Comedies are actually known as being rather difficult to make well, even if they don't get the respect they deserve for it. Just having a truly funny and well directed comedy is an accomplishment in of itself.

But yeah it is hard for comedies to pass as the Oscar's informal criteria is for all movie to be drama-y.

Yes, the academy awards organization wants better ratings and causally, more popular movies nomited. However the large group who actually does vote for the movies are not so like minded and so I fully expect them to just nominate 5 more artsy drama movies than anything popular.

Actually, the change in how the Academy counts the votes will likely have a far greater effect than the number of nominees, I'd say.

Race issues are handled a lot differently in the US than in Europe.

It is why a person at one place gets away with throwing bananas onto a football field but if he tried at another place, he would get the shit kicked out of him for doing it.

Race issues are often put right in your face in the US, which I think is a good thing. Even then, it is heavily subdued because it is too awkward for people to discuss intelligently.

No, because we have a capacity to anticipate and consider the future in a way no other animal can as far as we know. Don't know if it makes us 'better', but it does make us different in the way we experience pain and death. That said, I also thinks this puts a burden on us to not be cruel to animals, especially those that feel pain.

I don't know man... I had a stupid fucking bird [seriously, he's an asshole] that would start squawking when we were on our way home. I'd know my mom was coming home within 5 minutes based on how the bird acted, before the dogs could hear the car or she'd even be in the subdivision. Coincidence over a now 15+ year time span? Who fucking knows? We really don't know what capacity animals have for sure. All species have their pros and cons. Better senses, faster reaction times, etc. etc. etc. We might be able to stand upright and talk (both of which aren't exclusive to us), but so what? Maybe dog farts are what are really powering the world, but us stupid humans haven't figured it out yet.
