Linux Gaming chances died when Steam OS released like a wet fart.

It's actually gotten better with proton and DXVK. Before that Linux gaming was wayyyyyy worse than it currently is.

Like: I installed Magic: Arena (a Windows only application) on Debian 9. Which utterly amazes me.

With Easy Anti-cheat being thrown a wrench into the gears by Epic, this means a bunch of titles like PUBG, Paladins, and others no longer will work even under Proton.

Anyway, this is a round-about way of saying "yeah, but Valve is doing good work on making that actually change and give Steam-boxes a second lease on life. While Epic is being doo-doo heads."

IIRC that was because DOS could only address 1MB of RAM. So you probably still wouldn’t be able to boot Commander Keen today without tweaking your config.sys. 

My memory is very fuzzy but it was in dos 6.2.2 and I had to use himem sys and something else to get a couple of games that needed 8MB to load on my 4MB machine. They ran like shit but they ran.

Btw I still remember to this day, 23 years ago, when a friend came over to install and play a game that was too resource heavy for my computer. The shame was so great that I have pledged to never provide my children with low spec equipment.

Linux gaming as an analogy to moving to canada is actually pretty good if you're from the US.

I had an Aztek sound card in the piece of shit Packard Bell tower that cost me like $2000 at the time, trying to get the sound to work in Duke 3D was a fucking process every time I booted it up.  I somehow was able to trick it into thinking I was using a SoundBlaster, but that took about 2 weeks of tinkering to do.  Fucking pain in the ass.
