He deserves to catch it like Boris did. Dying or not, I'll leave that up to a higher power than myself to decide.

Pretty clear at this point, De Santis isn't fit to lead Florida's response to this. I remember reading that if you only close schools, it'll only be a reduction of 2% in terms of COVID cases. Well, we're going to see if restarting them again keeps that number at 2% or not in about a month.

He's not dumb, he's a sociopath.

He literally fired the lead COVID data analyst because she was giving numbers that were leading to disagreeable post-press conference questions by journalists.
Which is a criminal and illegal act by the way.

Scott Gottlieb, former FDA head said on Face the Nation that the southern states (Arizona, Texas, California, Florida, etc) is more like Brazil vs. Italy. AKA, this is going to plateau at a high number of cases instead of a spike and a low drop.  :(

I don't think wearing no masks in an open air park is too bad provided people space out sensibly and groups are kept to small sizes. With the situation in large parts of the US being so bad, I can see why you'd think it should lean on the more cautious side of things.

It's all very strange. Europe opened up again and despite a few hot spots like meat processing plants there wasn't a huge spike in cases.
Now sure, there are some measures in effect but social distancing is still sort of a 'best effort' thing and masks aren't mandatory in most countries.
Borders have also opened, so there's tourists moving from and to different countries as well.

In some cities and states the US actually has more measures in place. Schools are still closed for example and masks are used in stores.
So either these states wholesale ignored every measure, including social distancing and washing hands or there's something else going on.
In Europe we're focusing research more and more on poor ventilation combined with air conditioning as a major cause for super spreading events.

Devos on TV today was fucking insane. Literally would not say that schools should follow CDC guidelines, also would not give any advice on what they should or shouldn't do, DOE doesn't have any plans to give to districts and won't develop any for something that hasn't happened yet (IE an out break of COVID in schools), doesn't consider online learning to be legitimate instruction, schools just have to figure it out because society and the economy can't handle kids not being in school 5 days a week.

It's not just charter school money, all funding is tied to attendance in most states.

There's some main ways to receive funding for public schools and charter schools, at least in California, other states may set it up differently. Private schools by and large rely on directly charging parents tuition.

1) Daily Attendance rate: An enrolled student attends school, it is split per day that the student attends. The school receives more money each day the student attends. Students who are chronically absent are students who miss 15 days throughout the school year or 10% of the school year.

If you attend a school that follows an independent study program, you prove attendance by the work product. I.E., every week, there's an assignment you put to the side with the student's name and signature, date, and class, and you take a daily attendance log as a backup.

2) Direct from property tax revenue. This is why school districts in richer areas are strict with their school boundaries, as they don't get paid if students come out of district.

3) LCAP - Local Control and Accountability Plan, which allows schools to set their budget, and goals for the upcoming school years. Forcast in 1, 2 and 3 years. Also includes information on at risk groups, including students from low income families, special education and English Language Learners. Schools receive more funding currently if they can show via their percentage numbers (eg, you prove a student may come from a low income family if they receive free or reduce lunch pricing).

4) Federal funding, which may be distributed though LCAP, etc.

If you're wondering how schools were funded since schools were closed since March, many states including California waived the attendance requirement for schools to continue to receive funding. I was able to receive my regular salary since school closed in March. We did some extra stuff like breaking students into smaller groups to have them check in, contact parents, etc. Not going to lie, it was hard to contact some families. A number of students took it as a sign that they didn't need to do anything since everything was online.

they want schools open as childcare so they can make the parents go back to work

because their ideology won't let them consider paying people to stay home, because they can't admit they fucked up, because they think boosting The Economy is important for reelection, etc.

Trump's polling is in the shitter (far more than normal). Opening the economy isn't going to do shit when most (smart) people are calling bullshit for reopening when the virus (especially now in the summer months!) is easy to catch in groups with no proper precautions.

