Watched the first episode yesterday, I approve.  Production values are insane for a tv show.

I dont remember anything from the book expect that I liked it and that it was pretty bad ass. So far the show delivers.

I caught up on about mid way through season 3 through season 4 of Agents of SHIELD.

Boy, they really, really, really got every possible drip out of the VR/LMD shit in the back end of season 4.  >:( That shit just kept going and going and going. The whole show by the end of season 4 seems absurd that The Avengers don't know or don't care about wtf SHIELD is dealing with, as they're doing basically if not Avengers 1 tier threats, at least solo movie threats every few weeks. Shit like HIVE and Aida, blackouts and looting all around the world, groups hunting down powered individuals and killing them should at least get some attention from Black Widow or Hawkeye from time to time.

Not to mention that SHIELD is a public agency again, and there are constant explosions and deaths going on around the country/world involving them,  so The Avengers would have to be going out of their way to not pay attention. Similar to some pretty big fucking things going on in the Netflix shows, which I don't think AoS ever reference at all either. I know the movie side is never going to reference TV, but you'd think TV could reference Netflix.

Lol at how many ways the writers find ways to get Ward back into the fold. Also lol at how the VR has Trips and Mac together and highlights more than ever how the actor playing Mac has negative charisma.

Finished Altered Carbon

Really liked it overall. They got many things right. Apparently Poe was a change from the book, but he was a great part of the story.

My two criticisms would be that the plot gets really convoluted over the stretch of the series and that the final two episodes drag a bit. The noir tropes did not bother me at all because I felt the acting was good. Also, the requirement of the acting for the sci-fi was unique and pulled off well. The one actor who had to play three personas made each character feel like they were speaking from his body. And the male actor for Ava made me believe he really was a mom.

Production values were very impressive. The world felt real and thought out. Loved the Golden Gate bridge turning into a flea market skid row.

Also, the show could be retitled: Everything but Joel's Dong

Watched the first episode of Altered Carbon and it's pretty, but they made some weird changes from the book. Nothing that ruins the show for me, but I'd love to see an interview with the show runners to see why they did this.

If you want to know what they are, I'll put them in spoilers below. They don't ruin the plot.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kovacs isn't a rebel freedom fighter in the book. He was a UN Envoy super soldier who burns out and ends up becoming a mercenary. He doesn't have a sister and Quell is just a legendary warrior philosopher that dies long before him. He never knew her personally.

Also, the hotel was called The Hendrix, and later on in the book the AI looks like Jimi. I'm guessing they ran into issues with his family who are pretty lawsuit happy.

Just started Altered Carbon. It's pretty alright so far but the language switching is starting to grate on me and I'm only halfway through the first episode.

I like the language switching. As an American, I'm unfortunately accustomed to hispanic families sitting at home and discussing their business en Inglés, with massive Spanish accents. It felt more authentic having two detectives use the language they're most comfortable in, but still understanding each other.

Also, I am love-love-loving this show. There are a few shabby bits; the impoverished black marine isn't selling the role for me, and I was unsure about Mrs. Bancroft until she also portrayed a different character and sold that for me. Martha Higareda, the spitfire playing Detective Ortega, is pretty amazing, and I thought Joel Kinnaman was the best part of both Robocop and Suicide Squad. The sets are well integrated into the greenscreen stuff. The world feels well-established, just four episodes in. It's very respectful of the books.

The Counterpart is pretty great so far, went in expecting nothing and came out having a must watch show. Channel Zero episode 1 was kind I dunno .. dull? I'm not sure if i'm behind this season's ghost story. Waco is pretty great so far, I love the acting in here, some actors are sinking so deep into their roles they are unrecognizable

finished alt-carbon and also rewatched 2049. carbon didn't finish so strong for me. I'll check out another season if they make it, but I don't really care if a second season gets made or not. 2049 was better second time around, but still lacking somehow. I feel like I'd much rather watch the original again than this new blade runner and I'll probably always feel that way.

