Actually, it's hard to say.  Niche stuff gets translated when people at SEGA have free time between important projects.  That's why World Destruction and Valkyria Chronicles got released but 7th Dragon didn't.  Miku is obviously niche, so very likely the same guys that normally would be doing RGG are working on that instead.

Chances would still be pretty low even in the absence of Miku, though.  Almost anything is worth localizing ahead of RGG after Dead Souls performance.

Yeah, but Miku is singing in Japanese and has Japanese subtitles based on the demo alone. What exactly are they localizing here? Unless me turning the sound off made me miss the English.

The real reason is that Miku is a music game and those are farrrrr less costly to localize in regards to menus and a few changes/licenses (I guess vocaloid/Miku itself would be cheaper than actual music?) than translating a series that has had 4-5 releases in the west but didn't exactly sell too well to make that investment worth it again.

If these guys wanted to play it that badly, import the fucking game and use a walk through. It's better than nothing. My Japanese isn't great, but I've managed to play though, understand and enjoy RGG 3, 4, 5 Of the End and Kenzan.

I'm assuming there's a translation guide by now. No clue.

ThePatrick said he was working on one, but he's got real world responsibilities now, so he can't do them as quickly as he used to.  And ThePatrick is the only person who ever does those translation guides for RGG.

Ah. His Kenzan guide was great for a bunch of old style Japanese that went over my head.

The whining about Kenzan! not being localized and the flat out refusal by some to import and use a guide just kills me. The game exists and there is a way for you to play it... but noooo I don't want to read.

The major barrier is keeping up with the guide. If you were able to put the translation guide in the game as a translation dump yourself with minimal hackery I think that'd be a boon in regards to import/"fan-translating" games that aren't going to leave Japan for the English-only fanbase.

there is nothing better in the world than responding to someone complaining about no english release with "oh, you don't speak japanese? :smug"

aww yeah

I try not to rub it in during all the Type-0 threads.  Not getting the games is painful enough as it is for these people!

You're such a nice guy, I can't see you saying anything negative about anyone. :-[

E3 was a blast this year, so much more hype than the last few years, lots of great games and trailers, almost no waggle and motion controls.

Maybe I'll end up canceling my PS4 preorder when I realize I don't really want to play any of the launch games, but eh. We'll see.

As for Japanese import games.. I thought there'd be more worth importing. I have Super Robot MK III preordered, and Daisenryaku Perfect for PS3 preordered (which keeps getting delayed over and over..)

I can understand it.  People want to sit down and be entertained, not keep looking at a guide and miss out on all the dialog and other crap that you wouldn't get if you weren't fluent in Japanese.  Running around, not knowing what the hell anyone is talking about, with a FAQ telling you where to go and what do doesn't sound particularly exciting for a game like this.

It's not optimal, but if you want to play a game that isn't coming over really bad, it's better than never getting to play it. [shrug]

Oh yeah, I should mention...

I've got Gundam Breaker and SRW MKIII preordered. I want Drag-On Dragoon 3 and Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash as well, but will probably just wait until I go to Japan next April in the off-chance that either get announced for NA (highly unlikely).

Yeah, that's basically it for me. I want to just enjoy the game, and not spend my time jumping back and forth between the screen and a dictionary. When I was working 10+ hours a day in a Japanese office, and then coming home to speak Japanese with my kids, playing a game in Japanese just felt like additional homework for a Japanese class which never ended.

Took the majority -but not all- of my American 360 games (and got away with throwing Biohazard 5 in there too...reversible RE5 cover FTW) and ended up doing the stupid Gamestop power card thing (it gave me a credit boost so why not) for about $399 in store credit.  Picked up two PS3 games I wanted to replace the 360 versions and the remaining $295 went towards a PS4, plus $5 deposits on Watchdogs, Killzone 4, and CoD Ghosts. Might change all that up later.

Didn't trade in the 360 yet since I'm going to do a system transfer to my older Japanese system, but they told me that I'd get about $150 for it, which will pay off the remaining amount on the PS4. I'm also going to get a 50% additional credit coupon from them in the next day or so which they said I could apply to the 360 trade in.

So I'm can't complain when the majoity of the games I got rid of I still have on other platforms...and now the PS4 is paid for.

God damn't I'm doing this. I'd get about $500 alone on the games. And damn, I still have a launch 360, I should trade it in before it dies.

