The Outer Worlds is basically the kind of RPG I had given up hope of ever happening again, happening again, done to perfection. This is the kind of game I would willingly drop $60 on, multiple times, the kind of game I will lose hundreds of hours of my life to over the next few years. It’s a game of the generation contender, basically. And I got to play it on day one, without having to purchase it, legally.

Game Pass has had multiple GoTG caliber games in its catalog, of course, there’s Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter World, Hellblade, Ori, Life is Strange, Hitman, and so on. But unless you like MS games, you’ve had to wait for those games to hit Game Pass, which has at least been a few months after launch, if not more.

But this game, this marvellous and wonderful masterpiece, is available, day one. No strings attached.

I know a lot of people on Era like to argue against Game Pass on the basis of “devaluation of games” or “how will MS make money” or some other bullshit, but I am neither an industry analyst nor a stockholder and those things mean nothing to me. As a customer, I just got delivered an incredible, GOTG-level game, without having to drop $60 on it, on day one.

That’s value. Game Pass is king, and is enough for me, who has always prioritized PlayStation as my primary console, leaving other stuff just for exclusives, to want to prioritize Xbox next generation.

Then I say, you aren't allowed to bitch later, when those kind of games aren't made anymore, sorry sunshine, you don't get both.

The shit is going to hit the fan when the reality of these kinds of games development costs, catch up with the economics of everyone only paying $10s a month divided over 10,000 games. Indie/Single player games either wont get made, or have to be heavily subsidized by whatever walled garden gatekeeper they are currently a slave for, or be riddled with MTX, Stamina Potions, Battle Pass bullshit to make back its cost. Can't wait for Stardew Valley 2 to come out monetized like the next Farmville! And if you think it won't happen, Plants vs Zombies 1 -> Plants Vs Zombies 2.

I see this immediate sub based future kind of like the best of both words, you're getting games that were made with the old way of getting money in mind (Gears 5, Outer Worlds, etc) delivered on the loss leading, less revenue sub method, so its like too good to be true (hint: it is). So I guess just enjoy while it lasts. Ever wondered what a single player game would look like bloated up huge in order to bring in more revenue based on a payment for time played revenue system? Don't worry, you wont have to wonder much longer!

If the collapse is finely tuned to line up with the dissolution of society due to the climate change apocalypse, it's all peachy.

Im still rocking my i5 2500k, I was gonna get a ryzen 3900x (I set aside $2500 for a new pc build), but now I think I can wait till next year and the next ryzen/nvidia cards that come after/near cyberpunks launch.

That's also not really how it's working right now;  MS is paying developers based on the value of their games, not based on some split of revenue.  They aren't even measuring how much a game is played and then paying, they make a deal ahead of time (just like how Netflix brokers content.) 

Playing the game more just means that dev might get a better deal next time, if a game flops on GamePass MS is less likely to buy another timed GamePass license next time around, etc.

Eh that was a bit of an exaggeration but I still feel like even a couple hundred games on a sub service for 10 isn't going to get the devs (the big devs) the revenue they used to get, then again those devs are already ruining their games with monetization without the sub service. It just feels like the game industry became a pile of shit in the last 10 years. And up till now, you could avoid it going indie games (where most games are pay once, and you get what is advertised on the tin), but now with subs even indies will be enticed to add mtx. I just see an industry that went from lol aw horse armor to nba2k20. Thats why I just assume streaming and/or subs will be the future eventually, modding will be dead, local compute will be outlawed by the megacorps, and youll have at least 20 streaming services by every publisher independent of one another for their own IPs

Those indie games are the easy to buy platform enhancers;  I don't think they are going anywhere or will be needing MTX.

The likes of MS can afford to buy those games for GamePass to get people on their platform to then hopefully turn around and play the latest GAAS MTX grinders.

I'm just a pessimistic dude and its a race to the bottom now. Mobile gaming was ruined by it, now we are training everyone to expect everything for a dollar a month. Enjoy it while it lasts I guess. If gaming goes subs only I see "Triple A" being very rare type games, and most everything else becoming a "Netflix Original" tier type game, nothing stellar, but "good enough". I guess if it means we get less, but more funded indie games a year that wouldn't be terrible. As it stands now we are getting WAAAAY to much supply for their demand. I feel for the developers in all this though. Its gotta be scary watching the general public demand your work be practically worthless, but then also expect even better and better games in the future.

These tourists are only there for the desire to stave off FOMO by partaking in a meme from a comic book movie. It's only a few steps above poverty tourism.

To reverse the situation by trying to make me less sympathetic to the locals by saying "what if it were rich people saying this is theirs?" is patently ridiculous because it ignores the inherent power dynamics and historical contexts that have defined the interactions and stereotypes between the rich and poor. I mean, hell, you think rich people already don't think people like these locals are of any worth beyond what little purchasing power and labor they can squeeze from them? Look at our President.
