For example, California passes a lot of stuff that it cannot afford primarily as a virtue signal. So I'm listening to the Foreign Policy / Editor's Roundtable podcast. It's interesting but man oh man, it is amazing just how hawkish the consensus seems to be among foreign policy specialists. They rail against Trump's positions, which is to be expected, but they're also very negative about Obama. Not that I think that he has a perfect record (the whole "red line" thing was a major blunder), but the podcast contributors across the partisan divide seem to believe there's really no problem that can't be fixed by heavy US military involvement. For one it sells short the still massive US effort permanently ongoing (half of the campaigns "led by allies" in the Middle East and Africa probably wouldn't happen without it) and their subdued and discrete involvement (special forces, military "trainers"), as if anything else that US sending tens of thousands of fresh meat sticks anywhere was a road to isolationism.

It's a nice thing to see US force as a potential force for good in the world but roasting at the same time Obama for not coddling enough Sunni allies is a bit of underlying ambivalence you have to adress at one point. In the same vein, it's all fine and good to get all heated about Syria but I can't help but notice that there's very little talk about the Libya shitshow aftermath as a textbook example of how it's easier to break a vase than fix it.

In a way, the constant negativity is not that far removed from some of the Trumpism chant of "We are losing everywhere". It all has an air of self persuasion of an American decadence

Also lamenting at the insolvency of a liberal morally enlightened lawful world order advantageous to the USA when it is the same country that was willing to override or put the brakes on institutions trying to make this more of a reality everytime it might tie their hands...

This has quickly become my favorite podcast. I love the things Rothkopf will say about PEOTUS publicly. When he said Trump "doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about" I almost crashed my car laughing. I agree that Hisham Melhem's monologue about American global leadership "warts and all" was hard to swallow, but I think the podcast does a good job balancing perspectives. Kori Schake for example worked on the McCain campaign and David Sanger—whom, if you'll allow me to pointlessly interject, I've met—has long warned against some of Obama's military adventurism.

In one the earlier ones they did discuss Libya compared to Iraq and Syria and it was very interesting.

How everyone kept repeating the implied American failure of 470,000 dead Syrians (presumably because we didn't intervene) is something that I don't find particularly helpful, though. What is the alternative? At least half that were killed in the Iraq war and we did intervene there. I don't think you can blame the US on Syria because I have a hard time imagining any situation where that doesn't go sideways.

I like the podcast, mind, and I find most of the contributors insightful. But as I said, from an outsider's perspective, it highlights some of the assumptions that seem prevalent in US foreign policy circles.

The only time it's really gone off the rails was the episode they did on worst case scenarios were everyone rolled out their crackpot theory of choice. Iirc, rothkopfs position on syria was: set up humanitarian safe zones within the country, nominal ground force, institute no fly zone. Russia entering signaled the us losing initiative and indicated any effort they made was too little too late. He's dismissive of the air support nato (read: us) has been reponsible for, something like "the bombing campaigns haven't affected IS much" which I'm not sure I agree with.

Mostly though I find the podcast clearheaded. In the weeks running up to the election they never considered a trump victory, so I'm curious to see what the conversations been like since then.

This morning CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota hosted a panel discussion with five Trump supporters, who calmly explained to her that evidence of voter fraud was everywhere “in the media” and could be found on Google or Facebook if she was willing to look. It’s a fascinating albeit sobering look at the thought processes that led to Trump’s election.

The segment was a follow-up to an earlier panel held before election day, and focused mostly on Trump’s new appointees and allegations of voter fraud. But far more interesting were the panelists’ comments about “the media,” which they repeatedly referred to as some sort of collective entity, indistinguishable from outlet to outlet.

“Voting is a privilege in this country and you need to be legal, not like California where three million illegals voted,” one panelist named Paula asserted about four minutes into the segment. When Camerota asked her to cite her sources, she said she saw it in “the media—some of it was CNN,” before admitting she didn’t know where she saw it.

“It was coming all across the media. All across,” she said. “If CNN didn’t do it, then they were being smart this time.”

Another panelist told Camerota she heard with her own ears President Obama tell people they could vote even if they were in the country illegally.

Camerota: Did you hear President Obama say illegal people could vote?

Panelist: Yes.

Camerota: Tell me where?

Panelist: On uh, you can find it—Google it. You can find it on Facebook.

The report, it turned out, was a debunked Fox Business Network clip that had been deceptively edited, which a look at the transcript would have immediately made clear.

The whole segment is worth a watch. The panelists also explain they don’t care if the wall actually gets built because they trust Trump will keep “the illegals” out, and blame the rise of white supremacists on the media.

“That’s been around forever. If you keep reporting on it, it’s going to grow like a cancer,” Paula said. “If you forget about it, it’s probably going to go away. The media has to hop on everything and it’s wrong.”

The only thing more notable than watching a panel of people realize they don’t know whether or not something is true is watching a panel of people realize they don’t particularly care, because it feels true enough.

To continue on FP : ER, I'm currently listening to the "We fail better" episode and it does adress some of the issue with the US armed forces, core assumptions and the strategy.
