butcher guy apparently getting to his home on foot before the police in a car... and I forgot the details but apparently Peggy was still in the cave of her house all along. That means the Danson character woke up and just bolted out without inspecting the house ? I'm a bit fuzzy with the details here but that whole ping pong between their home and the police station feels contrived.
[close]

I wasn't bothered as much by that in S1, and I think that it did a better job of having that borderline supernatural tone to make it work anyway. I guess the whole UFO motif will serve as that here but it's been pretty minor so far.

Also that fake old movie was terrible. I know the intro played with that, but it was just on set. I'm baffled that a series with such obvious care to aesthetics would shit the bed that bad. It looked nothing like the real thing.

EDIT : Actors are killing it tho. Dunst is phenomenal in this and I'm not a big fan generally.

I wonder what people with a casual familiarity with Batman, maybe from the films only, make of Gotham. There's so much completely random fan service that gets glossed over in it that just has to come off as something batshit crazy and making no sense.

Wait, I've consumed almost every form of Batman mythos and it's still batshit crazy and makes no sense. I just catch more of the backstories and references that go unexplained every week. It will turn around, it has to! Plus, they promised the Court of Owls, I can't bail out before then!

Also, I feel horrible that I didn't know Krysten Ritter was Jessica Jones. She was ungodly in Don't Trust the Bitch and I owe it to her to watch.

I already watched that. I have a high tolerance for garbage. (Though I thought Birds of Prey wasn't actually that bad considering. Live-action Comic Book TV had a really bad run until Arrow...)

There's some amusing stuff, it's just so bad version of Jim Gordon heavy that it feels oppressive in a way that I hate him more than everyone else. Also, the Bruce Wayne actor has really found himself this year, he's hilarious.
