Lol that Trump backtracked on the taskforce ending because "he didn't realize how popular it was". Actually, he said he DID know that, but didn't know if other people knew it, but then other people told him it was very popular, so he's keeping it around.

And also the White House is saying all Americans being tested is nonsense.

Numbers continue to trend in the right way in France and the bulk of the backlog deaths in care homes was finally ingested (still 40% of known fatalities  :-\ ).

Authorities have started using a map differentiating between green, orange and red zones / départments which should shortly be made definitive (with green and red zones only), some of the lockdown measures should be relaxed earlier in green zones (though it is still a bit hazy... parks opening is reliant on this I believe).
Status is a combination of fast the infection is running and the strain on healthcare services, the latter being seemingly more of an issue now than the former.

Maps can be seen here :

https://solidarites-sante.gouv.fr/soins-et-maladies/maladies/maladies-infectieuses/coronavirus/etat-des-lieux-et-actualites/article/indicateurs-de-l-activite-epidemique

Basically : Paris region, the East and Mayotte are the parts hardest hit still.

I'm going to assume that, even if it was updated at 4/30, it would be premature data. Deaths lag. Is their logic that COVID saved a net 40,000 lives?

"Lucero said receiving PPE or COVID-19 tests, and not body bags, back in March was critical while they were working to curb the spread of the virus. At the time, the Seattle Indian Health Board did not have the capacity to test, and although the Federal Emergency Management Agency did offer to provide testing for the center, the logistics involved didn't make the process feasible, Lucero said."

"Meanwhile, Lucero said, the county did help deliver about 200 COVID-19 test kits through FEMA."

"The Seattle Indian Health Board has previously received some federal funding, which has helped to set up an additional testing site and keep the center operating, Echo-Hawk said"

NJ taking the lead in daily deaths. Is it the people who have to commute to NY, plus the disrepair of their large cities?

They've been around those numbers for at least a week (?). I haven't looked if they were on a delay to NYS where fatalities have hopefully decreased a bit.

So one of the companies I worked with closed, will reopen Monday and I'll resume going there. Apparently there will be "COVID supervisors" among managers to ensure distancing & safety rules. Haven't had much details beyond surgical masks being supplied by the company and the fact it will be skeleton crews. Before closing for lockdown they also had hand sanitizers, wipes and limiting number of people per office (if 1 was not possible) put in place.

Reading stuff elsewhere it does seem it's the guidance from authorities for company offices resuming work, maybe with a couple more wrinkles (having ground marker at Xerox machines etc, mandatory masks and gloves when not in office, having a circulation path in hallways...).

Not sure this theorical plan will survive first contact with reality but :yeshrug it's a more severe and restrictive regime than what was on place on the company I worked at during lockdown.

The public transport operators in Paris apparently wrote a joint letter to the Prime Minister to say they didn't have the financial and human means to implement the government demand to somehow allow for users to respect the 1m rule. It's of course wholly unrealistic if the number of travellers shoots up to normal average or slightly below, even if traffic is back to 100%. Of course the idea is to keep WFH in place as long as possible wherever possible...

The head of Sweden's coronavirus response said in a new interview that the country's high death toll had "come as a surprise" and was "really something we worry a lot about."

The state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told "The Daily Show" that the Swedish strategy had still been successful in many ways.

But he said the no-lockdown strategy was not a conscious decision in favor of more deaths — instead he said the outsize toll was not part of the plan.

About half of Sweden's deaths have been in nursing homes, which prohibit visitors. Tegnell said health officials had thought it would be easier to keep the disease away from them.

Germany is under the radar but their fatality numbers certainly did rise in the 200 a day range somewhat frequently. They still appear to have done a much better job so far than all the other major Western Europe countries but it did catch up a bit.

Less confirmed deaths than Belgium still so...

The United States: We tried lockdown measures--we kind of tried them (in most states), and they didn't work (and they weren't necessary). Sure, it worked in densely populated countries, highly reliant on public transit--but that makes it easier! Also, this is the flu.

I don't doubt more people are dying at home, but I imagine there are a ton of people who are afraid to go to the hospital with heart conditions and are dying of strokes at home. My siblings and I had to talk our 71 year old mother into going to the hospital for heart palpitations recently. She turned out to be okay, but if left to her own devices she would've just sat with it.

A survey of nine major hospitals earlier this month showed the number of severe heart attacks being treated in U.S hospitals had dropped by nearly 40% since the novel coronavirus took hold in March

I saw some people freaking out that Ventura county contract tracing team is going to actually do what contract tracing does and isolate known cases. Which might means giving that person a hotel room or trailer to live in while they're infected because they need their own bathroom so they don't give the rona to other people.

Not great, but not terrible.

A month ago there were 12,600 deaths in the US. It was at 60,000 5 days ago. A month ago the expected deathcount was lowered to 50-60k and we'll almost assuredly hit 80k by Monday. That seems pretty terrible, imo.

91% of Quebec's deaths have been in those 70 years or older.

I decided to compare that to Illinois, which has detailed stats and a similar death count. Only 68% of Illinois' deaths have been in those 70 or over.

I think this goes away if I control for race.

edit:
Not exactly.
Illinois
82% of white deaths are 70 or over.
73% of Asian deaths are 70 or over.
60% of black deaths are 70 or over.
49% of Hispanic deaths are 70 or over.

Whites skew older, but that seems much.

Percentage of COVID-19 deaths white-non-Hispanic:
20-29 0%
30-39 16%
40-49 10%
50-59 20%
60-69 30%
70-79 42%
80+   56%
