The turn around from Wii U to Switch is pretty incredible, and really shows what a totally misstep the former system was. So, in the end, what was it that killed the Wii U, but saved the Switch?

Same thing happened with GC -> Wii. Nintendo's done this boom-bust thing a couple times (and yet people still write them off when they're off their game.)

I think it's pretty clear that Nintendo consoles have to offer something the other systems don't. The Wii and it's motion controls offered something that was appealing and it was boosted by Nintendo support. The Wii U really did'nt. The tablet controller really in the end amounted to nothing and so you had a console that really was not really appealing. The Switch does thanks to being portable. I'm not saying "oh it's all a gimmick" or maybe I am, but I think that diminishes the point. Even if their consoles all have great Nintendo support they are always going to lack the games or features the mainstream wants. They aren't ever going to be the place people will go to for Madden or CoD. Even if the system was as strong as it's rivals. So they need something that makes it clear that the system is unique and with that software that makes use of it.  The Switch is so obvious in how unique it is that it is no way confusing to anyone that it's a system unlike the PS4 or Xbox. The WiiU really didn't. It has a tablet controller that does what beyond being an over-sized thing that displays maps. Oh boy!

Nintendo gets complacent very easily.  When a fire is lit under their asses, they are one of the best.  Which makes their lazy, complacent phases all the more frustrating.  The Switch has had a great launch year and I'll be interested to see if they keep that streak going or if they think Wii Music 2 (or whatever the Switch equivalent will be) is an acceptable leading holiday title.

yeah i think besides being a solid system, having new hi-quality zelda and mario titles, a mario kart port, and a new splatoon all helped a ton. nintendo always suffers most when they have huge dead spaces in their first party release calendar.

I saw a lot leading up to thanksgiving, but it seems like they are rarer but still findable after Black Friday. For example, right now, they are OOS on Amazon, but you can still get a bundle at GameStop.

I wouldn't draw too many conclusions on the Switch yet.

It's been launch hype + half a holiday season, with the usual cohort of diehard Nintendo fans being starved to death after the WiiU trainwreck, and pretty much every single major IP (in terms of sales) launched already. If the November NPD results leak is anything to go by, it may not end up being the massive hit it appears to at first glance.

But hopefully they keep doing reasonably well, and maybe decide putting a bit more effort into new IPs and drastic changes on old ones.

Switch is gonna outsell Wii U in 10 months, has its big holiday season in december and there are still lots if not the biggest ips left. Pokemon? Smash Brothers? Animal Crossing? 2D Mario? Proper new Mario Kart?

Sure it probably won't keep up with the ps4 Sales but the Switch will definetly be a huge success dir Nintendo. You don't sell 10 Million systems without a holiday season if you're not doing some things right.

Imagine the damage Pokemon + a possible pricedrop might do in december 2018.

I really wish we could get an unfiltered view of the supply situation of the switch. I mean, it's astounding that Japan still only gets roughly 200k per week. It's strange that Nintendo still can't seem to ramp up production. I mean, we know they are competing with pretty much every smartphone producer for parts, but you'd think they would have had enough foresight to plan ahead for a success scenario. They have been in this market for decades now.


I'm undecided on the next No More Heroes entry. Loved the first one despite (or maybe because of?) it being a horrible, janky, crass Frankenstein Monster, but found the second one to be outright dull since it was polished enough to lose appeal and choke on its inadequacies. Didn't even finish it.
To be quite honest, I'd probably rather have a NMH crossover. A "Gaiden" entry to e.g. Yakuza could be hilarious. But what do I know.

Random thought: ...just give me fucking a P.N.03 sequel. I have a craving for rhythm based combat and delicious gyrating hips. Errr, amazing presentation and music and Sci-Fi themes. Cough.

I just think it’s the way of Nintendo. They have always been conservatively run.

Theoretically we can say they shouldn’t make the same mistake twice, but otoh my guess is that being extremely conservative with supply chain and financial risks is probably a reason why Wii U didn’t completely tank the company.

It's precisely because Nintendo is so conservative that I'd expect them to cover all the bases, with scaling options both upwards and downwards in their supplier contracts. It's only prudent to keep your ass covered for all possible outcomes. Oh well. Some things we will never know with certainty. Maybe some investor Q&A or end of fiscal year disclosures will allow us to dig into this a bit more. Eventually, I mean.

Switch almost at 3 million (230k sales) and MariO selling 110k copies (a substantial increase wk/wk, now over 1 Million total, plus digital).

200-odd k sales once again. Will they empty their storage for the last big week, and if so, how much will that amount to? The suspense.

....So, how about them Japan numbers, huh. PS4 is probably going to be down YOY at the end of the calendar year, which obviously spells doom for the entire company. Sony should obviously just stick to selling insurance. The market has spoken.
Tongue in cheek fanboying aside, I'm (very) mildly shocked that the exclusive MonHan Bundle and MHW demo/beta thing didn't do more to the numbers. MS on either of its platforms is nonexistent in Japan, so I'd have thought that the positive word of mouth and surely substantial PR expenditure from Capcom would have pushed PS4 sales upwards a bit more. Oh well.

Despite my being a Ninthing and by now already owning a switch, I was deeply concerned initially that a 300+USD tablet with middle of the road stats would crater so hard it would send Nintendo into a tailspin. I'm glad my lack of faith was unfounded.
Then again, I also thought PSP and 3DS would sell like shit (and that the panicked 3DS price drop would never work), so maybe I should just stay out of the prediction league as far as handhelds are concerned.

Now, let's see how the software side develops. I mean, I'm fine with just Nintendo, Indies and a bunch of tentpole releases, but more is always better. Wii gave me a whole boatload of low polish and/or low budget games that I enjoyed far more than I had any right to. So, bring back Boom Blox. MySims. And the My Life As A _____ franchise.

I don't think there are any solid, recent numbers for the Xbox One, but it's probably around 25 million. Unless the Xbox One X really takes off long-term or the Switch completely craters, I could see the Switch hitting 30 million sometime next year [if not sooner].

Wii shipments were selling out basically as soon as they entered the store for almost a year after the console launched, so it definitely sold well below it's potential. The Switch supply has been fairly sparse, but I've seen it around in stores, so it's probably sold about as well during it's first year as it could.

Portable console gaming is what is selling it for most folks, I'd assume. The fact that it actually has gotten third parties (like Rocket League getting a port) helps it as well.

Well let's just hope they keep at it. Both the Wii and the Wii U were launched with big promises of 3rd party support. Wii U got a couple ports of old games at the first year and then nothing

But then again if the Switch manages to retain at least part of the 3DS market it will keep doing good, and it has almost no competition on that front
