Astrobot 1 is the new king. Also, no they literally don't deliver anymore outside of a single Mario game once a generation. Turning everything into the same type of 2D shit ever since New Mario Bros. took off. Even things like Chibi Robo.
Activision saving the genre before Nintendo did :neogaf

Super Mario Odyssey is a fun experience, but they removed any semblance of challenge and difficulty. It’s a great skinner box since finding moons feels great, but I don’t have any desire of playing it again whereas I replay the 2D Marios like once a year.

Yea we know, but I don't trust EA to make a good NFS game really at all anymore.

The last good ones were Criterion made, Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted. After that, utter trash.

Guess they saw how Activision hit that nostalgia fountain and want some too. Too bad that NFS Underground isn't exactly the quality of THPS2 or Crash Racing. To compete with that you'd need a remake of that level for Burnout 3. Or I guess SSX:T. But I suspect that Lil Jon meme was a far bigger success back in the day, so that's what we'll get.

Nah, a trash game will always be a trash game and a good game will always be a good game.
It looked pretty cool with it's corny street racing aesthetic, but the driving was always bad. I can still sink some hours into PGR or Burnout Revenge and have a good time or the PS2 era Gran Turismos. They might not look great for today's standards but they are still fun.

Sure. Some games lose a lot though with years, when genres have evolved so much, that while the wow factor might have lasted for the play through and even a replay back in the day, it isnt that amazing anymore. Original RE or RE2 is not scary to me anymore or very fun to play, back then it was fucking intense as fuck though. Half Life 2 while still being good, is nowhere close to as amazing as it was back then, when no FPS (that I played at least) had done a physics gun that well, super mario 64 is mediocre as fuck playing it today, not the least due to the absolutely shit camera, but back in the day it was pretty fucking great. Stuff like the first gran turismos are also not very fun to play anymore, when you've played later GT games and Forza that are so much better.

I‘d argue that these games were never great to begin with from a mechanics point of view. MGS looks like shit, but it’s still fun. The same goes for Doom or Quake whereas Goldeneye was always bad and when you take the things away it had going for it, you are left with a bad game, just like Mario 64 was always inferior to the 2 D Marios, however it is still a decent game.

Average games aged poorly. Great ones less so. Like, I wouldn't recommend RE2 to a casual, but to enthusiasts no doubt. Caught up with all Mikami games before Evil Within came out and Dino Crisis was a hundred times more tense than that mess.  :doge  Best gen 7 machine was 32 bit aka DS. Randomly picked up PS1 Crash Racing a few years back and was shocked it shits all over modern Mario Kart, which I played hundred of hours. Indies keep copying 16 bit games, but still can't match the old level design made by pros in their prime.
 etc. etc.

It's a problem of iterations, and problems just multiplying in 3d.
Mario 64 is arguably the first 3d platformer.
2D Marios (especially if thinking of late ones, like World or Yoshi's World) come after a lot of iteration on the genre, on top of 2d games being straight up simpler to design, if anything because the camera (biggest problem in 3d platformers) isn't a problem.

That said, i'd take a 3d Mario of any 2d one any day of the week.

I played a ton of it with Demo1, included in the PS1.
But that actually did deal with the camera: Poorly, exposing the problem with first person platforming, for example. :lol

I'm gonna go ahead and say that Crash was never good.
I finished and enjoyed Warped back in the day, so it did something right, but the controls, especially after you tried Mario 64, just felt absolutely vile.
Level design was quite dull too.
The character also is just so fundamentally awful, that i don't even get how it's coming back, but 3d platformers aren't really all that common (unless they're pretend-platformers, like Tearaway) so if it can manage to evolve on that front, i won't spit on it.

I liked the Crash games because they stayed within their means and therefore are still fun to play today IMO.
Compare that against the awful slew of 3D platformers and collectathons of the era and I take Crash over the Banjos, Spyros, Crocs and DK64 of that era.

Croc 1 was actually meant to be a Yoshi game.

But Nintendo dropped it and used the idea of a 3D platformer to create Mario 64 instead

Thanks again Bepbo for letting me grab Elite Dangerous for Steam. I had some issues logging in to their weird login thing, because I already had a PS4 account. Sadly I could not use the ships I had on the PS4 version but had to begin again.

Been awhile since I played it since I sold my PS4 awhile back, but the controls came back to me pretty fast. Man I love this game, just flying around the galaxy trading and doing missions.

I'm no fan of collectathons (rule of thumb, there are good exceptions, like JSRF) but Crash was so stiff and awkward to play.

I played the original Crash at the LI Retro Expo a few years ago after not really having played the series since the halcyon days of the PS1 (I've played the first 3 games to varying degrees but never owned  or completed any). Was surprised how much fun I was having, even though there's issues with poor hit detection here and there. I quickly purchased the first 3 games (this was before the N Sane Trilogy was announced) and am gonna play through at least one of them later this year when I get to the PS1 on my 'chronological backlog'.

Never got into the Spyro series though, but their gfx were certainly impressive for the time.

Everyone kept saying how bad Crash 1 was for decades but then the remake was great. :idont It's like a hardcore NES platformer with some rough edges, or alternatively like the (equally not greatly balanced) first Donkey Kong Country translated literally into 3D. The remake in particular was great, because you had this NES-esque platforming with crazy modern visuals for a change. 3 I played back in the day and is actually the worst, because half the game is gimmicks.

Racing is legit one of the greats though, regardless of what you can say about the platformers.

Spyro is Banjo-Kazooie with all the best parts taken out. Got nostalgia for the first, but it's completely average.

I'll be honest, I'd probably take an "average" game from back in the day over an "average" game today - just because they're usually a lot more streamlined and don't really have all the superfluous junk, endless tutorials, that pads out modern day games. And back in the day when game design was a bit less standardized, you'd have a bit more variety and creativity in terms of mechanics that simply just missed the mark in execution.

You're telling me you're playing that bridge level and thinking "yeah, yeah this is good"? To me, the remake highlighted just how shit that game was.
When they forced me to replay it in Uncharted 4 i thought they had fucked it up somehow, but no, that was actually how bad it controlled.

This is offset by indie games.
You can really find streamlined and very creative games in there, if you're willing to wade through all the pixel art clones, and don't care about AAA production values.
