I up and finally pulled the trigger on one of these things.  Found the AC Edition online, and I had old paypal funds I completely forgot about, so I dumped it on this and the Animal Crossing game.   I'm a bit excited, but a bit weary, as the thought of starting a new library of games when I have the greatest backlog I've ever had still elsewhere.  ...and the thought of prices for games on this thing are absurd as well.  ...maybe that's a good thing, as it will help prevent me from getting too much.  :doge

Like, BOTW for example... Still selling at $50?!

I recommend you don't stay all-digital with this system and get carts, too- some better deals can be found.

EDIT: I see you said elsewhere it's for your daughter.  Makes sense.

Yeah, for now... I think the 2 games I definitely want to get my hands on personally, are Mario Odyssey and Link's Awakening.

Now, the waiting game for the Zelda 35th Anniversary Direct to drop. :doggy

Set up some price notifications with slick deals. All the big Nintendo games are put on sale at 40 every few months at Target or Walmart.

Another good JRPG on Switch
 :lawd

Been playing Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin, along with 3D World. After playing a fuck ton of 3D Mario the past year, 3D World is absolutely the most fun I've had with Mario in general. Best level design and pacing of any platformer.

Tempted to pick up BD2 but I want to finish BD1 first, and maybe play BD Second. Also no way I'd get to this before MH Rise is out in a month, so buying it at $60 when it'll be $30-40 in a couple months when I actually have time to play it is dumb.

Then again, pandemic boredom = oooh new rpg buy endorphins yayyy and then play an hour and shelve it. Trying to stay strong and save that $20-30.

Yeah, The World Ends With You Switch port is still full price on Amazon. It and BD2 were published by Nintendo WW, so it may not really get discounted. This isn't Final Fantasy.

Ordered BD2 because I had some coupons/credits expiring from BB. I've never played the first two games, but that review sold me. Plus physical copies of rpgs for the Switch seem to disappear within a year (Octopath & XB2).

Downloaded the demo for FFCC Remastered, big mistake, I'm almost certainly going to be shelling out $30 for the full version when I hit the demo limits. 😬 The demo is essentially the full game including online, just with some minor limits, and you can transfer your save to the full version later if you want.

I know the gameplay isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it is much more basic than the two DS games (Ring of Fates and especially Echoes of Time) that vastly improved on the formula, and the online is region-segmented and likely dead now, but... nostalgia is a hell of a drug. :P And the presentation still holds up.

If anyone else has it and wants to play online before MH Rise takes over my life at the end of March, let me know! :D

Nice!

I also just learned only the host needs to have bought the full version, everyone else can be a free/"Lite" player. :o And even if it's region limited, PS4 + Switch + iOS + Android cross-play is pretty cool.

Bravery Default 2 is pretty awesome and addictive. The writing is good, the story itself has been a bit generic, but the music and gameplay are excellent.

Having the ability to jack up battle speed and repeat your last turn makes grinding next to painless. I've basically done all the prologue stuff, about to head where the demo takes place, but I've found a very efficient way to master jobs quickly.

The Freelancer job has two JP passives (Jobber points) , it ups the JP you get by x1.7. Combine that with using lure to trigger consecutive battles with specific families of monsters, you're looking at 500 JP for a juicy battle.

You can also use the boat to passively collect job experience orbs while you're not playing the game. I'm spending them to unlock the JP boost abilities. Hopefully that will help out reducing the playtime from 60 to 40 hours.

Overall it's pretty good. Poor story, good combat.

The story seems even worse in this game compared to the first BD. At least there the characters were charming and had some conflict between them that was fun to follow. Here everyone is so buddy buddy right from the get-go and it's pretty boring.

Also, games are miracles that they even happen, somehow you get all this talent and resources together and you create something............so generic. Why? I mean I guess that's the point of BD, to be a throwback. But I think I'm tired of generic whatever fantasy in Japanese RPGS. They all feel the same. Here's the desert Arabian place...Here's the European castle place.. and so on. These aren't interesting worlds to learn about.

I don't know it's ok.

Indeed. I'm maybe 4 hours in and all characters are a lot more bland compared to the first two Bravely Defaults. That being said it's still a lot better written than e.g. Alliance Alive or I am Setsuna.

Was considering getting an good ol JRPG on this thing.  Is there one that's a must have/play one on the Switch that you all recommend?  I've kinda narrowed down between DQXI and Xenoblade Chronicles.  Never played DQXI, and only played a portion of XB.  Is there any other one's y'all would recommend over those? Is Octopath Traveler better?

It's difficult to make recommendations without knowing your preferences. I don't consider any game on the Switch a must play even though it's a fantastic system.