small update on Lucifer while it takes its short break for those who from time to time ask about it unsure and then are afflicted with my long rambling reviews which confirm their worst fears (that they've read one of my posts)

the show ended it's odd hopping about with hold over episodes from last season, and Maze's actress returned from pregnancy so she's back on the show for adventures finally, both of which stabilized the arcs/teamups and they've brought in what i assume is this seasons arc character finally, Cain

and Lucy's agreed to help him find a way to finally die to spite dad

so again, it's not the comic and it'll never be, but now having that extra character in Cain who can talk about all the supernatural stuff means they spend a lot more time on it than when he has to hang out with humans/cops only, and events leading to (even if it was wonky and oddly planned) and involving Cain have gotten Lucy back to thinking about free will and opposing his dad's predestination presumptions which they sorta distractedly lost for a bit (the show seemingly apologetically had Lucifer outright come out and say he was getting caught up in useless drama and police adventures, rather than pursuing his real reason for being on Earth, to spite Dad)

also they did an episode where Lucy and Cain had to go undercover as a new gay couple that moved into a neighborhood, because of course they did (and it sorta worked rather than as dumb cringe as their ongoing spat over a supernatural related issue and public discussion of it was taken as Lucy just being overly dramatic in his metaphors regarding their relationship issues)

Re-watched The Silence of the Lambs over the weekend and got in the mood for more, so I bought the complete series box for Hannibal for a twenty or so.

Was hesitant to watch it because of the food porn and art faggery I saw from trailers and promo stills but the two episodes I watched last night were really good! Mikkelsen really does knock it out of the park with his portrayal of Lecter (though I have some trouble understanding him acousticly sometimes). Dancy plays well too and I like the chemistry between Lecter and Graham.

The show's cinematography is also beautiful as fuck without devolving into pretentious art faggery like I suspected it would. Also, quite a contrast to the 1991 movie when you compare them visually. The murder cases in these episodes were some disturbing but fun shit, though I hope, as the wimpy sissy that I am, that they keep the body horror to an agreeable level  :doge

Good stuff so far :like

Not really liking the latest season of American Crime Story. The ordering of events makes no sense and kills any kind of suspense or mystery. Don't really know why they put Gianni Versace in the title since the show is entirely about Andrew Cunanan.

They are under contract for two more seasons. The Mick does not interfere with Sunny because they are both Fox shows and production is scheduled so that they don’t conflict. AP Bio is an NBC show, though, so Dennis’s level of involvement is unknown. He will definitely be writing/producing, but they’ve been wispy washy about whether (and how much) he’ll appear on the show.

Finished Altered Carbon, good show, would watch a second season if it doesn't focus on finding Quell whatever.

I liked it but for a show with so much violence there is a weird lack of tension. Maybe cause everyone can re-sleeve.

Overall just great to see a show with such a "solid" feel to it. They really didn't cheap out.

The Dennis/AP Bio thing is overblown imo and them taking advantage of it, there's no reason to think he couldn't do both, especially considering Always Sunny only does ten episodes and he's still going to be writing and possibly even directing episodes. I think it may have come from potential scheduling conflicts plus last seasons ending and they thought "we should try this" because they always like to shake up the show. Always Sunny was taking an extra length break anyway. Sorta like South Park did a couple years ago and everyone freaked out about how it must mean its ending. When they just wanted to work on other stuff and recharge. I think Always Sunny did this before too. (Checked: Season 9 had an extended gap after it ended with the Thanksgiving fire. And to move the show from the Fall.)

The real question is how they play it and for how long, like Dennis is supposed to be their most competent member, but with him gone do they make everyone's lives better and bring him back to return them to the status quo by "fixing" the success. Maybe they all don't realize that their lives are improved with him gone. Or do they just sink further into the depths of madness because the sociopath that is Dennis was literally the only thing keeping them tied to society.

Since Sweet Dee and Dennis are on their own shows now, does that mean Always Sunny is done?

I think you’re mostly right about them milking the suspense, but if AP Bio ended up being a success and NBC ordered more episodes (as Fox did for S1 of The Mick), it could completely fuck the schedule and limit Dennis’ availability to appear on Sunny.

From various things I’ve read, I kinda feel like Dennis really does want to move on to some real extent, too. He might just want a reduced role.
