The problem with GAF, the REAL problem, is that there are simply too many people with too many conflicting views to have everything gaming related under one sub-forum. Ideally, there would be a Nintendo sub-forum, a Sony sub-forum, a Microsoft sub-forum, and a PC sub-forum. Maybe another sub-forum for more opinion-related threads, such as "What is your favorite game?" or "What is better: X or Y?", just to kind of get those kinds of things in one place.

They have YCS which is where the distinguished mentally-challenged shit goes. Most of the chaff is contained in that forum and there is actually some good discussion in the main games forum.

Splitting it up into separate groups would work but I think fanboys would inevitably wander to other sections to brag or damage control.  Mods would have to have a harsh crackdown on that kind of stuff but given how mods seem to enjoy being in the fray (by changing titles or people's tags), I don't think they would do much.

Typically the fallout settles once consoles are firmly in their positions until a lot of details on the next gen consoles emerge.  Things somewhat seemed stable this summer until rumors of the PS3 slim hit.  I think we'll end up going through the generation with the same crap.  Even if PS3 slim sales go back to normal, they're going to think that the next price drop will be the big one or how Gran Turismo 5 might be the game many million people are willing to get a PS3 for.  Nintendo fans will always complain about how they're no longer getting the newest, hottest shit.  With Galaxy 2 coming out next year, I think they'll just focus on that.  After that, you know rumors are going to start about the next generation.  Maybe a DS successor getting announced, I don't know.

I agree that the board is too big.  This might explain some of the hyperbole: these people, knowing that some threads can receive 30-40 new posts per minute (NPD, E3, etc.), they need to step up the hyperbole so they can get noticed.  A game is no longer good, it is "holy fuck this is awesome wowsome."  A game is no longer mediocre, it is "this game is so shitty omg."  A bad game just gets laughed at or photoshopped.  Hey, how about throwing Wolverine in there?  What a fantastic idea!  This is true because a lot of GAF members want to get tagged, even if it is humiliating.  It means some mod or admin took a few seconds out of their life to recognize this person.  GAF fanboys these days need recognition and will often go nuts without it.

As for the , I adblocked that shit a long time ago.  I basically adblocked anyone with a fad avatar, playstation.com emoticons, anime lolis, and basically every avatar that featured a woman in a sexualized pose (except for your Hayek avi, Jinfash)  Reason for the latter being that most GAF members (on both sides of the issue!) have very awkward gender discussions.

Anyway, splitting a board up into subforums for each console/brand sounds good at first but inevitably only serves to further the groupthink, us vs. them mindset among the console fanbots and doesn't do much to discourage system warfare. You'll still have Xbox tards starting Xbox circlejerks and then Wii or PS3 tards feeling compelled to fly their console's flag in the middle of it. Until people stop integrating their plastic and metal electronic devices into their own self-identities, you're not going to solve GAF or any other forum's problem. All you can do is find some other place to congregate. And, yes, you'd be better off with one with less people.

Gaf needs a split.  or at least a fucking icon to show what I've posted in, which every board has.  I subscribe to lots of threads, but it would be easier to see if a thread I've posted in is bumped while I'm browsing for new threads. 

but I think a split by console/company would be a nice psychological barrier.  People might be more cautious of invading the other's territory, while Uncharted faggotry fanboys would be contained, so when something awesome happens, it's not in every single thread on the board.  It wouldn't be perfect, but it would be better.  CAG has that and while I don't post there anymore, it generally kept things clean, aside from a few who totally could not contain themselves...

I guess evilore makes enough off of adsense to not give a fuck? and drama keeps a lot of people coming back.  I dunno.

It would have one major advantage by being a GAF subforum: terrible posters like the ones aforementioned and fanboys like deepbrown and kittonwy would stumble in and get butthurt by the threads, leading to their being branded as fanboys or banned for being humorless effete fellows.

And the moderation which I use to consider a strong point has decreased in quality to match imo. Not sure what can be done about it. Perhaps it is inevitable when a forum gets that big. It is too easy for a small group of trolls to pretty much derail any and every thread and get lots of backup from their fellow trolls.

I was going to mention Kojima because I think the ZoE2 team would make an amazing Gundam game, but lol will never happen.  I think what's hard about making Gundam games that are FUN is too many devs try to make them serious sims like tank games and that's just...not great.

Capcom attempted to make it more action when they did Gundam vs. Zeon which spawned all these sequels and it worked pretty well.  I wish the games were a little more than just virtual-on clones because they look and play well.

The Dynasty Warrior Gundam games are also an attempt to do more action less sim and I dig them outside the heavy repetition.

Armored Core games are fun for the customization aspect, not so much the combat.  Gundam games rarely feature much customization, so it wouldn't be a good fit that way.

and yeah, the ACE games rocked.  The best Gundam games are Side Story on Dreamcast and One Year War.  They both managed to capture the feeling of Gundam and be good games.  The ones this gen seem to fail at both (except the Musou games).

All good ideas, execpt you need more consistent and tougher moderation than it just being transparent. Subforums dont work, and there's just too many posters, 99.9% who contribute nothing. I can't think of a forum I've visited where the signal to noise ratio is so low.

I wonder what the forum would be like if they got rid of everyone under the age of 16. It seems that ever since the mass influx of new posters a while back the average IQ and age of posters has decreased incredibly, which also corresponds with the increasing entitlement complexes and inability to react logically to anything.

Perhaps because I engage in it a bit myself I think sales age has its place. Although like anything it can be taken overboard since it can form just another expression of fan-boyism. I think the core problem however is still rampant fanboyism at the root though and that will manifest itself in many many different ways including sales age. Either you have stricter moderation or you separate people into sub sections and come down hard on the people who clearly trespass into sub-sections where they don't belong. In that instance at least the trolling becomes a bit more obvious and you've separated the most virulent posters and given them a home that ideally keeps them separated from the more general population.

The sub-forums would allow trolling in their respective forums, but the main gaming forum.....if you troll there, you're dead meat.

Now that I think about it, it probably is beyond time for gaf to make some new mods, isn't it? Its been a long time since Duckroll and Red Scarlet joined the fray, and since then the membership has just increased exponentially and the fanboys have gotten crazier. Plus alot of mods are mods in name only at this point (Sonycowboy, Jinx) while others have drastically decreased their, well, moderating (bish). I mean, Amirox and Duckroll pretty much do over 50% of the gaming forum moderating by themselves at this point.

This place isn't exactly the epitome of discussion a lot of you make it out to be.  Not that I'm helping that cause in any constructive way.  But, mostly with the mention of allstairw, that got me thinking to how y2kev, chespace, and others eventually just stop posting here.  I see white man post on gaf occasionally too.  This place is more guilty of hivemind mentality and egocentric arguments with no respect for someone's preferences.  When you have bore posters proud of the fact that you can resort to ad hominem attacks and other such asinine attitudes its very presumptious to think anyone would prefer this forum.  I have my qualms with Neogaf, but there isn't much of a good alternative besides the somethingawful forums.  But like pilonv1 said, it can be overwhelming.

I agree with you (!!!) that in spite of inviting many quality posters, they post for a little while, and then find their way back to GAF.  Then people offer excuses (Oh, he's just busy and only has time to post on one forum.  He will come back, you'll see!) but they never come back, save for a few days here and there, and then go right back.

EB at this point isn't the exclusive club a lot of people here believe.  Most people who have spent a few hours in the OT know about the board.  The Borecast is the best part of the site TBH and you can keep up with that on GAF.
