Microsoft also announced today a loosening of the Xbox One's region restrictions. "You could buy a console in any country and use it any country," Whitten said. "You can use any disc in that console."

OK, maybe this region free thingy is real.

Of course it was for real, everyone was reporting it based on today's MS interviews. I just didn't wanna embarrass you in front of your friends.

lol @ himu

I'm not buying the bone period. Even after this announcement. You have to be a fool to buy that shit after they were the ones to come up with it. This should still be considered the joke it is. Still getting a ps4.

But Sony also had DRM structures in place...they just decided to drop using them before MS did.

Both systems are essentially the same now, although one comes with a camera and costs 100 bones more.

It's back to being all about the games again, as it should be.

What's with all the "Too Late MS" people? Are the consoles are even out yet?

They mean it's too late, they've already gotten emotionally invested in the other console, like a small child or a sports fan.

I am happy for MS doing this though. I'm actually completely shocked they did it. Now that they've gotten rid of it, maybe the companies can actually fight via software for a change.

I find it ironic that a majority of you that are happy about this news have Steam accounts. Yet when it comes to a company trying something similar you knock them. Thanks to the lack of education on Microsoft's part in explaining the benefits of DRM, I lose out on many benefits that I would have been afforded one of which would have been the ability to do more with my software than a stupid disc ever would.  I don't know if it's because of my situation, but I must be privileged to have an internet connection.

To those that say that the Family sharing is nothing more than a pie in the sky idea, your wrong. If any company could have made it work it would have been Microsoft. I definitely don't see Sony or Nintendo ever trying to do something like that. Let alone be successful in implementing it.

The only reason, and really, the only damned reason I'm so on-board with Steam are their sales. Price. 100% do not give a shit about anything else. Fuck the community, fuck cards, fuck Steam workshop.

Would prices and sales have been anywhere near as good on an MS system? I really doubt it.

At least Sony fans have less of a reason to be insufferable cunts now.

People want choice other than digital only. The digital age has been going on longer for music and movies, but physical formats still get bought and offer a leash-free option.

Also, the idea we would get steam-like sales on a digital platform that has no competition was always silly.

They can try again next gen by not including physical discs AKA Steambox.

Their approach was dumb. Either go full digital or don't fucking bother.

G, xbone drm was (:obama) nothing like steam. Unfuck yourself breh.

You may not remember steam in its early days, it wasn't perfect. It was horrible, but it got better. And this was one of those situations where it might have seemed sucky, but it would have gotten better. The fact it offered more than what steam does currently was an awesome step in the right direction. Sadly the throngs of idiots speaking out against DRM got the better of Microsoft.

Yeah, Sony jsut judged the market better on the DRM thing. They were both doing it. Nintendo had no interest in it because they wouldn't want to spend money on building the infrastructure to accomplish it and would have given them minimal gain.

1. If they thought they could get away with it, they totally would.  They're not your fucking buddy, dummy.

Yep, the only reason they 180'd is because they must've seen the pre-order numbers between the new X-box and PS4. The backlash was finally too strong/too concrete to continue down that path.

And frankly, I still think that people that suddenly are going to buy the new X-box because of this decision are stupid. After MS has said they "know better"/their policies "benefit you" I don't trust them as far as I can throw them not to suddenly grab everyone that buys the system by the short-hairs and change policies or gradually introduce the original policies again but at a slower/not as noticeable pace. May be paranoid, but they lost me from the first announcement and can't get me back.

I haven't purchased anything on Steam for a price above 10€, the majority for a pricepoint around 5€. If there is such an extreme difference in price, especially if you can wait, similarities in DRM become neglible.

Also, what would have been the benefits? If game sharing would have worked as advertised I bet they would have talked a lot more about that. You bet there would have been lots of restrictions...
