I am at the point where my lack of brown nosing will start working against me. I think you need to do more ass kissing within the "Arts" than in the study of science. Business probably involves the most ass kissing. but the respect for subjectivity in arts and the sense of historical place makes it hard for good work to be enough. My principle is that I shouldn't inflate the value of my work by patronizing superiors and making face, but that does not work when your individual work gets lost in the administrative bureaucracy.

I always saw office hours and extra study hours as options for people struggling, so I never went to them. Now I realize it is there for social gain and using that social gain for an appearance of greater self. Even knowing this, I feel dirty just thinking about using it in this way.

And being so foreign to the practice, I am not sure I would be any good at it.

You need to kiss some ass and suck some dick in pretty much every industry.

It goes deeper than that.  You need to know the right asses to kiss and the right dicks to suck.  You could be kissing the ass of a loser who will drag you down along with him/her.  You can't just kiss as many asses as possible because others will notice and question where your loyalty lies.

It's almost a job in and of itself.

They're just like typical men, big and showy with absolutely no substance underneath the surface.

I don't smoke more than a few times a month but I always do a full draw and occasionally throughout a cigar I'll exhale through the nose to get the full taste of it.  Cigarettes are only really useful if you're smoking frequently, whereas you smoke a cigar mainly for the tastes rather than the slight nicotine buzz you get from it.

Left and smoked cigars outside with hot chicks and some friends, got a pizza and ended that night with horror movies.

What kind of cigars?  I smoked a nub cameroon at a party on Friday and it was horrible.  I could easily find better cigars for half the price but my friend recommended this to me.

My career may be...taking a slight detour. My cousin offered me a job in web development. I have history and experience in it. Why not? He's graduated from Howard and graduated with a business degree. Now he owns a web development place and starting to get it off the ground. He has an apartment I can stay at. He's in DC and it'll be 40 hours a week. Why the fuck not? It's not in the fucking south and it could be interesting. Could use this opportunity for meeting new people and getting connections. Still keeping my eye on Plymouth Rock Studios, though. They will always have a need for post-production assistants anyways so long as you show you have enough drive.

I'll see how it pans out. I haven't said yes yet.

Yeah, thats probably what I would do at some point. I'd rather build my own shit too instead of deal with the rigid hardware standards of an iMac. I just need a bigger screen (currently working on a 19" Acer non-widescreen SMH). But that aside, LED screen are hot, very sharp and bright.

Anyway to answer your question most women are brought up with dolls in their hand. As they grow up it becomes finding the perfect man, having the dream wedding, their own home and the two children.  I mean how can they not see it as their ultimate goal? How can they fight all that conditioning?

For men the answer is more complicated. I think men come to the realisation that they will never really achieve the career aspirations so they place their worth in society as a husband and a father. A provider that other people depend on. There is a bit of a cultural element too.

I think it ultimately comes to a sense of safety and comfort in a world that can be frightening.

or it might just have to do with values and what feels rewarding (making a family is extremely rewarding on a personal level).  IME, people who grow up in a really close, non-dysfunctional (relatively speaking, because we're all fucked up) family tend to place a lot of value on creating the same atmosphere.  There's nothing wrong with it.  Dreams and aspirations are deeply personal and yours probably seem stupid and wasteful to a good amount of people too.  

Edit: And IMO, people who aspire only to be rich and successful with nothing else in mind are living a more wasted existence.  But to each his own.

One time my grandma introduced me to some girl at her church, and after a bit of meaningless banter she said "what's your favorite food?" Does to me too.  But one of my dreams is to restore old cars and I'm sure if I made a thread on GAF about it, all the Prius drivers would come in asking me why?  I'll never make the money back that I spent to restore the car and cars are utilities I should drive one until it breaks down blah blah blah.  So I try not to judge.
