Watching the women's MITB, there are some creative spots that I haven't really seen in the million of ladder matches over the years, but fuck are almost all of them executed terribly. It's been a while since I've seen something so sloppy and full of just standing around waiting for the next spot. Fucking Ember just stood on a ladder on the FLOOR for like 3 minutes waiting for someone to walk close enough for her to hit her finisher. And this was just after 5 of the women had fallen off the ladder, meaning she could have probably won the match had she climbed the ladder in the ring instead. Mandy Rose in particular looked completely lost the entire match. The crowd seemed pretty into it but god damn was that match a mess.

Also why the fuck does Joe have a mullet  :lol :lol :lol

The Hardcore title is back, now called the "24/7" title.  The crowd booed at Foley's unveil and explanation.   :lol

Supposed to be an open challenge belt that can be defended at any time, just like the Hardcore title used to be in the Attitude era, with it up for grabs by Raw, SD, NXT, 205 Live, and NXT UK.

And so far...it's mostly lower-card guys running out to claim it.  LOL.

Alright I made it to about 2 minutes into Miz/Shane and shut MITB off. God damn I legit can't remember a time I had less interest in ANYTHING WWE. Everything about it from the production to the lighting to the in ring to the commentary is like....current WWE is The Big Bang Theory of pro wrestling.

Taking all the nonsensical booking issues away and WWE desperately needs a complete rehaul of their presentation. They've essentially been running with the same set up since 1997, plus or minus fancier screens every few years. Every show in every arena looks exactly the same, the camera shots are the same every week (that gif of Lars powerbombing minorities for 6 weeks where every shot is the same beat for beat down to the second each time :jeanluc ) and are all so boring because they're all hard cams and crane shots and the only time they use handhelds is to do shaky cam or WOAH LOOK AT HOW CHAOTIC THIS IS bullshit of zooming in and out repeatedly. The commentary still runs with the heel/face bickering partners shit they've been doing since the 80s but now with people who are just annoying, not clever, have no chemistry, and aren't allowed to run wild like Bobby Heenan and Jesse Ventura were. The lighting makes everything look like 90s sitcom, the way they transition to backstage stuff and back is treated like they're from separate shows in that there aren't any transitions..they just fade in and out like dream sequences.

There's just no energy whatsoever from the production side that it really doesn't matter what is going on in the ring, but then you add the booking that literally makes no sense and doesn't matter at all, the completely scripted promos (and all the good ones being random youtube clips and never shown on TV), the authority figure characters that they still have even after making an angle out of getting rid of them, never ending feuds with endless rematches that have no progression and rarely even a real ending, they just stop one day.

It's just so...unappealing.

I amused myself during the hardcore belt segments that Vince McMahon would be screaming to anyone who would listen:

"SEND OUT MORE SCRUBS! MORE! SCRUBS! IS TATANKA STILL ALIVE? ARE WE PAYING KNUCKLEBALL SCHWARTZ? GET HIM OUT THERE!"

There was a funny bit where all the loser wrestlers were chasing the champion and they ran past two other wrestlers who didn't give a damn about the title.

I want to point out that both AEW and Starrcast (not AEW, but AEW adjacent and endorsed and the Bucks/Cody/JR are appearing at it) had a talent they knew was not going to be on the show (PAC for AEW, Ric Flair for Starrcade) but did not announce the missing talents through their official channels, instead opting to do it through Dave Meltzer, so they could continue to promote them for the events for an extra few days before finally announcing it through their channels after days of letting everyone else report it.

It's hard to say which is shadier, as AEW knew the Page/PAC match wasn't going to happen over a month ago and continued to promote it until a week before the event, but Conrad is Ric's son in law and lied about his health issues saying TMZ was exaggerating and Ric was totally going to be there buy your tickets now when he knew Ric wasn't going to be out of the hospital and able to travel (and likely Ric knew before he had this procedure done) and then when it was announced Ric wouldn't be allowed to travel, Conrad basically threw his father in law under the bus saying Ric lied to the family about the severity of his health issues. Doing this after WWE decimated the event by forcing Kurt Angle and Taker to pull out after they had been promoted, then WWE giving them the Magee/Hart match for them to air only to air the match and a doc on it the 5 days before on WWE Network ( :lol :lol :lol ) makes it seem both more shady and more understandable.

