and the incest

I am starting to miss the time I thought this was just too much of a teenage boy's fantasy.

So lately I've been absolutely hooked on Steins;Gate... really love the self-referential stuff in it and of course the time-travel, sci-fi stuff. Any other recommendations for similar anime?

Also I picked up Haibane Renmei a while back but haven't sat down and watched it yet... you guys thoughts? Worth watching?

I actually don't really watch anime too often and am not too familiar with a lot of it. But I do like it (of course).

Probably one of the top 10 anime series from the 00's. Lots of imagination, lots of hearts, and it earns the right to be dramatic when it wants to. It's also the kind of anime that you can recommend to people without feeling ashamed of yourself.

Maoyu - Episode 01

Human and demons are fighting a war. The hero goes off to fight the demon king to end the war. The demon king is actually a hot babe. Turns out that both sides are engaged in a lot of war profiteering [JUST LIKE REAL LIFE ZOMG]. The demon king proposes that she and the hero work to end the war together.

Well, that's pretty much all that happens in episode one. However, it's clear that the show's going to get involved in a lot of political and economic stuff along the way towards an eventual peace, there may also be hijinks and fanservice. It's got the same writer and director as Spice and Wolf, so if you've seen that you have an idea of what you're getting into.

Okay, since we're also talking movies here:

-Summer Wars
-Eve no Jikan/Time of Eve
-The Secret World of Arriety
-Trigun: Badlands Rumble [not necessarily a great movie on its own, but it's great for fans of the series]
-Berserk movie trilogy [only the first two have been released, though]
-Mardock Scramble movie trilogy [only the first two have been released, though]

yeah, new Hunter x Hunter's Green Island is already much better than the old one.

It's still funny how much thought was put into the Green Island game.  Normally entire series would be based around the concept (.hack, yugioh, etc.) but here it's just a small part of the bigger world.

Shit looking faces during fast animated scenes and generic story and characters. Can't count how many times I have seen the protagonist's plain looking face in animu.

Diebuster already got a US video release. Even the Gattai movie got a Blu Ray release. So did Gunbuster and it's dvd release is pretty fantastic, probably one of the best looking DvDs I've ever seen.

But since I don't own the ova version and discotek's release should be pretty cheap, I may just buy this.

Chie the Brat

A pre-Ghibli movie from Isao Takahat. It's got a lot of his hallmarks here, including the focus on every day life [like in My Neighbors the Yamadas]. It's a fun and lively movie with a main character who's easy to root for, especially against her numskull father. It's a bit too episodic for its own good and the ending feels a bit out of place given the main narrative drive throughout most of the rest of the movie. Nevertheless, it's fun and rarely boring, so you could certainly do worse.

Like the Clouds, Like the Wind

Another almost-Ghibli movie, since it features character designs from long-time Ghibli collaborator Katsuya Kondou. The problems here are two fold: it tries to fit too much story and character development into too little time and it has a real problem with establishing the right tone [shifting rapidly between lighthearted fun and serious drama, sometimes within the same scene]. I do appreciate what it was going for, though, and it was far more engaging than I really expected it to be at the outset [intended on watching just a bit of it tonight but wound up watching the whole thing]. With a bit more time and tight direction, it really could have been a great little movie. As it is, it'll have to settle for just being pretty good.

Since it's been long enough ago, I'm feeling like going on a 90's nostalgic kick for a while. That, and I've pretty much drained the 80's well dry already. Recommend me some awesome 90's anime, like really obscure stuff that I've probably never heard of before. Stuff like Golden Boy [which I'm watching right now] or the Future GPX Cyber Formula franchise [which I'm also watching right now], but obviously not those in particular.

Green Island is great in the manga.  Problem with the anime was it was catching up to the manga, and Togashi was sick/lazy and his scribbles weren't getting scribbled fast enough.  The pace, direction, animation, and everything suffered for it.  Now they don't have that problem and can do the storyline right.  Well, as good as the new series can do it.

The original anime was the best until the very end of the york shin arc.  It wasn't like a steady decline in quality; just one huge drop and it stayed at mediocrity from there.
