My problem is that the 2K employee confirmed that he wasn't a paid or contacted, which left me wondering what's the point of the ban. By Evilore's definition in that thread, every overzealous and rabid fan should get banned for creating any hype thread.

I have a feeling he's going to stay banned and the thread will remain as it is. It would be embarrassing for the mod staff to try and save face. This is definitely one of the reasons why changing thread titles prematurely isn't the best idea (total pie in face).

I kind of see a bigger problem with this thread in that it fits right in with what you will find here on GAF to an extent. Many, many threads come off as viral. Its come to a point I don't even trust some threads especially the "I just got a PS3 what game should I buy" ones. I refuse to believe so many seem to have been living under a damn rock for the past 2-3 years.

Banned, perhaps. Three months for what I said, though? No, honestly didn't see that one coming. I could see three months for various comments I've made (even I consider bans to be about the lamest possible form of community tool), but not for what I was supposedly banned for. The problem with the internet is that there is no ruler for sincerity. I do think the mods are a bit too trigger happy, though, and on GAF it's almost safer to be constantly insincere than it is to be an actual critic of the industry.

The problem is different mods with different biases and opinions on how to handle rule breakers.

One mod might get butthurt over it and ban you for three months where another would post the emoticon.  Some mods have pet issues they take offense to.  It's hard to figure out what they are without being on the boards for a while.  I suppose the right answer is to not try to push your luck at all but in a board full of shrill fanboys and habitual rule breakers, that is easier said than done.

I suppose the best policy is to fly under the radar.  Works for me.

The only thing that doesn't look cool is that you have a gun.  I want a space game that's all about pleasing space nerds.  Make an adventure game set around a space station where you can do space walks that look as cool as they do in that video, but instead of combat, you're just trying to find what needs repairing and stuff like that.  Then you can go back inside and eat special ramen noodles that are meatball shaped

They aren't fostering intellectual discussion much or I'd be posting in Gaming far more often. They poo-poo on certain humor and mock any attempt at intellectual discussion. And what is left in between is just segregated fanaticism. All the while doing this, certain people over inflate the status and importance of the forum.

It all leads to these strange and meandering moral boundaries, where you are guilty of being a shill if you are merely thought of as viral marketer. And being someone who had complained at all the sudden Xbox shilling that appeared on the forum before the Xbox appeared on shelves, I certainly dislike viral marketing, but I doubt the OP even considered himself viral.  He put up a outrageous title, which he probably thought goes well along with the rest of the status quo of Gaming threads there, and then just listed his reasons for wanting Outlands features in more games. NeoGaf would love the same discussion in a 1up podcast, but since this is not a celebrity of their own, well then it is knives out.
