Hm, when I looked it up it said governor appointment until next statewide election (which would be 2022, when Harris' term would end anyways).

Becerra was number 4 or 5 in the Dem leadership when he was in the House so I figure he's got friends.

cf. the last line of Elections Code Section 10720.

There's a law in the state legislature right now that would repeal that part of the Code and make the law for U.S. Senate conform to the law for other state offices (that the special election is mandatory and must be held within a specific period of time). I don't care about the civics geek stuff so I can't tell you if it's likely to get sped through before November now.

I don't know, you might have Gavin Newsom appoint somebody mildly more progressive than Harris is, and in a special election, it'll be a bit of a free for all.

That's why Newsom could just appoint Tom Steyer to the senate in 2021.

I think she's an ambitious mainstream Democrat who sees things through a pretty standard center-left frame, and as certain ideas and policies become more popular within the party they will hold more sway with her. I think this explains both those parts of her career.

For a long time, almost every black politician that won an election outside a majority-black district had a background as a prosecutor or AG. Douglas Wilder was maybe the only exception until Obama.