I agree with Mandark, but it's not just Trump's who has been pushing schools to be open, but governors Gavin Newsom has as well. States need kids in school because it'll allow their parents to work. States need the revenue because the federal government has sucked about funding a fraction of what they need to actually address COVID.

The issue, to actually reopen schools safely would mean roughly twice the school staff, with twice the school space. When schools are open in other countries, it's been in groups of 10-15 and that's in countries where the virus has abated for the moment. In countries where the COVID has spiked again, like Israel, one of the first things they did was shut down schools. We're trying to open up schools where the virus is running wild, it's just not safe.

AFAIK, other countries (Japan?) have kids do "shifts" where one part of the class is there for like 2-3 days of the week and the other half does it. I dunno if that'd be super viable with COVID (and I highly doubt it, but that's the pessimist in me) but there's nothing necessarily stopping schools from attempting that.

...BEYOND class/student sizes.

Public schools already had a huge issue with class sizes.

I think Japanese class sizes are on average larger than US class sizes.

There are a lot of options available and I'm sympathetic to the idea that a lot of damage is being done by keeping kids out of school, we just need the willpower to do things safely and not ignore the experts.

Yes, just about everyone (and when I say everyone, I haven't heard anyone actually argue that they can do full time school, 5 days for everyone outside of the Trump administration) have been planning for hybrid schedule, where students either show up every other day, or 2 days of the week, and rotate.

I'm saying it's still not safe because staff is still expected there everyday, and asking students to sit in the same classroom for all day with masks on and keeping socially distant is not going to last the first hour.

Quote
The Orange County Board of Education is hosting a special meeting tomorrow, where officials are expected to recommend that schools return in the fall — without implementing the use of face masks, social distancing or reduced class sizes.

Quote
The board of education panel recommendations apply for all ages between kindergarten and 12th grade, and state that children represent the lowest risk and that as a result, major changes will not be implemented.

Quote
The recommendations also sought to give parents options, calling remote learning an “utter failure,” and allows parents to send their children to a new district with every day in class instruction.

The recommendations are being sent out as many school districts across the county are meeting to determine plans for whether or not students will return this fall.

One of the experts on the panel – which included a county supervisor and the head of Orange County’s Health Care Agency – was quoted anonymously as saying, “This is a disease that kills our most elderly and spares our children. It may sound callous, but would we want it the other way around?”

The report also specifically cited concerns about masks and social distancing harming children multiple times.

“Requiring children to wear masks during school is not only difficult – if not impossible to implement – but not based on science. It may even be harmful,” the board’s report read under its recommendations.

A lower section of the report linked social distancing with harmful effects on children.

“Because of the established link between social-distancing and child harm, we cannot support extraordinary efforts aimed at social-distancing at school,” the report said. “Mandatory masks may well lead to a spike in childhood behavior problems such as learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, and depression to name a few.”

“We have hurt hundreds of thousands of more children than we have helped,” said Dr. Sherry Kropp, one of the panelists, in the report.

"calling remote learning an 'utter failure,'."

Having seen that first hand: They're right. For all the talk up that tech firms did, they didn't help IT departments get these kids comfortable with online learning at all. Parents and their kids struggling, the teachers having no fucking contact beyond e-mail (which the parents are damn near Boomers on because they have to work a full-time job to have a place to live, eat, etc for their kid...)

Kids will get tested today as both have a fever.

Me and the wife don't need testing despite slight coughs as kids results have to come in first.

I think there were 9 confimred new cases in this entire region of 100k in the last 7 days so I hope things are ok.

Not kawaii

Okinawa HATES the military presence on their island. They’re furious about flight paths and early morning exercises, so of course they’re angry about this as well.

I mean, they should be upset. It’s essentially a remaining occupational force, and the troops do not treat the locals with any degree of respect. It’s not surprising. It also barely counts as Japan.

Got tested yesterday in Ontario and had the results 12 hours later. Negative.

116 new cases today. 20,896 tests.
