While Snapchat’s new filter is a lot of silly fun, there’s a more serious side to it. For one thing, it shines a light on regressive gender norms. In Snapchat world, being an attractive “female” apparently means having long hair, long lashes, and very pale skin. Meanwhile, being a man means having a square jaw, short hair, thick eyebrows, and a beard. It’s somewhat ironic that an app that encourages you to play with gender has such a binary view of it. Then you’ve got the fact that some men have, apparently, been using photos of their female alter egos to see what life is like for women on Tinder. In some ways this is great: it lets men understand the extent to which women get harassed on dating apps. But the idea of “trapping” people into thinking you are a woman also veers into transphobic territory.

Is all of this overthinking what is simply meant to be a fun app? Maybe. However, we ought not to lose sight of the fact that while gender-swapping online might be a good laugh, people still get killed for doing it in real life.

All weekend, as I attempted to tweet about gay orgies, Mother’s Day, and Game of Thrones, every time I opened the app I was confronted by photos of my mutuals, mostly gay men, filtered to look like women or hypermasculine men. The tone of these tweets was largely humorous: “LOL, look what I’d look like if I was more traditionally masculine, trade alert! Haha, look what I’d look like as a woman! Isn’t that funny, me, a man, looking like a woman!”

And nowhere amidst all these selfies did I see any of these folks, who for the most part fall under the category of progressive liberal metropolitan queers, practicing any self-awareness about what posting these filtered photos and videos might mean to their transgender and gender nonconforming friends and followers.

Because that’s the thing: this filter is literally an instant transition, and the humorous way I’m seeing it shared is...not cute. My Twitter mutuals don’t go with me to every painful laser hair removal appointment, don’t understand the feeling of waking up three times a night to pee because of Spironolactone’s diuretic properties, don’t shove a needle full of estrogen into their thigh twice a month, haven’t listened to me grapple with the dilemma of whether or not to get facial feminization surgery. They don’t understand the pain and endurance required for trans people to get themselves even close to their ideal presentation — so no, I certainly don’t want to look into my phone screen and see what some app developer has decided the most perfectly feminine version of me is. Nor do I want to see memes poking fun at the very real violence trans folks face.

Before you post your next manipulated selfie, maybe take a second to wonder: is it funny to imagine what you’d look like as a woman? Because that thought is all that gets some folks out of bed in the morning. The idea that we can alter our bodies to more closely align with our perception of ourselves is very serious to some people, so your funny tweet about how fish you look with a hairless, shaved down chin and luscious locks might not be funny to everyone. It might, in fact, remind some of us of how hard it is to achieve even half of what you’ve been able to construct with a single swipe and that most people in the world still see our attempt as something to jeer at. Stick with the bunny ears.

The virality of these "gender-swap" posts has meant that the internet has become even more of a casual transphobia landmine than usual. And the excuses fall flat: It's just harmless fun! Let people enjoy things! It might even be empowering! But it's hard to join in when the "fun" involves constantly reminding you of your dysphoria and the daily struggle of transitioning.

Viewing these posts from friends and family could contribute to dysphoria, because trans people are seeing those who are supposed to support and care for them participate in the humor of physical transition, Furuya said.

On Twitter, many trans people are imploring cis people to think critically about the jokes' consequences. Some feel that the cis community doesn't understand the frustration of watching someone construct — in a single swipe — what transgender people may work at through years of pain and hardship.

Even just taking a moment to consider how mentally and physically exhausting it is to exist as a trans person can make all the difference in creating a more empathic and welcoming internet. Taking a step back can also help cis people consider the ways they interact with and support trans people offline.

It's almost never just a joke either. Furuya described casual transphobic humor, in online spaces or in everyday culture, as a "snow ball effect" that could lead to harm for the trans community. Letting these jokes slide allows cis people to become more comfortable with the dehumanization of trans identities.

I'm glad I checked just before I participated in such disgusting behavior.

lol no, that's some old video that's been around the internet from like star wars kid ages, i just overlaid "Anything But Typical" on it after me and this other dude were doing a bunch of TubeDubs on random stupid videos and it lined up so well

that's the same reason that video (and two stupid examples) that's a clip from Perfect with Jamie Curtis and John Travolta doing aerobics is on my YouTube, because no matter what random pop/rock music you put it to it seemingly syncs up perfectly, i ripped the version with no sound in the proper aspect ratio from a DVD after we used a shitty miscropped version that was the only one on YouTube back in like 2012 for a year