I haven't enjoyed any of the Xenoblade games. I also didn't enjoy Final Fantasy XII which uses a similar combat system.

Dragon Quest XI is possibly the best game in the series. If you enjoy traditional JRPGs then that's your best bet.

I really enjoyed Octopath Traveler, but ended up dropping it towards the end.

I took a brief look at some "best RPGs for the Switch" articles. Many list games like The Witcher 3 and Divinity: Original Sin that I would much rather play on PC.

See, I completely forgot about FFXII on here.. Another game I only played a portion of, but dropped for some reason I can't remember back then.  And I didn't know Divinity was on here either.   :thinking
I'm down for almost anything turn based, or pseudo turn based (like FFXI & XB).  I think my current thought process is something shorter, but I'm totally in the wrong genre for shortness.  :-[
Why can't RPG's just be shorter like Suikoden 1 and Chrono Trigger? :-\   I'm just putting out feelers.. I'm probably never going to find time to actually complete one, but it'd be nice to at least have something to have on the side.  Octopath looks amazing, guess I'm wondering if the story (stories?) will keep my interest.

If you enjoy older RPGs then there are plenty to choose from on the Switch. There are collections for the Mana and SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend) series, SNK 40th anniversary collection, a Mega Drive collection, the Final Fantasy games from PS1 and PS2, an improved version of Phantasy Star, etc. If you pay for Nintendo Online you also have some RPGs in the NES and SNES collections, e.g. Breath of Fire.

Many classic RPGs are missing, but if you want to feel nostalgic for a few hours then there are many alternatives.

I'd definitely put it in like top20-ish. Maybe would make the top10. In the last 15 years or whatever since it came out? Probably top5. Not a lot of great jrpgs in the last two decades.

XC2's way better. Hate the lame corny characters in XC1.

Yeah, I can't see this even if you don't like XC1.

Like maybe the battle system in XC2 is better. I never really liked XC2's battle system, so I wouldn't even give it that, but a lot of people really like XC2's combat. But like the field exploration is way worse, no contest. All that field skill gating bullshit? Gatcha pulls? Sidequests hidden behind gatch pulls and grinding dozens of different blades? Yeah, the field in XC2 look nice, but the field gameplay is mobile tedious shit. Even has a mobile mercenaries mode. XC1 fields are just straight up exploring, fighting and finding loot.

And the story is so much worse in XC2, the cast is a bunch of crappy lolis, the music is generally worse outside some locations. Basically XC2 is just prettier, has more lolis & tits, and a more flashy combat system.

Also XC2 barely has any mechs so it loses a ton there. XC1 has giant dead gods and awesome mecha shit. Also adult characters and a compelling story with twists and turns.

I think Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the worst game that Takahashi's directed. Xenosaga ep2 is worse but he didn't direct that iirc.

Xenoblade 2 is dogshit. They really wanted you to grind out lootboxes for weapons in a full price, single player offline game. What the fuck? I think I ended up with about 10 rare blades and pages and pages of the ugly generic ones. And I didn't even like the designs of the ones I did unlock. It really just makes the whole process of getting weapons miserable.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I’ve answered so many questions like this so forgive me if I come across as a dick, but there seems to be a lot of people like yourself out there, maybe I can liberate your mind from the prison it’s in, Respectfully speaking here. Who are you to judge how someone entertains themselves? Especially if it makes them happy?

I’ve only ever ran into this problem with women, all whom have a horrible outlook on men who game, this post isn’t about just women here either, this is purely from my experiences and not all women think this way. This isn’t a post to bash women, and lots of other people think this way too, especially parents, but I’ll get to that later.

My partner watches nothing but soap operas or reality tv. I personally feel like it’s garbage tv or a waste of time, but it makes her happy and it entertains her, who am I to judge? Could you imagine for a minute that I would say to her to stop watching that stuff, and tell her that it’s a waste of time, or that she needs to grow up? Do you see how horrible of a mindset that is? Not only is it controlling but disrespectful. I’ve come across a few women in my time that tried making me feel bad about my hobby and I told them to kick rocks. It’s a giant red flag when someone takes offence to how one chooses to entertain themselves, especially if it’s not hurting nobody and most importantly, it makes them feel happy.

I’m a 42 year old man who grew up with video games. Obviously I don’t get to play as often as my 7 year old Nintendo days due to life responsibilities, but I still manage to game for about 3–5 hours a day, and Sunday being my true gaming day. It’s no different than a man coming home after a hard days work and watching tv or a sports game.

Most men my age are out of shape, drink, smoke, are never home, or have serious problems with their wives. I’m in shape, don’t drink, don’t do drugs, and am a bit of a homebody. This is me not gaming and enjoying nice weather being physically active staying lean with weight.

