Anyone else find god debates thoroughly annoying from both sides? Everyone is arguing within the narrow ass confines of our limited understanding of life, the universe, etc. I just find it pointless. I mean yes so many debates are pointless arguments but such great minds get stuck on this. At some point who the fuck cares. I dunno, maybe I'm just being an asshole.

Despite the "narrow ass confines of our limited understanding of life, the universe," we are able to fully comprehend the claims of religion and the arguments for the existence of god.

Yes the debate is pointless, not because of out tiny ape brains but  because of the unimportance of the subject matter. Any religious person who changes his mind based on a discussion on the Internets was probably never a nutter in need of a conversion.

Well that's what I mean by who the fuck cares. No one is being enlightened, it doesn't even affect how we govern or how we think of society. It's just arguing whether or not god exists or arguing over what basis we use to judge existence. It just reminds me of philosophical debates but even more exhausting.

don't really want to go into it - on a personal level Religion does seem to help people - as an overarching concept like "The Catholic Church" they are utterly evil: protests against sex education and contraception in the Philipines, condemning condom use in AIDS riddled regions of Africa, blaming child fucking priests activity on society, being right up there driving world politics, Gays are below second class people etc etc.

I'm also baffled by the "how do you have a moral compass without religion?!" argument - it always seems to suggest that without religion any single person would be running around raping and pillaging . I'm sure this was useful back in the day - but we've moved on from then.

Yeah, when I was at Bob Jones University and had de-converted from Christianity in late 2009 the whole atheism vs theism debate was very important to me but now that I'm out and about in the real world I've stopped giving a shit.

I now see that most religious people aren't out of their minds like the religious people I was around during my childhood and during my two years at BJU so I've toned down my anti-religion and anti-theism stance a ton. Now-a-days I consider myself a post-theist or an apatheist.

Those are a specific tenet of a religion and propagated by militant religious folk. I'm purely talking about god's existence extricated from religion. We are running society at this point without him, whether or not he exists affects no one. I just think anyone asserting "facts" regarding the issue is a false prophet, whether they're a theist or atheist. It's of no consequence is it.

I'm not sure you can extract the existance from the religion - it's the cornerstone - though i agree that even if there was conclusive truth of there being no God that it would little or no effect on religion .

I'm an atheist to a degree, but I still feel like religion is a necessary and overall positive force in society. That seems to be a minority viewpoint and not one that many people wish to engage on.

Well I mean it depends; if you have a good moral code then religious conviction can probably motivate you even more. I think people are inherently good so it sounds like you might have a point.

I agree. I've grown so tired of this debate. Outside of groups like the religious right wing -- who I think could be attributed to just being assholes as a cornerstone of their culture without the need for religion -- I very much have a live and let live attitude. When we move out of the realm of "My holy book says gays are sinners" and just into the more broad realm of "I believe that there's some reason beyond random chance for the existence of life," I find it difficult to be compelled to challenge it. I don't necessarily buy into this logic myself, but I understand the why.

I also tend to think conversation often gets brought down when people insist that the scientific method should dictate the flow of any conversation. "I'm sorry, but I'm a man of science. If you can't present cogent, verifiable facts or theses that can be proven in my laboratory, then get out. Our ability to reason is what separates us from lower animals, and if you can't use logic and reason in every conversation, then I say good day to you!"
