Generally speaking all the Simpsons characters are kind of crap people. It was that whole late 80s/early 90s trend of non-perfect/kinda bad characters becoming all the rage ... ie: Married With Children, Seinfeld, Roseanne, I guess even Melrose Place, etc. "Bad people who are kinda lovable" that whole thing.

What is it you think you see exactly that so starkly deviates from that? 

Because the narrative of the deserving/undeserving poor(which I would include many culture war items) is a very pronounced theme in Republican economic rhetoric, as is the narrative that what is good for CEO's/corporations is good for you and the economy. Which are amongst the cornerstone rationales from which trickle down, yellow socialism/hollow state, and blindly cutting regulation is built upon.

In the recent discussions regarding Kratos in God of War, as well as the shift of the series' narrative focus and the aspect of continuing Kratos' story instead of making a clean break with a new character, the other games that came to mind were the new Doom and the new Wolfensteins.

Doom takes the relentless unstoppable action of the past games and makes those skillful actions of the player a story element, by presenting your Marine as a force so powerful and ruthless and unstoppable that even demons fear and worship you. There's some narrative stuff for why, but really for the player, it comes across as this meta acknowledgement that feels very satisfying with the context of the new Doom

The new Wolfenstein games look at the action of the previous games and ask “You know that over-the-top musclebound killing machine of an old-school FPS protagonist? What if he was like an actual character, how would that role and leadership position and that experience affect him”. And this reflection on the nature of that kind of protagonist, along with the writing and Brian Bloom's acting, helped make Blazkowicz a compelling and memorable character

With new God of War, the consensus from reviews seems to be that not only did the devs evolve Kratos as a character without betraying what he was in those games, the narrative tackles his past sins and monstrous actions and gory slaughtering, action we're so familiar with because we witnessed and performed those acts, as a central thematic foundation of the story and his relationship with Atreus and reflects upon them. The baggage of those past games, of Kratos' characterization from past games, is what makes this promise of new game so interesting.

Like that juxtaposition alone, that former and latter is the same person, offers so much story potential
