Wii Music fits in more with their ~entertainment softwares~ (animal crossing, gameboy camera) than 'games proper', buts its not what you describe.  Essentially its a musical improv simulator, its actually a big commitment to get good results!

They were never big blockbusters outside of FF, Awesome-o, but there was a "golden" period where non-branded JRPGs could sell between 100k-200k pretty reliably.

This is still true today. Tales games sell between 150-200k. These games are niche and have their own audience who sticks with them.

I think the most successful non branded jrpg I can think is Xenosaga episode 1. That thing did VERY well from what I remember. What about DQ8 and 9?

That said, a lot of games during the golden age that were under the squaresoft umbrella did pretty well. Chrono Cross and Parasite Eve for instance.

A Square rpg does not instantly mean sales. Games like Xenogears were stinkers in terms of sales. Games like Musashiden needed demo discs to get sales boosts. Dragon Quest constantly does decent, but never great. Final Fantasy remakes tend to pretty poorly. In fact, S-E has released a whole slew of new ip's this generation only for a bulk of people to ignore them...and then complain about the lack of new S-E ips.

I think it's less that the golden age of JRPGs ended because of outside influences and more likely that Japanese studios had difficulty adjusting to HD development. Outside of being more difficult, it also increased costs and forced games to sell more copies to break even, which probably made publishers cut back on the amount of JRPGs being made.

Well Andrex, being more mad at Nintendo doesn't make you one of the good ones.

I'm not even really mad about their localization plans. It's kind of a brooding hatred formed after years and years.

Five years ago I was pretty much what Segata said, a blind hopeless fanboy hanging on Nintendo's every whim. I honestly bought into the Blue Ocean talk, and really, truly believed Wii would be the next PS2. But now as much as I hate to admit it Amirox and me probably have a lot in common with how we view Nintendo. I think I have a more positive outlook and try to see the good in them when possible, but I have no expectations whatsoever.

Hindsight is 20/20. I was wrong with a lot of things when it came to the Wii, but a lot of it was stuff I honestly believed third parties would be able to deal with, like the paltry online and graphics disparity. I didn't think those would make as much a difference as they did.

However, I can't even remember the last time I actually outright trolled another console. It must have been before GAF. I'm honestly apathetic to the other console makers. For me personally it's about Nintendo and third-parties now, and not even third-parties on Nintendo consoles. I read about and watch videos of almost all the content out there.

I've honestly been thinking lately maybe it would be better for Nintendo to go third party, a thought which I would have killed someone for saying a few years ago.  But even still, I think that would objectively be a bad route to go. They still do some interesting things with hardware, a world without the DS would be a pretty lame one. Plus, I wouldn't want them to become what Sega was for all of last gen and most of this one -- they were very clearly hit hard when they didn't have their own hardware.

I would love for Nintendo to go third party actually, never happening though. And what happened to Sega when they went third party was that they were awesome at first then the sammy merger happened.

I just think they'd have a hard time of adjusting to multi-console development. I know they could do it, but their output would suffer in some way. Maybe not in quality but quantity for sure.

A modern era Nintard would think that Nintendo was doing a good job with the 3DS.  The 3DS is the full realization of the DS and Wii -- it is by far the biggest con that Nintendo has run on gamers.  The 3DS is by far the worst deal Nintendo has offered to the consumer since the Virtual Boy: it is underpowered and overpriced with the most inane gimmick ever, bone dry software lineups, and with 13-14 year old port jobs as major titles.  Each new machine Nintendo puts out is more brazen in its raw deal to the consumer.  Nintards are simply content with looking at Nintendo stock prices and profit margins.  To them the 3DS is good because Nintendo makes money on each 3DS.  It has nothing to do with software quantity or quality.  Most of them would eat a pile of dog shit as long as it had a Nintendo seal branded into the pile.

Not really. Twilight Princess was good but it came out for GameCube a month after the Wii version, and was in the end just a port. Ocarina of Time is a full remake, and even though it doesn't have the same oomph as a brand new Zelda they're still pretty comparable. Besides that the rest of the libraries are comparable, neither towering over the other.

Besides that, the Wii didn't have any online or non-VC downloadable games for about 10 months and ~15 months, respectively. 3DS has both of those plus VC already. It also has voice chat about two years earlier than the Wii got it.

The 3DS is easily doing better at this point in its life than the DS. This gap is only going to widen later this year with Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus, etc. I think people are forgetting how bad the DS was early in its life. It's first real core game didn't hit until Mario Kart DS a year after it released, and the thing didn't really hit its stride until the one-two punch of DS Lite and NSMB 7 and 8 months after that.

Those arguments I sort of get. I was disappointed in the lack of 3DS news from E3. And Vita looks fantastic (still don't quite get the back touchpads, but eh.  ) But still, four solid Nintendo games are coming out for it this year. I don't think the 3DS's direction is off-kilter at all. It's getting more first party games much earlier in its life than... any Nintendo system I can think of.
