Why does everything look so flat and lifeless?

Whatever they did in post-processing, it looks fucking awful. The effects are straight up distracting.

"So we've continually asked ourselves, how can we let the island guide you in the most thematic and immersive ways possible?"

Dunno why, but this cracked me up.

The map looks great. That movie filter :leon
But it's open world, so expect repetition after two hours.

As a big open world/Assassin's Creed guy, i was kind of let down by the Tsushima demo.

Graphics (and animations in particular) look alright to subpar, the cape flapping in the wind and some combat anbimations were the only impressive aspects.
The map looks small and as usual, packed with shit to the point where it loses any naturalistic feel (something AC Origins got right).
The "no waypoint" gimmick is cute, but in my opinion will end up being less immersive, not more, when every wildlife and decorative element is turned into a purely mechanical gameplay tool.
Combat looked like old AC games, so something most hated to hell, even though it at least looks fancy, so i'm not too down on it.
Stealth looks basic.

I really liked the black & white filter though, sure you could've just adjusted your TV settings, but i wouldn't have bothered otherwise, now i'll probably play the game like that from the start (as i don't like their art direction in color).

Overall, much like Horizon it seems like an open world made by and for people who don't get what is so good about open worlds (this was true for Infamous as well).
And the sandbox aspect, which you could get from games like MGSV or FarCry, doesn't seem explored at all.

Overall i think that, beyond the setting, it'll end up being a very mediocre game, with production values that, from yesterday's video, aren't even all that impressive.

Why does everything look so flat and lifeless?

Whatever they did in post-processing, it looks fucking awful. The effects are straight up distracting.
Every highlight being bright white doesn't help, i'm not sure what they were coing for, but in B&W that's at least mitigated a bit.

As someone who doesn't like open world games for the sandbox aspect, I loved Horizon. I like open world games for the scale and immersion factor I guess. I like it when they feel like a "place". Something like Mafia 2 dosen't bother me. I'm going to play it linearly and the open world is more so for atmosphere and a sense of being. I loved Horizon for how the world felt like a place even if the environment wasn't big. The scale was awesome, as you leave the opening village and journey to this big gate fortress that leads to this multi-teird city.

I hate open world Ubisoft style games that just seem to give you this big land mass of pointless objectives. I actually liked how Horizon had few side objectives and yet they felt unique and worthwhile. Yes there were only like 6 "towers" to climb, but all where in an interesting area with diffrent approaches. Yes there were only like 6 side dunegons, but each had it's own theme. As far as open world games go, Horizon is one of the few I could stand. I hate Assassin's Creed and Far Cry where they just seem to be a checklist of whatever without any real authored feeling content.

As for Ghost, I don't actually care. I found the last Infamous game to be pretty lame. There's also nothing that I've seen about this game that really feels like it has anything going for it beyond visuals.

That was actually the worst aspect of Horizon in my opinion.
The world was cramped and didn't look very natural, gameplay elements like tall grass were awkwardly inserted into the landscape, and stood out like a sore thumb, the cities were devoid of life, with people mostly standing around doing nothing, it was really poor on that front.
The combat was very fun and the robo dinos were cool (and of course the graphics and production values were impressive) but as a "world" i thought it was a solid step below something like Assassin's Creed Origins or GTAV/RDR2.. or even Witcher 3.

I kid....kind of. I’m sure RE7 was a fine game, but the first person isn’t something I want. As long as they keep making the over the shoulder ones I’ll play them.

I feel you, but Sarah Schachner's work on both Unity and Origins was really fantastic:

And the third guy they have, has worked on the Vikings (the tv show) soundtrack (which in itself was pretty good) so he's mostly there to bring that angle, i think.

As much as i dislike the setting, i'm quite excited for the sountrack, as Jesper and Sarah were the best composers the series had so far, and it's nice they're both back, hopefully they can work well together, and it's not one of those "too many cooks" situations.

Never played those two, so I'm unfamiliar with her work.  Gonna check her out for sure.

I thought Trevor Morris does the score for Vikings. (Did I miss reading that he's doing some parts too?) He did the score for DA: Inquisition also, which I actually like a lot... But I agree on the "too many cooks" analogy... Although still acceptable and good, for games like MGSV, Deus Ex: MD and SOR4, it's hard to not be sceptical when more composers come in to the picture from prior installments.

Oh, and my 2 cents on the Vikings "inspired" modern Nordic tracks (like the Vikings intro)... Don't want that crap in my game.. it's completely immersion breaking, imo.  Same thing they murder Peaky Blinders with which drives me up the wall.

I have all sorts of problems with Unity, it had some interesting ideas, but ultimately came out sort of shit, however the music was really great in it.
Origins is the best AC for me, so nothing to add there.

Also should've said he worked "on" the Vikings soundtrack.
I'm not very familiar with him, but i'm assuming he's a contractor type dude that did specific tracks for the show, and not the score itself, so i assume it'll be the same here.

Like when Rockstar hired a bunch of folk/country/rock musicians for Red Dead, but then the score itself was handled by Woody Jackson.

My old laptop is way past retirement age. Going to be looking to replace it later this year.

Any good sites that compare laptop benchmarks or at least give out sensible summaries about a laptop's pros and cons or do some comparisons that can be comprehended by a simpleton? Sometimes I see too much vagueness in write ups and other times I see too much info that gets way too detailed. Looking for something that isn't overbearing, but still offers enough details to know what I'm getting into.
-------

tl;dr Recommend me good websites for laptop comparisons that are readable to the average person

Yeah I saw that when this guy (I think he's good, but you experts can tell me I'm totally wrong) mentioned that this laptop was surprisingly worth it for the price point as a thin laptop. Not that it's intended for gaming in any way (I mean he was playing average looking games at the lowest settings for good fps), but still he seemed to be really hooting about the new AMD chips.

I mean if only it was in to begin with, I would maybe have the same attitude as you. But paying for a product, then for them to patch in kernel-level drivers is... Not cool. Sure you can just crack it then, but why should they need to, and why should they give up playing the game online for that?

This isnt really about the DRM, more about the 0 level kernel access they impose on you. I dunno maybe watch the vid, it's not really a 'stink'.
