I see the sentiment a lot on this forum that people find the word gamer either offensive or cringey and this is ridiculous. It's a perfectly acceptable term for someone who plays games as a hobby. Any feelings you associate with the word are entirely and probably a reflection of some misplaced shame you carry with your hobby. Just like we call people cyclists, or readers, bookworms, cinephiles, movie buffs, foodies or binge watchers we can define people with an ardent interest in games "Gamers".

It really feels like some people on the site are stuck in the mentality of school and being social outcasts to look at a word and recoil from being defined as it.

Games are as diverse as any other entertainment medium, They can reach lofty hights and be called Art or they can be hammy schlock and fodder.

Opinions?

 

This is just straight up wrong. Almost all games are based in fantasy or sci-fi and most would be classified as "action".

Compared to film and TV, there are desperately few games that would qualify as drama or comedy and very few where the conflict is resolved without violence.

Although, for a forum whose inhabitants almost exclusively watch comic book movies, they can be excused for not understanding what diverse means.

It kinda is though. Why would your present gender not matching the gender you were assumed to have at birth be even remotely relevant to this game? How would you even know a character was transgender unless it's a plot point in the story? Do you go off physical presentation and how that matches up with your criteria for man / woman / male / female? Yikes! Wouldn't the revelation that the character was trans be problematic anyway, akin to deadnaming?

I feel like they want the kind of sterotypical representation that a transphobe would create.

Gonna be honest: it is objectively good to see that kind of gender option in character creation, but it’s kinda a laughable response when not only Rowling but now this guy are still attached.

If it truly was an internal push vs Warner going for good PR that makes it a bit better but... doesn’t really change anything.

This is like the most meaningless inclusion that you do to try and get people off your backs.

It doesn’t stop people from being transphobic and being a shitlord. It also doesn’t stop transphobic groups from using this as an example of overreach.

Ironically I’d prefer them to either go full on trans inclusion or not even bother with this. This is just muddying the waters in so many ways. It’s not true inclusion, as it’s such a small part of the game that only people really looking for it will notice, the guy still likely got his job even with WB knowing his shitlordness and JK Rowling is still making mad bank from this to still be transphobic and fund transphobic things.

It’s still overwhelmingly net negative at best and more negative at worse as it gives even more ammo to transphobic individuals and groups.

This kind of shit is why I'm sceptical of the value of representation in fiction. Especially when it comes from others.
