Controversial opinion - Alan Wake was a pretty crappy shooter. Long stretches of level without enemies boring walking sim basically, barely any enemy types, combat options.

I like (but don't love) Alan Wake because the story was interesting, the setting was Twin Peaks, and the visuals were great, but the gameplay-side was pretty bad imo. I can't even tell Control is made by the same people because it's such a far leap of improvement in gameplay. I never played American Nightmare since it seemed more combat focused and yeah I didn't like the combat in AW.

Will play Quantum Break at some point since it seems sorta in the middle between AW -> Control gameplay improvements and I'm interested in the FMV story stuff.

I agree, and i'm not suprised they came up with Alan Wake's gameplay in a rush after their open world plans failed.
Control is a much better working shooter, especially once you unlock advanced powers like levitate.

Control is a better shooter than all of those.

Tried out Battletoads. Seemed terrible so uninstalled it. Why put unskippable cutscenes in a game like this, especially all the story stuff is terrible. Also I felt like I was missing something about the combat because those guarding enemies seemed to kill the flow since the only way I could break their guard seemed to be to just stand in front of them and charge for a second and let go.

lol, I haven't played Ghost but at least it's a little less appalling since I'm assuming it's a cinematic story AAA game.

Battletoads is a fucking arcade game and having to constantly stop the level to watch a bunch of cringe cutscenes is like game breakingly bad. Arcade games are meant for replays, who wants to keep watching this stuff on replays?

Cracked out three 1000s real quick over the weekend. Each of these are at most a few hours to complete (even for 1000)

- Observation

Cool atmospheric adventure. Sphere controls were awful. Used this guide for the collectables + missable achievements. Easy 1000 if you follow the guide for the collectables + missables

- Carrion

I liked the idea behind this, cool game. No map is butt cheeks, but you really only need a map to go back to get the rest of the upgrades (which arent at all required to beat the game). No final boss or anything so just enjoy the ride. Easy 1000 its all story achievements + the 9 upgrades

- The Touryst

Simple clean fun. Was funny reading how people hated the arcade games but I cranked them out real quick. You dont really need a guide for this one, the game is very straight forward. Easy 1000

Crossing Souls seemed solid but I read some reviews and it sounds like it gets really really bad towards in the back half so will skip.
Not gonna play Spiritfarer because I played the demo and it looked nice and charming but was kinda slow & boring and I hear it's like 30 hours long.
Undermine seems solid if you're in the mood for another rogue.

Pretty neat game, starts out as a Ninja Gaiden then it branches off into this simple version of a Metroidvania (you get hints / can even buy direct hints).

Then I saw that the DLC is actually free - and comes with achievements. So I finished that up too

Pretty easy 1250 aside from one achievement in the DLC that took me a few tries to get

I actually had first real problem with windows game store last night trying to give Crusader Kings a try and it somehow broke my Xbox app and store...wouldn't let me run anything as admin or download anything. the solutions to this I found online were pretty lol (I had to reinstall windows!  ) so if anyone ever runs into issue:

Start > Run shell:AppsFolder to get to the dumb hidden app folder
pin Xbox to taskbar
hold shift+ctrl and click to run in admin mode
hit install on gamepass page, but before running first time right click on icon and create desktop shortcut.
right click that to run as admin and should at least bring up the launcher, which worked for me at that point no issues.

Xbox App is a little sketchy but will forever be a million times better than when GamePass made you use the Windows Store. Every time I wanted to download a game I had to google an error message to let me select another HDD

I think they are still linked though, app is just kind of a workaround? when I was looking for a fix a lot of people went the route of forcing through the store but that didn't solve app lockout issue.

Damn. That's nuts.

My biggest problem is that the d-pad doesn't work right on my DS4 in some games (diagonals don't register making some games unplayable) and some issues with exclusive fullscreen. The d-pad one is pretty bad though. Every time there's a 2d game on the service it's a 50/50 crapshoot on whether it'll even be playable because of it.
