I kinda can't make sense of this. I knew about a huge gaming-related news item well in advance before it went public last year, among some other big non-gaming stories. I wouldnever have given serious thought of running to GAF with any of the details, although it very briefly crossed my mind. My career would've ended and I would have been legally/financially fucked. My guess is she is really comfortable with the people at her job and overconfident in her job security. Or just really rich and simply not giving a damn about being jobless or hopping to another cushy job through her connections. I've known a few people to quit their well-paying jobs on a whim to just "take a year off," go backpacking in South America, etc. --and then go right back to another fancy job.

Yes. The series was DEAD without the online functions.

Wii brings the online functions that the PSP version didn't have: It suddenly starts to gain a cult following beyond a niche of Sony gamers that were strictly using LAN tunneling to play with people from longer distances than a sneeze range.

I was making a comment on the quality of Smash 3DS versus the Wii U version. Personally, I found the hype for it a bit absurd since Smash is a console game to me. (And ipso facto, the 3DS version is basically completely forgotten now that the Wii U version is out.

In a sales-age thread, saying MH has better potential on a console (as the linked poster did) has been proven false basically since the franchise was first created. And yes, that includes the west. All the console games (1, Tri, 3U Wii U) have sold jack shit compared to the handheld ones (F, F2, FU, 3U 3DS, especially 4U.)

Going back to the conversation of quality, I would very much prefer MH on a console. 3U was easily the best setup in the series with the handheld for local play, console for online and 1080p, and save-syncing between them.

But that poster was displaying some mad salt. Monster Hunter would not sell better on a console, period. Even if they did the whole AAAA thing and give it the graphics of The Order (as so many in the "modernize MH!!!!" crowd crow for) would not produce the sales that 4U has.

Technically, that's kinda the case. Capcom completely ignored the fact the PSP (and PS2) had network capability (IIRC the second PS2 title does have online, but it's been a while) and the only network infrastructure was the download missions for local/LAN wifi.

It wasn't until they went onto the Wii, saw that there was built-in internet (and not needing an adapter) that Capcom finally went "oh, hey there's this online thing. Maybe we should try it to get this to gain traction in the west."

Edit- I'm not sure online can be called solely responsible for the series' rising popularity. 3U 3DS didn't have it and it outsold Tri and 3U Wii U.

Honestly I worry a bit about Xenoblade 2. I mean it's not much of a history but if you follow history there's not a trend of the 2nd follow up to a Xeno game being any good. I still physically shudder when someone even mentions Xenosaga 2.

I started a Xenosaga series playthrough. got up to an hour into 2. I hear it's only 20-ish hours, so I'll go back one of these days. I realize there are lots of problems with the game but even just the change in VA and character designs was enough to throw me off. Everyone in 1 was perfectly fine, why'd they scrap them?! All they needed to do was continue on with the space opera nonsense and not change everything. Fun fact: a person who worked on it posted online that they were gonna commit suicide after it came out.