Just keep in mind that I got a nice credit boost for taking advantage of their trade-in promotion stuff for new games/systems.  Definitely do it if you want credit towards new game releases or the PS4/Xbone.

The clerks also seemed to be noticeably for the PS4 against the Xbone, saying that Xbone won't have used game support to anyone asking about new systems. A thread popped up about this on gaf so it seems to be happening all over the place.

Yeah there is a trade in 3,5, or 7 games promo thing going on. So really it's a good time to strike, thats why I've been thinking about it.

It also could just be the E3 hype for me though.

Reining in development costs (which the industry is going to *have* to do) involves firing a shit-ton of people.  The industry basically did the ol' classic "expanding too much too quickly" thing and is now in a bit of a horrifying pinch.  Cliffy doesn't want people fired.
Reminds me of the early 2000s

edit: I think every industry does this at some point, too. Overexpansion followed by contraction then a leveling off. Seems we're edging up the shrinking right now.

We've been edging the shrinking for years now. The costs of development have outpaced the the "demand" for the "supply" of games. Too many shooters/fighters/whatever out there vying for too few consumer dollars (okay, there is a lot of consumer dollars, just the "demand" for many of those titles isn't there, but work with me here). It's why so many studios have been trying to chase the Call of Duty dollar: If their game under-performs, they're done. End of discussion, they're done.

Which is why Oscar is right: The industry just needs to fire a shit load of people and make less games. I think art-departments would probably be one of the safer areas to avoid laying off in regards to "GUD GRAPH-FIX" being highly demanded in console games (reason why we have bloat and stuff in the first place, ironically) but laying off writers and expensive voice talent (sorry Patrick Stewart, but we really don't need you as the 4th Age King of Tameril) and get back to games being efficient and stuff.

It's pretty telling when Dark/Demon's Souls, a game from Japan is made by a team of... shit, I'm forgetting... 70(?) people and is acclaimed by the "hardcore" more than an Assassin's Creed/Resident Evil iteration made by a team of 700+ people. One laser focused their design documents and things they wanted to go for before doing it while the other bloated out and is a convoluted and buggy mess with a mish-mash of mission directive/mechanic changes all throughout the game.

Here's a bunch of stuff I saw at e3

Xbone controller - the new force feedback added under the triggers (as well as what's in the handles) will have some interesting uses, it's already well implemented in Forza. The change in weight distribution makes it feel a lot lighter, but I was told it's actually slightly heavier. Hard to tell how the new dpad will work since it wasn't used but it feels like it is an improvement. Otherwise it's better than ever and will be perfect for PC

PS4 contoller - the handles are longer, and the new curved triggers are fantastic. But it still has "those" sticks. If it had the Xbox controller sticks, I think I'd like it better than the Xbox controller, it feels really comfortable and light.

nVidia Shield - posted my impressions in the other thread, really liked it despite the weight.

gamez

Forza 5 - Felt very similar to Forza but the addition of different vibration under the triggers as well as the handles was pretty cool and very noticeable.
Crimson Dragon - more Panzer Dragoon style gameplay, wanted to play more than the single stage provided.
Titanfall - probably one of the best things I saw, it's very fast paced and the transition between mechs + foot combat is very quick. The maps are a bit more vertical than most shooters, but still felt a little small after seeing Destiny.
Ryse - looks good but very generic and scripted (which may have been by design for the show). Typical launch game.
Kinect Sports Rivals - could tell that the new Kinect is better at recognising fine movement, and it's a deeper motion controlled game but still feels like something from 3 years ago
Some golf game by Zoe Mode - Everybody's Golf style game that doesn't look any better than an Xbox 360 game.

Drive Club - Big PGR vibe with scoring for drifts etc, but with competitions on different sections of track and the obvious team based racing. Only 35% done and 30fps, but didn't look like much. Another typical launch game.
Killzone whatever -
Infamous PS4 - Looked the most next gen out of all the PS4 games I saw, tried to hold 60fps with a lot of destruction going on.
Rain (PS3) - Arty stealth adventure game, was very interesting

Mario 3D World - Taking away the emphasis on co-op/"competitive" play, this was quite good. Some very simple levels but also some very challenging ones. Would certainly pick it up if I had a Weeooooo
Wonderful 101 - Looks interesting but wasn't much fun to play in the short time I had. Would probably be ok for $20
Wind Waker HD - Waggle (optional) to look through the telescope :( Also was jaggy :( Still it's Wind Waker so
Pikmin 3 - Even the new Nintendo couldn't screw this up, was very good
Donkey Kong - surprisingly interesting despite the fact it's full of waggle
Cloudberry Kingdom - unforgiving random multiplayer platformer with a ton of customisation.
Sonic Worlds - The best Sonic game in years? Faint praise I know but it's playable which is more than can be said for past Sonic games

