The final season got thrown together as a final season that's why it suddenly halfway through turns into stuff you'd expect from the Final Season with her visit and Randy leaving and stuff and the finale is garbage and isn't anyone from the shows past.

Also I couldn't care about Trudy anymore because she had become Jan to me in the intervening years.

It's not, IIRC the writers confirmed it's an Easter Egg. Similar to other shows that have done it on USA (Mr. Robot with the "Characters Welcome"/flipping the script lines).
