It's funny because it highlights that early review copies are not so much entitlement by the press, but first and foremost a good way for the publishers to control their narrative. Not sure that computes with all gaffers...

What would a roided up Mass Effect be? The entire franchise so far has been a third person shooter set in linear levels with light RPG elements. Would a roided up version be like Elder Scrolls or GTA? Mass Effect had the least amount of scope compared to every other RPG franchise that gen, except when compared to FFXIII.

Hardly grave but it is injust and in some ways inaccurate.

First, the creators obviously want people to be surprised. Kotaku and Polygon are ruining that. I think it is categorically different than the other streamers because of the audience size and established presence of these sites.

Second, people go to these sites for reviews. These sites are streaming an unpatched build and will influence consumers' choice to buy the updated and potentially significantly different product. Unless they put it up front that this is a pre-release build and an overlay on the video saying as much (and I don't know because I don't visit either site) they are effectively spreading misinformation.

I've been watching the various NMS streams for days, and from everything I've seen, it's exactly what I'd hoped it would be. People who thought this was going to be more than an exploratory/light survival game built it up in their heads way too much.

Well I think my problem with NMS is that at first it seemed to be a small quaint Indie Game. It was announced at a small tv thing and at first did'nt seem to be some big PS4 title. Then Sony started to heavily push it and then all of a sudden its a $60 full retail game. So it seems the messaging has become that it is a big AAA game even if it really isn't.

But I don't know maybe the marketing has never been clear that it is basically a Minecrafitsh game. I remember at work people we're talking like it was some expansive MMO were they could travel the universe in co-op or something, not something more akin to the sign stuff from Dark Souls when it comes to online.

I'm not interested in it because I'm not into aimless find your own fun Minecraft games, but also because it seems like it's already gained this rabid fanbase.

Yah I saw it last night. Really loved Harley, Deadshot, and Boomerang. But you're absolutely right, the movie was messy as fuck. The enchantress was neat when she was all tribal and dirty, but the acting was fucking hideous once she was enchantress prime or whatever. Wiggling all over the place like an awkward dope. The whole plot was stupid and didn't give me any reason to care why it was even happening. The main villains just hung out the entire time while they sent easily dispatchable drones out for "reasons". When it comes down to it, I'd rather they had just made a Harley Quinn movie, because she stole the show.

Yeah. Pretty much exactly my thoughts. The trailers for this were roughly 19x better than the final product. Will Smith was actually really good and yeah, I'd pay to watch Margot as Harley all day erryday.

Not surprised SS ended up shit for multiple reasons

1. MOS and BvS both sucked
2. Assault on Arkham was basically the test run for a movie and sucked
3. Suicide Squad comics also kind of suck
4. 90% of the hype from WB was about how crazy Leto was off screen to get in character, to make sure you knew he was weird and kooky like Heath Ledger and therefore legit, while no one actually spoke about his on screen performance
5. WB has no faith in their talent and will slice the shit out of a movie the second negatives come up, then over-correct and fuck it up worse

It's a cool idea in broad strokes: the Dirty Dozen with supervillains.  But the execution looked like a late 1990s 2extreme4u video game ad.

Perfect storm of endearing indie game promising to do innovative stuff and a Sony endorsed title I guess.

Add in that early streams for the game are showing the game is not matching the unrealistic expectations the fanbase created for it like having multiplayer or building your own bases they teased in trailers. Then we have the current fuckery where Sony's refusing to send out review code till "The Day 1 patch is finished" which a few editors have said will be on Monday while release date and review embargo on Tuesday. So with the current reports it's still a hefty 15-30 hour game at least. No one would finish the review in time for launch. So a few outlets like Polygon, Kotaku and Giant Bomb sourced some independent shops that would break street date for them and got a hold of the game which means they don't have to deal with embargo terms and NDA's (Since they only depend on accepting the review copy from the publisher). Oh and the PC version got moved back to the 12th because the developer wants extra time.

It's The Order 1886 and Street Fighter V again. Except about 20 times worse

People's imaginations ran wild and filled in the blanks for what the game was, while not understanding that what we saw in the trailers WAS the big draw.  A no loading screen transition from walking on a planet, jumping into a spaceship to zipping around in outer space and back to another planet.

The hype somehow morphed into "EVERYTHING: THE GAME" according the dumbass Sony stans and people on reddit.  There isn't a main campaign or even a story.  There aren't robust dialogue trees or romance options.  Base building was never in the game and this isn't like Civilization: Beyond Earth where you're creating space colonies.  It isn't an MMO and it doesn't have PvP or co-op.  It isn't even really a space sim like Elite.  It is a Make Your Own Space Adventure via exploring frontier planets and star systems.  And try not to die along the way.  That is the entire hook-seeing another planet in the sky and knowing it isn't just a flat background on a skybox but that you can actually go there to look around, likely to explore a planet no one else has ever seen or will ever see.  The universe in No Man's Sky isn't technically infinite, but for all intents and purposes is it essentially endless exploration.  That is what makes the game interesting.

Will No Man's Sky be engaging for more than a few hours?  Will the procedural generation be varied enough to keep things interesting?  Fuck if I know.  It might end up with a 65 on Metacritic and pretty grindy, but unlike the unhinged fanbase I do have a clear understanding of what the game is and why I'm buying it.   The other side of the fence is ravenous to see the game fail.  I just want to fly around in space and enjoy my synth playlist.
