Honest question since I haven't followed the controversy like at all:
Has that dev guy ever said something about trans people? Or was everything on the level of "stuff relatives on facebook share that you roll your eyes at"?
Heres what I can tell has happened. I also haven't paid super attention.
He doubled down on the decision to not have poc in his game. I guess when questioned on it he pushed the idea that since this is his culture he knows better. And you know what? Who cares? At most I saw people reaching for the argument that a poc could be there. In the end, him and his team set out to make a game reflective of thier cultural identity. Big whoop. What is the problem that this passion and personal project did not insert characters for the sake of diversity? History itself is bias. I'm not going to get mad at someone because they refuse to acknowledge something that seems at best arguable. Varva's main problem I guess was that he refused to do that.
Then as you can understand he sided with gamergate. But honestly it dosent seem to be because of alt right attitudes. He seems to be against censorship hardcore. No surprise seeing where he's from. He seemed to be for gamergate because of its ideas of being against things that try to impose ideas on creators. Which fine. Why I no doubt a lot of people's gamergate shit is a mask for "I don't want my games to change" but there are a lot of creators who were sympathetic to it because they agreed. They didn't like being told to change thier creative vision in the service of overbearing social progressivism. Are they right or wrong? I don't know, but it is an argument to be made and one I can see Varva arguing with. Seeing as his games creative vision is being attacked.
Then he had some bad things to say about Anita S. I don't agree with what he said, but then again I don't agree or care about her. Did they seem a little petty? Sure but the game seems like someone who trolls in exaggerated ways to mock arguments he's against. He did it with the shirt and the image meme with his wife. Again his problem seems to be with people telling him what to do.
The one questionable thing I saw is the twitter post about how the German government treats Arabic imigriants and it's own citizens. But I don't know the issue and while I wouldn't be surprised if he holds some views I don't share. I also know the race and political views are grey and complex. Simply having a view dosent make someone a Nazi. Guess what? My mother made comments about how the US Gov treated Mexican immigrants over American citizens. Is she a nazi? No. Does she have some views that one can argue against? Yes. But she's super liberal and hates trump.
I'm not saying the guy isn't an asshole maybe. I just don't think he's some nazi and the game something that comes from a bad place. It's a controversy over nothing.