It's kind of amazing both sets of carny fucks (and Conrad might be the biggest carny fuck of them all right now) pulled this same trick on the same week on a weekend that's supposed to be about the fresh new faces changing the wrestling world :lol

I heard that and thought of the The Simpsons episode where the monotone bank teller says filling out account forms is more thrilling than a weekend with Batman.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is very progressive and women can even drive cars.

The actual in ring stuff at ppvs isn't bad by and large (when it's not a pointless minute long squash like Roman-Elias, or doesn't involve HHH having a 20+ minute vanity match 10 years after he can go that long) but it's all devoid of meaning. Everything stro said upthread is right- nothing fucking matters so why care. This isn't wrestling. This is the programming that surrounds chicken finger ads. Who cares.

DON thoughts

Their production is straight up 2002-2003 WWE, it looks exactly like a show from that era, with a few flourishes from WWECW :lol

It's their first PPV and they're already doing 5 hour shows :stahp

Pre show didn't fill me with much confidence, as it was full of production snafus and both matches seemed to last FOREVER. The third guy in the booth is straight up David Crockett/Bob Caudle tier. Not only was he awkward as hell and constantly stumbling over his lines (and also terrible at selling the PPV), he had zero chemistry with JR and Excalibur, who didn't have much chemistry between them to begin with. I think it's going to be a struggle for them to get used to who is supposed to be the main play by play guy and who is the color, because both seemed to be trying to take the reigns as the lead most of the show. JR wasn't very good as the color man the few times he's done it, but he's too old and shitty to be the lead play by play so we'll see how that works out. All three were consistently lost every time the cameras came to them, so I don't know who is running the actual production in the headsets, but they'll for sure need to work on that.

I'm stunned looking at the actual time of the matches that every match wasn't 20+ minutes. Even the pre-show match felt so fucking long. It was all pretty solid to good, although the women's four way was a terrible omen for the AEW women's division because it was easily the worst match on the show and was full of botches and generally came off very amateur hour for how much they've hyped themselves up.

Cody/Dustin was, by far, match of the night and easily the best thing Cody's ever been involved in. Which is funny because destroying HHH's throne with a sledgehammer was easily the corniest and :lol :lol :lol thing of his career and every bit as lame and self aggrandizing as HHH's WM entrances. It's not a coincidence that the other best match Cody was involved in also had Goldy in it (Rhodes vs Shield). Haven't seen a bladejob like that outside of deathmatch trash in many, many years. Dustin bleeding like it was 1992 :aah They sealed the deal with a hug and a kith :tocry

:lol :lol :lol :lol at getting Bret to introduce the title a month after he went into the WWE HOF for the second time. Adam Page is the most forced "star" I can remember in a long time. Out of the blue one day he got attached to the Bullet Club and they kept pushing that he's secretly this amazing talent and such a star, and you have Cody doing interviews saying Page is the best wrestler in the entire group, etc etc, but man he's about as bland as can be. The best thing I could say about him is that he's "solid". Also :lol at Meltzer getting worked when he was told the PAC replacement was going to be an even better match for Page anyway and it ends up being Page as the 22nd entrant in a 21 man battle royale on the pre show :lol :lol :lol :lol

Lucha Bros/Young Bucks was a bit of a let down to me. I expected some real crazy shit, but really the Bucks have toned down/aged out of super crazy spot fest stuff over the past few years, and Lucha Bros work a million dates a year including the night before. I did like the Bucks doing tribute spots to some of their bigger rivals over the years. I'm a sucker for that kind of shit in wrestling, along with guys going back to moves/finishes from earlier gimmicks in big time matches like Austin doing the stun gun and million dollar dream at WM 17 and Summerslam 2001. I've seen the Lucha Bros have crazier and more exciting matches with both LAX and the Rascalz over the past year :yeshrug Fenix as usual was the stand out of  :gladbron moments

