You can't stop ideas by saying "stop having that idea" and you don't stop people communicating ideas by saying "don't talk about that idea".
Stick Galileo in a cell and force him to recant all you fucking want, his ideas persist, and yet it moves.
Conflating a falsifiable scientific claim with, say, Ben Shapiro's opinions that are sometimes rooted in his having an imaginary friend seems a bit dishonest.
But the action to try and stifle the idea remains the same; by this authority I declare this idea false and forbid its discussion.
Bad ideas are dismantled through exposure to better ideas, not by stifling their expression.
And the point I was making that stifling an idea does almost nothing to stop its propagation, and even less to its existence in peoples minds.
We live in an era in which the common (1st world) person is connected to a device out of necessity, of which social media and the internet plays a large role in one’s life.
By design people are thrown into sites without much moderation or regulation, which—whatever, with a constant stream of information specifically tailored to manipulate and influence with largely refined, proven strategies.
It’s not a new concept, but waves of news/information are constantly melted down to base levels and thrust upon these devices, and by design people are led into separate sources of information/news/advertising/media and with increased presence throughout time.
Without any oversight, blatant lies are propagated throughout society, and they are further pushed into a connected circle that connects to other niche related groups, while remaining hyper isolated from content that would drive them away.
These bite sized lies and insane beliefs (antivax/flat earth/climate) show real world consequence and there’s a monetary benefit to all parties involved to keep this system going.
Those with vested interests that understand these algorithms and want to game the system are well encouraged to do so as they further feed the social circle with LCD content that can be easily spread and engaged with.
It’s no wonder that disingenuous (not read “ignorant” or “ side I disagree with” ) people like Ben Shapiro can just make up facts or anecdotes with no consequence or risk. He even guest starred in one of PewDiePie’s videos for the “meme” and not at all for any other reason. He’s just degrading himself in front of an impressionable audience because it’s funny, and totally not because of the direct/indirect pulls towards Conservative content on all your social medias.
Take a look at Anti-Vax material, despite bringing back diseases previously eradicated, Anti-Vax material isn’t just “existing” across the internet, but it’s thriving.
There’s a problem with how blatant misinformation is irresponsibly handled, and no amount of open debate will cure hyperisolated bubbles that are infesting our society and setting us back hundreds of years.
I’m not saying “removing Ben Shapiro from the internet is great”, but at some point a solution needs to be made so as to prevent some extremely dangerous ideas proliferate among sizable portions of the population that can enact change, but are not necessarily easy to connect to.
in the current, digitized world. trivial information is accumulating every second, preserved in all its triteness. Never fading, always accessible. Rumors about petty issues, misinterpretations, slander...All this junk data preserved in an unfiltered state, growing at an alarming rate. lt will only slow down social progress, reduce the rate of evolution. You seem to think that our plan is one of censorship. What we propose to do is not to control content, but to create context. The digital society furthers human flaws and selectively rewards development of convenient half-truths.
Just look at the strange juxtapositions of morality around you.
Billions spent on new weapons in order to humanely murder other humans.
Rights of criminals are given more respect than the privacy of their victims.
Although there are people suffering in poverty, huge donations are made to protect endangered species.
Everyone grows up being told the same thing. Be nice to other people... But beat out the competition!
"You're special. Believe in yourself and you will succeed." But it's obvious from the start that only a few can succeed...
You exercise your right to 'freedom' and this is the result. All rhetoric to avoid conflict and protect each other from hurt. The untested truths spun by different interests to churn and accumulate in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. Everyone withdraws into their own small gated community, afraid of a larger forum.
They stay inside their little ponds leaking whatever "truth" suits them into the growing cesspool of society at large.
The different cardinal truths neither clash nor mesh. No one is invalidated, but nobody is right.Not even natural selection can take place here. The world is being engulfed in "truth".
And this is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.
We‘re trying to stop that from happening. It's our responsibility as rulers. Just as in genetics, unnecessary information and memory must be filtered out to stimulate the evolution of the species. Who else could wade through the sea of garbage you people produce, retrieve valuable truths and even interpret their meaning for later generations?