Dying Light - yet another zombie surival game but there's an emphasis on escape & movement. Very fluid like Mirrors Edge, and 60fps, one of the better looking next gen games I saw.
Mad Max - Avalanche open world game :drool . Lots of car customisation (engines, brakes, wheels etc) as well as vehicle armour. Map looked absolutely huge but not sure how much variety in objectives there could be.
South Park - lots of fart jokes and looks exactly like the show
Saints Row IV - Very much Saints Row 3 with Crackdown super powers. Should be incredible :rejoice
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z - yet another zombie game, but this one doesn't take itself too seriously, it's super fast and the art style is great.
COD Ghosts - underwater level & remote control dog. GOTY
Destiny - Looks to be borrowing a lot of stuff from MMOs, like public events and coloured, tiered loot (common, rare etc). The one thing it has over Titanfall is the openess of the world. Oh and it also has a /dance command just like WOW :-\
Plants v Zombies Garden Warfare - more shooter than tower defense, wasn't expecting much and was still disappointed.
Dead Rising 3 - everything is great until they start talking about the drone/artillery strikes. Still some light heartedness with the costumes (womens clothing, mascot outfits) but the story is meant to be more "mature".
Disney Infinity - one of the biggest surprises of the show for me, I was pretty impressed with it. It's nothing like Skylanders at all, each playset has it's own self contained game that lasts 6-10 hours, which is used with the same disc. You can put any of the characters into each set, they all have 2 player co-op and there are power up coins/tokens that you can use on each character as well. There's also a Toybox mode, which is Little Big Planet crossed with Minecraft, and each new playset adds more items to the Toybox. This mode is also available to 4 players, and there's all the sharing/uploading options that you'd expect. I can see this being huge for those who have kids, either playing co-op or building their own worlds to play int. It's more much more interesting than Skylanders and I don't think they're comparable at all besides the figures.

Borys reading fail: There are figures, but it's otherwise unlike Skylanders. I'm interested in Infinity, but not enough to preorder the SE for a ltd. edition figure. Still: Mr Incredible and Jack Sparrow in an open world toybox sound like something I can do with my son.

PS4 contoller - the handles are longer, and the new curved triggers are fantastic. But it still has "those" sticks. If it had the Xbox controller sticks, I think I'd like it better than the Xbox controller, it feels really comfortable and light.

Care to elaborate?

Reminds me of the early 2000s

edit: I think every industry does this at some point, too. Overexpansion followed by contraction then a leveling off. Seems we're edging up the shrinking right now.
That failure is built in and it's going to stay that way until everybody has perfect knowledge of the markets they operate in, which entertainment industries are unlikely to ever have. If they can raise the stakes based on optimistic projectioins someone's pulled out of their ass they're going to do it, out of sheer desperation.
It's kind of funny to see companies run into the same walls (across all industries, really) but all-consuming growth is somehow still the motto, especially for publically traded companies.

AC3 sold more than 10m copies. That's the ludicrous part of it all. The shit works really well IF they hit a homerun. It works so well in fact that they'll keep swinging until their arms fall off. That's the idiocy of it all.

Stick placement, I assume. It still has that mirror placement instead of changing where the D-pad--that has become less useful as time goes by, may I add--is.

Yep, that's another problem. They don't know when to stop while they're ahead.

Yeah, that sold-in vs sold-through is always a nice bit of sales/marketing CYA.

Despite franchise fatigue, despite the relatively worse critical reception and technical flaws out the gate.

edit: Whoops, didn't see that. Still, AC is huge for Ubi and still beats Dark Souls and the like handily.

I'm a Sales Age featherweight so I don't know how these usually pan out, but I assume that they will go one or two swings beyond what's profitable. Them going full steam ahead on AC: Black Flag could mean either.

AC4 is gonna have such a huge drop.  Wonder if it'll kill the franchise.

No I meant how loose they are and the thumb grip on the top isn't much better than the current DS3.

Yeah I think this game is perfect for those who play the Lego games with their kids currently.

I wish they'd have jumped way ahead in time, to WWI. Fokker plane fights, sneaking through a hazy no-man's land while artillery goes off around you, etc.

I would buy that game.
