Goku goes super saiyan for the very first time on DBZ Kai tonight. Now I know some may be "lol dbz" but it's a pretty hype moment that I haven't seen in so many years, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

The scene where(I'm actually hesitant to spoiler anything from Dragon Ball Z because it's rather popular and many have seen it already) Vegeta died was really nice, with him telling Goku about their people and what Freiza did, it was surprisingly emotional.

I've realized woobies are my version of waifus. I want to have woobie wars. :doge

Anyways the tropes link is obviously where I went first but I have no idea the quality of the anime or the prominence of the woobie in the plot, hence my inquiry.

Of those on the list that I watched:

Full-Metal Alchemist is great. I only read the manga, but I know the anime is well liked too. There are quite a few gut-punch moments in this one.

Grave of the Fireflies, if you feel like you haven't cried enough lately.

Gurren Lagann is a fun show, because drill power. The way it works is Simon (or Shimon) and friends get shit on, but they prevail through force of will. Great animation too.

Kaiji, if you can get over the artstyle. Ludicrous, but fun enough if you're into suspense and let yourself be bamboozled by the piling on of nonsense. The release is always accompanied by tears. So many tears.

One Piece is probably a safe bet. Though you should probably just read the manga. We have a dedicated thread here.

I couldn't get into it myself. Shonen'd out, I guess.

Vinland Saga, though there's only a manga so far. There's a timeskip where the tone changes quite a bit.

Gundam Tekketsu's been really, really freaking solid so far.  Getting non-Gundam staffers to make a Gundam show seems to be paying off as the show is very human with good characters and character development.  Battles are nice and semi-realistic as well.  It's really making its way to potentially be one of the best Gundam shows if it doesn't completely fall apart at some point.

Started watching Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I already watched the 2003 version and enjoyed it for the most part. But FMA:B is SO much better so far. Only about 3 or 4 episodes in so we'll have to see but I much prefer this.

The homunculi in general are better developed in 2003, mix and match fuckery between names and original ones aside. They feel like a more serious treat than disposable henchmen, although Wrath and Greed in Brotherhood are fantastic.

I honestly wish we could have had a mix of the two. The first half of Brotherhood kind of assumes that you already saw the 2003 series so it skims along at a super fast pace and doesn't really carry the weight of events of characters like Nina and Hughes. Can't even just watch the first half of 2003 and then swap to Brotherhood due to inconsistencies like Marco and Scar.  :'(

I might start rewatching the 2003 version again. Watched the first couple of episodes a few weeks ago.

One thing about Brotherhood I didn't like is that they didn't get into the Ishval War too deep.

Started watching Iron Blooded Orphans and I don't need to wait for that erection anymore. This series is good. So far.

Oh god, I'm rewatching Slayers and I'm enjoying it more than I expected. I wondered whether it was right for me to rate Slayers Next higher.
Then I remembered the ep where Lina can't use any magic 'cause she's on her period. :snoop
I love Slayers, but Season 1 blatantly does the same story arc twice. :duh Next is clearly the goat of the original three seasons. Try ain't bad but it's kind of hard to believe anything is a remotely viable threat to Lina considering the shit she and the rest of her crew pulled off at the end of Next. As for me I still haven't viewed Evolution-R yet. :o I should do a marathon week of it all sometime. :hyper

Is this like when the people who made Noir went on to make Madlax which was the same show down to the DVD packaging? Champloo reused Spike's design from Bebop but it was still its own series. Those character designs have a bit of a retro 80s/early 90 vibe to them so that new series MIGHT be okay

The first 2016 issue of Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine (cover shown right) is announcing on Friday that a new anime adaptation project of Kentarou Miura's Berserk manga has been green-lit. NBC Universal will unveil the anime's first promotional video at its winter Comiket booth, which will run from December 29-31. The announcement did not note the format of the anime (TV, film, OAV, etc.).

Miura comments in the magazine that the anime project will depict Guts in his "Black Swordsman" appearance, which is only revealed in parts of the manga that go beyond any previously animated Berserk story, and is only briefly hinted at in the first and last episode of the 1997 television anime series.'

Gundam Tekketsu's still really good at the finish of the first quarter ep13.  Does a nice job throwing off a lot of tropes even though it occasionally still has some weird JAPAN stuff out of nowhere.  Gonna be depressing as fuck when some of these people die.

We've got:

Gundam The Origin
Gundam Orphans
Gundam Thunderbolt

Is this correct?

If you haven't watched in years there's also:

Gundam Build Fighters
Gundam Build Fighters Try
G Reco
and maybe even Gundam Unicorn if you never finished it.

Thunderbolt & Origin are OAVs still running, so you can watch them or hold off until they finish.
Iron Blood Orphans is great, get on that.  Hopefully it doesn't have the Sunrise "turns-to-shit-in-the-2nd-half" curse.
Build Fighters S1 is episodic, fight of the day pacing, but the 2nd half is pretty good with some great battles.  Worth a watch.
I heard Try is bad, haven't seen it yet.
G Reco is love/hate depending on how big of a crazy Tomino fan you are, it's absolutely gorgeous though in art/animation/music.
Unicorn is nonsense story-wise, but it looks amazing and is epic and worth watching especially in that last ep.  It's like the 0083/CCA of the modern day Gundam.

Errrrr, I hope you don't mean from an art perspective.  Because the art by the Eureka 7 guy is really nice.  Also when I say crazy Tomino fan, I should clarify that, you will love G Reco if you are a fan of modern crazy HAPPY Tomino like Overman King Gainer.  If you can watch Brain Powerd and enjoy it, you'll love G Reco.  It has a lot more in common with those two and Turn A than it does with any of his old-school Gundam shows.

I'm probably the only person in the world who really enjoyed Gundam Age.

Yeah, you are.  AGE2 was watchable, but not good.  AGE1 was boring, AGE3 was boring & pointless.  After replaying through AGE3's story in Super Robot Wars BX just recently, it refreshed how plodding and dumb AGE3 is.

I think I said this before, but if you are an artist and interested in breaking into animation, watch Ghost in the Shell and copy the backgrounds via painting. Just straight up try to replicate them. Do the same background over and over. Try to get as close to the real thing as possible.

Notice the framing of the camera in the backgrounds, and then go to a local city or a local place that has a similar amount of detail. Take a picture in HD. Then paint that photo you took GitS background style.

Add to portfolio.

GitS is excellent for learning or even appreciating mastery of fine animation details, from backgrounds to direction.

I can't think of a piece of animation with as detailed bgs as GitS. The GOAT.

GOAT.
