I mean compared to a normal business, sure..  but that kind of traffic requires a somewhat competent backend.   Tech cost to run the site wouldn't be massive but either are ad revenues unless you also know what you are doing there.  So even a moderate cost can cut into revenues as we aren't talking THAT MUCH revenue.

Costs are comparatively small anymore for hosting a forum, you just hire a decent host and it's all taken care of without any human intervention needed. He's in the high five to low six figures range pretty easily using the known data. If he wasn't already rich he'd still not have to work. I think the napkin calculation Null of KiwiFarms made for people was a bit high, and like you mentioned their SEO is actually pretty shit, but it's still a pretty easily acquired chunk of change. Especially since Cerium literally has to do nothing but make sure it's up.

I don't imagine he's making anything like Lore was for a brief period, but that didn't last long anyway. Then his forum split in half a few years later. Now that it's finally been upgraded I assume GAF doesn't cost anywhere near as much per user to run as it used to. And not just because of the split, it's not a backend kludge anymore. He's probably making some money off it again really.

They're using Cloudfare CDN services so I'm not sure about hosting but the Pro plan with a load balancer should come in at $25 a/month and the bigger plan $200 a month.
A VPS with near unlimited data would set you back about $20 - $50 a month tops. Because the forum doesn't require a lot of storage.

So what you're looking at is a monthly cost anywhere between $100 - $250 a month and perhaps $500 during 'peak hours' such as E3.

Cloudflare isn't a host, the domain name resolves to an Amazon server in Virginia. Lots of "hosts" that just use AWS give you Cloudflare for "free" too.

I'm talking about hosting. And literally the only thing you pay for with hosting is what you upload to your server, plus what the visitors of your website/forum whatever use.
if it's a bunch of avatars and pages filled with text, with very little CSS and no self-hosted images... hosting costs will be low.

Expensive shit is people streaming movies on your website or having people download/upload (large) files. But as I said, ResetEra hosts nothing of that themselves.
Especially if they use Amazon and you pay as you go, it won't be a massive investment. The footprint of a page on REE minus all the externally hosted elements is 54kb. Which is next to nothing in terms of data.

My speculation to the profit figure is based entirely around that they're in that semi-sweet spot of traffic where your costs aren't inflating due to it.

To put it another way, riotous thinks they've been kicked up to level 3 or 4 services, I think they're managing just at the peak of level 2 and/or coming in just under level 3 often enough to where the other 11 months will pay for an E3. (Although that does raise the question of if they had any kind of E3 deluge like GAF would get. I suspect they might not have had one this year at least looking at the unique users graph.)

Every second resetera is handling thousands of web requests that then execute various code including several thousand more per-second database / cache hit queries.

The fact it's not a lot of data is irrelevant;  data costs are a fraction of server costs for the vast majority of non video based web sites.

It would be interesting to know if they use a SQL or NoSQL solution. For NoSQL AWS charges $0.25 per million read request units, while for SQL it's usually charged by the 'hour'.

I'm with you on that because I don't think the particular services they need or use send up red flags at Amazon that they need to move to a higher tier.
If it's NoSQL than I'm pretty certain in fact and judging by the speed I would be surprised if it wasn't.

They way they talk about it they also don't seem to realize how it operated even during Vietnam. Making remarks about Trump or Cheney is how it operated more broadly than they imagine. Deferments and never getting called was how most people experienced it. The brief period where they were drafting old school is what taught the military that they actually hated the draft for modern warfare. Took too long to train the draftees with zero experience. Plus they remained as problems beyond that.
