But I'm only half joking. I only ever had ingrown toenails once and if I had had the option I'd have gladly taken off the fucking toe just to get it over with. Sadly, I was still a kid, and my mom trusted the expertise of our doc more than my reasoned and efficient approach.

Yeah I was talking to some of my coworkers there and it seems like there is a lot of pressure on women to dress elegantly all the time and always do their makeup. My wife and I were talking about it and many of them don't stand out on their physical features, but it's the damn presentation that elevates them. Back in the USA briefly. Spending a week with at my sister's home, with my Mom visiting. Really frustrated that she's drinking again. She knows she is at a big health risk, including a situation where they told her that in recovering she had beaten 25% odds — but that she'd have worse odds if she ever chose to drink again. And she has.

I'm sad and angry and frustrated and feeling helpless.

Sorry, Chrono. I went through that many times with my dad. He'd give up drinking and/or smoking for a while only to fall back into it knowing his health was fragile. I think at the time and even now I'd like to think it made him happy in some way, but it's a difficult thing to gauge because he was a mess the last 5 years or so by any measure. I'm not aware of all the circumstances with your mom obviously, but in the end I decided to give him a break because he was dealing with all sorts of things I couldn't even begin to understand. It didn't stop me from asking him to try to improve his health though.

Went to the dentist for the first time in many years. Much less catastrophic than I feared (I've been negligent with my health really). Need to brush better and take care of my gums. Dental calculus cleaning is a breeze now, science be praised.

Haven't had one of those in a while. My condolences.

I wish Windows wouldn't half-arse archive support. Educate the user that it's a file type that requires a (sigh) "app", or handle it completely transparently like a directory using alternate data streams or NTFS junctions.

Oh well. Glad you managed to edumacate the client goodly. Now, will it stick after the first time, or will this require several doses. Bonus points if the client doesn't recognise you and starts blaming the "previous support guy". Rude, didn't explain anything, used too many complicated words, but you, you finally explained it in a way that was understandable. Thanks a bunch etc pp. - always a laugh.

The euphonium thing reminded me that when I was in college I used to hang with a bohemian crowd of music performance majors and we all got together and would do concerts for each other. There was this guy who was, hands down, the best trombonist I've ever seen. One of our concerts he laid this really complex trombone concerto down. The following day I was talking about it to my professor and the dean and they asked me what I thought (since they knew this guy was good) and I said that I found it very impressive and while I could understand the complexity and the hard work the guy put into being able to play it the music itself was sorta "meh" and unremarkable, I ended with that I thought there just wasn't very good classical music written for the trombone. My professor said, "Puppy, 9 out of 10 pieces you play people will say the same thing. Obviously complicated and difficult, but the piece itself is underwhelming"

As I understand it, a lot of people are into vinyls despite the cost of needing new equipment, finding records, and not being able to play them when you're on the go.

But why don't people just buy the digitized versions of the vinyl? Like anybody can connect the record player to their laptop and record the tracks. Then you have the sound quality (ie: imperfections) of vinyl but the convenience of carrying it all on your smartphone. Or better yet just get an app that vinylifies the sound.