My current girlfriend loves it because she always knows where I am, and her last boyfriend was never around and she never knew where he was. So what did she do? Well, not only has she not trashed my hobby, but she bought a Nintendo Switch and games with me. Her and I beat Super Mario Oddessy together, and I bought her Zelda Breath of the Wild for the Switch and we beat it together, I was in my man cave and she was in her living room and we were both playing it at the same time, often comparing notes and helping eachother with secret shrines and puzzles. This is a woman who works for the RCMP and has never played an RPG in her whole life. I’m talking about hundreds of hours played together. Now we’re playing Fortnite almost every night as duos getting Victory Royale’s.

In my opinion video games are no different than watching tv or movies, and I feel like they’re even better because you get to interact personally with them. We all literally have one life to live here on this small rock flying through space, and do you really think I’m going to let one persons judgement on my video gaming as a man get in my way? Hell no.. Remember, Nintendo kids had to grow up and become adults too, and there’s no little switch that turns off because of your age.

Below is a picture of me winning 2nd place in a Street Fighter 5 Tournament, this was the Cineplex WorldGaming Canadian Championships sponsored by Cineplex Movie Theatres. I got 2nd place dude, I was 38 and guess what,? Nobody seen me coming… Well, maybe except for maybe the 1st place guy. Nobody there knew I grew up playing fighting games in arcades with quarters. These fighting games I used to play in arcades just simply transitioned to home console gaming. This tournament was meant for me. I was a statistical anomaly. Because I wasn’t playing for money I gave all of my winnings to the last place player to share it however he saw fit, the younger kids need the money, I work full time for a living. Video games, they did this. This is memory I’ll cherish forever.

The beauty of video games is there is no barriers, no age limits, no gender limits, and it brings people together. The social aspect of video games are literally insane, especially with a huge focus towards online multiplayer games. One of my best friends is someone I met playing Call of Duty back in 2007. He recently got married and I was his best man down in Atlanta,Georgia. I’m Canadian so this was quite an experience for me, video games did that.

If you think Zelda is for kids and a waste of time then that’s your opinion, but it sounds to me like a brainwashed opinion that was influenced by a negative person or people you met in society. I’ll be gaming when I’m in an old age home and die a happy man. The most important thing in my life these days is self happiness and peace of mind, I have both of them. Maybe you need to find something that makes you happy and not focus so much what makes others happy. That mentality is toxic.

There’s plenty of other things people do to fill their time that’s childish, bad for you health, or waste of time. Adults can spend a lifetime at dead end job that’s a waste of time all while becoming miserable and depressed. With your mindset, what’s next? Are you going to say that adults that watch Cartoon Disney movies are being immature? New Star Wars stuff is coming out like the Mandelorian, it’s causing adults who were raised in the 80’s with Star Wars to cry with tears of joy.

Is them watching that stuff childish or a waste of time? Like I said before, your mindset is holding you back and you need to evolve a bit.

Any Zelda game I’ve played is like reading a mythical novel, but you’re the main protagonist and it’s your story to play. Have you ever truly played a Zelda game? Besides the gameplay, the music is soothing, the quests give you a sense of accomplishment and pride, and the puzzles encourage you to use your brain. There is no movie or tv show on the planet earth that can allow me to do and feel what I’ve mentioned above. It sounds to me like you need to take a weeks holiday off of work and lose yourself in a Zelda game for awhile, maybe you’ll get it. Here’s a list of a few to try out, I could give you some retro ones, but since you’re a non believer I’ll give you some more modern ones that may change your mind.. In no particular order.

-Legend of Zelda:Wind Waker-Nintendo WiiU

-Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess -WiiU

-Zelda Breath of the Wild-Nintendo Switch

-Zelda- Links Awakening-Nintendo Switch

Remember friend…There’s worse things out in the world that people can be doing than video games. And for any kids reading this, show this post and photo below to your parents to further prove my point. ⬇️

Haters gonna hate. :trumps

I mean I wish I could understand why people like XB2. People with similar taste of me like it, but I just have never been so confused by a game’s praise. Like it’s just everything I hate about JRPGs and nothing I liked about Xeno ganes.

I liked the music in Churchland. The story was entertaining even if I didn't think it was particularly good. Unfortunately the grind check spots killed any sort of pacing to the story, otherwise you could at least just run through the main story and enjoy it as anime action movie.

And the ending stuff was ok. I feel like the interesting story stuff is too distant and hands off vs Xenosaga or something where that kind of stuff is a bigger deal. I feel like XBX franchise will handle those kind of story beats better if they ever get there.

The environments throughout the whole game were really pretty to explore when not dealing with field checks. I liked when you went into the cloud fish place in the sky.
