New Hunter X Hunter anime is now past the redundant inferior rendition of the first few arcs.  It should handle the Greed Island arc better than the original.  Then in a couple months the Chimera arc will finally be animated  :heart

It's the only anime I've watched in 2012  :-\

Attack on Titan anime is cool news.  I read the manga for a bit and it was rad.  Hope they don't tone down the gruesomeness of the manga.

I watched the remaining JoJo's Phantom Blood episodes.

Part II is so much better already....not that I disliked part 1!  Odd that a minor character barely featured before is a "big" villain in the beginning of it.

Yeah, this and Isao Takahata's Kaguya-hime are both scheduled for release next summer in Japan. Based on the gap for the past three Ghibli movies, I wouldn't expect it to come out over here until AT LEAST the summer of 2014, maybe even later than that.

Recently, I've been on an 80's anime kick, basically just finding the most obscure stuff and giving it a watch:

Goku - The Midnight Eye

Another 80's masterpiece from the king of anime trash: Yoshiaki Kawajiri [Cyper City Oedo, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll] and based on a series from the creator of Space Adventure Cobra. Goku is a cool detective who gets drawn into the deaths of his former friends on the police force, which all tie back to this bad guy who kills people with crazy hypnotism. Over the course of this, Goku gets one of his eyes replaced with this cybernetic eye that can hack any computer and tell him that there's poison on this woman's lips. And it's all set in some dark, cyberpunk world heavily inspired by Blade Runner.

Capricorn

Breezy bit of fantasy fluff from sometimes hentai artist Jouji Manabe [Outlanders, Caravan Kidd, Drakuun]. There's really not much to it, unfortunately, as it's too many ideas and too much story crammed into too little time. That's a common problem in these old 80's OVAs. And this one doesn't even really have any decent animation to fall back on. It's not bad, I guess, but not particularly interesting either.

Girl Detective Club

Another example of an 80's OVA that would have made a decent series but doesn't work with too well in the one-shot format. Here, three girls get involved in a plot by the superintendent of their private girls school to steal a crazy spaceship-looking weapon developed by the father of one of the girls. There's way too much that needs to be established and developed for that to really work but isn't because they don't have any time. It jumps between goofy and oddly dark for a while and then ends with a giant explosion. Animation is pretty flat, for the most part.

Prefectural Earth Defense Force

A group of dumb aliens [maybe they're aliens, it's hard to say] are intent on taking over the world by starting with a rural prefecture [just like Excel Saga!]. It's all just pointless fluff, but has a good sense of humor and some really nice animation. Basically, the titular PEDF are the three sole members of the local highschool baseball team and they sort of get paired up with a guy who got transformed into a robot by a crazy doctor and the aliens are basically incompetent and incapable of doing anything remote threatening. The content works better in this format since it never takes anything even remotely seriously. The only downside is that it, unlike the others, actually makes you wish there was a lot more.

I was also on a recent 80s kick.

I watched:

Megazone 23 Part 1 and 2: Hands down some of the best anime out there. Both are fast paced so nothing even feels like filler or slow paced. Both have characters that are belviable and feel well....rather realistic. Just really good fun.

Space Adventure Cobra-Feels very 70s and well the story was very strange. Cobra is a fun lead and well the action is very kentic and zany. Beautifully directed and has some fantastic direction. Also A+ to the female character design.

Nausica Valley of the Wind- I guess its good. I don't know, felt pretty bored by the whole thing and it's protag. It does feel like a grand aventure so thats a plus, but just kind of predictable. Best character was the evil chicks 2nd in command.

I also recently watched Ninja Scroll again and it's extremely fun and well paced action movie. Probably one of the best anime wise. Metropolis, which is extremely well animated, but has one of the worst child guardians ever. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust which was very pretty, but the main conflict kind of a bore. The final fight seems very forced.

How awesome is Yoshiaki Kawajiri? I'll tell you how awesome:

-Lensman
-The Running Man [segment from Neo Tokyo]
-Wicked City
-Demon City Shinjuku
-Ninja Scroll
-Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
-World Record and Program [segments from Animatrix]
-Highlander: The Search for Vengeance
-Goku: The Midnight Eye
-Cyber City Oedo
-Deadshot [segment from Gotham Knight]
-Birdy the Might OVA
-X

Yoshiaki Kawajiri is a perfectionist. In multiple interviews, he's pointed out that when he finishes a movie and watches the final product, he feels a weird mixture of immense satisfaction at the finer points and dissatisfaction and the stuff he should've done better. His journey as a filmmaker has been about trying to minimize that sense of dissatisfaction. To him, doing so requires a great deal of autonomy; “I tend to be difficult to work with if I'm not given my freedom,” he glibly remarked during a Q&A session at Sakura-con this year.

:bow

He's basically the Trashy Hayao Miyazaki.

I'm watching his Highlander movie right now [the uncut 96-minute version released in Japan] and it's pretty awesome, definitely takes a lot of inspiration from Fist of the North Star, which I certainly have no problem with. The animation is generally pretty nice, too, although it's far from the best I've seen recently.

I don't think it managed to get even an ounce of hype, or marketing. Which is unfortunate, because it's probably the best thing to happen to the Highlander franchise since 1986.

Finished watching Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse.  And uh...that's it?  What a weird way to end things.  Not a particularly satisfying ending-
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Russians' secret agenda is never revealed and the leader of the resistance movement that just pops up out of nowhere also has no motivations explained.
[close]
It's just like "WE SAVED THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY FROM BLOWING UP!  YAY!  BUT ALIENS ARE STILL THERE AND NOTHING ELSE HAS BEEN RESOLVED!," followed by the two main female characters not telling the protagonist their feelings.  "WE ARE RIVALS IN LOVE!  ~THE END~"  WTF?   :lol ???

Jormungand also ended.  The second season felt incredibly rushed.  And just when things get interesting and Jormungand actually comes into the picture...it's over.

Psycho-Pass has been great.  I hope it ends well, unlike those other two series.

Started watching K.  The plot is nonsensical, but damn if this show doesn't look awesome.  Love the soundtrack, too.

Also watched the first episode of Btooom!  It's like someone really, really liked that "dark and gritty" Bomberman Act Zero game that came out on the 360 some years back and made an anime out of it.

And of course there's JoJo's.  Always awesome!

I really wanted to see things go crazy in the finale of Jormungand, but I still enjoyed the second season [thought it was better overall than the first].

And Pyscho-Pass is good stuff, nice to see a dark series with slightly older characters [and the return of characters that are police officers!, been a while since I've seen that in anime]. Mid-season finale was pretty brutal, really looking forward to how things go in the second half.

I've been watching another contemporary classic: Golden Boy.

It basically puts all the modern fan service shows to absolute shame. Nice animation, good sense of humor, a main character that isn't some blank slate, and female characters that aren't children [or relatives of the main character]. It mainly works because it's actually funny, a concept that modern shows can't seem to grasp. And the OP is absolute money:

There's a few shows I'l watch, just because I'm a masochist and enjoy inflicting terrible anime on myself for no reason.

But I've also got a ton of 80's/early 90's OVAs and movies sitting in my backlog, so I'll probably tear through those, too.

Edit: I am really interested to see how the new Monkey Punch anime [that looks like Samurai Champloo with Lupin III characters] turns out.