:dead at JR saying Jericho was in the best shape he's been in in many years as they cut to a shot of him looking literally the fattest and flabbiest he's ever looked in his life. Match kind of sucked, Jericho is a mess. JR kept pointing out Dustin was 50 and this was his last ride, but he's in significantly better shape than Jericho at 48 who has taken a ton of time off in the past decade, and Goldy also had 10 years as a drug addict AND this is his first match back after knee surgery, yet never pointed out that Jericho is clearly a fat hobbled drunk who is now built like a full sized dwarf and is out of breath 5 minutes into any match. He really looks like garbage. His gear looks like shit, too. So is his fedora. At least he isn't doing the goth make up in the US :lol His NJ matches need lots of gimmicks and bullshit to hide how he can't go anymore, and this didn't have much in that regard besides the table. Why does he keep doing half hour matches  ??? ??? ??? Also since he's busted open everyone he's worked with in NJ and now AEW, I'm positive he's going to kill someone with that elbow. He's so sloppy with his worked punches, there's no way he's going to be able to pull that elbow every time.

:dead :dead :dead :dead :dead at Lex Ambrose lying to Vince for months, getting 4 months of praise and a long drawn out goodbye on TV because Vince believed that Dean really was just taking a break and would be back once he recharged so they wanted to keep it on good terms, only for Dean to post a twitter vid breaking out of prison literally 5 minutes after his contract expired and then immediately signing a multi year contract with AEW.  :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Can't wait to see how Dave Meltzer spins AEW's first show ending with a 50 year old fat out of shape drunk WWE star pinning Kenny Omega 100% clean, followed by a guy coming off a 5 year WWE stint that ended 3 weeks ago beating up Kenny to be the last shot of the show, the voice of the company being a 70 year old long tenured WWE announcer, the ring announcer being WWE's ex ring announcer, one of their lead refs being 70 year old former WWE senior official, their title being introduced by a WWE legend, and their show looking exactly like a WWE show from 15 years ago. From a production aspect, they didn't bring ANYTHING new to the table whatsoever, all of their "unique" features like the ranking and stats based systems will be "revealed later" even though they've had at least 6 months to plan this out. They've been using phrases like "change the world" "change the universe" and "revolution" but it's just a standard wrestling promotion that isn't WWE, even though it feels very, very much like the WWE of 15 years ago, moreso than it did WCW or even TNA.

I thought it was fine, not the revolutionary bullshit they and marks were hyping it up to be. Cody and The Bucks spent Starrcast talking shit about WWE without being prompted, Brandi said it was going to be the best PPV in years, that lame ass thing with HHH's throne, all for it to be a solid Ruthless Aggression Era show and bring absolutely zero new ideas to the table in terms of presentation, look, feel, or anything else. Same camera angles, same lighting style, same entrance, same cuts to the announcers for some reason way away from the ring having to stand up in front of the desk, same voices, same WWE champions...I was expecting them to really put their own spin and take some risks to produce at least a unique visual style but instead they're just putting on a WWE sized production but they're not WWE.

Maybe once they start doing weekly TV and need angles and vignettes it will be different, but DON looked like a solid 15 year old WWE show to me.

yes to both

they are also playing to identity politics by making statements on diversity and then have every presenter and winner from Saturday be a white person (other than the match with all asian ladies). they seem to be going very hard on "whatever wwe does, we do the opposite" in their words but so far it seems much like the same stuff.

but it's been one show so not really much to judge yet.

i do like Mox just giving a promo to a camera over having some bland lady robot ask Dean Ambrose his feelings on XYZ and then just sorta staring into space as he rants and raves and walks away as the interviewer continues to stare like every WWE backstage promo.

They had bright, flashing lights, pyro and loud noises, the arena going dark multiple times with no notice. Surely that along with large, loud crowds of people isn't great for people that have sensory overload issues.

Yeah she did some press a few weeks ago talking about how they're going to be sensory inclusive for people on the Assimilate Spectrum or epilepsy and other sensory issues, but I have no idea how you could possibly do that for a wrestling show. Besides maybe hand out ear muffs and have warnings on the screens before lights flash or something?

Raw was no different than usual.  If Vince felt at all "threatened" by AEW, he sure isn't showing it.

Ain't no party like a Brock party.

Also, I love that Bork Lesnar doesn't know the WWE and had to be informed he had a year to cash in his boom box.
