I heard a lot of good things about SSSV, but I never got around to playing it for myself.

Turok with cheats was bad ass. Mini gun, tek arrows, that big ass red explosion gun, putting it in the weird black and white wire frame mode and beating the game so when he ran in that cut scene his loin cloth looked like a dong... So good

Edit: it was pen and ink mode actually that made it look like a dong

Holy shit... speed garage in an N64 game! I never heard of this game before but this is hilarious. I like the d&b style MC and how the bassline sounds like Ripgroove:

I always heard so many good things about Space Station Silicon Valley but it wasn't until early last year that I got to play it and I was a little disappointed. don't get me wrong it's a really fun game, I guess I just expect more scope when instead it's these rather compact levels with straightforward tasks to complete; like the missions in a GTA game chopped up in to discrete levels.

when I got a hold of Body Harvest, a game that I'd heard much less acclaim for, I was way more impressed. In many ways that game has mechanics that are superior to its spiritual successor, GTA3 (such as the more intuitive in-vehicle shooting; multiple, complex interiors; several unique continents) on a system much weaker than the PS2. I'm glad you name-drop David Jones, though, who has to be one of the saddest people in the games industry. bullied out of a developer whose success he had an integral role in, it's clear that he's a mastermind when it comes to designing open-world games, but his magnum opus APB was a commercial failure and it doesn't seem like he'll ever come back to the industry after that.

it's also kinda sad that Nintendo terminated their 3-game deal after Silicon Valley for whatever reason.

EDIT: I just read that David Jones was working on a Facebook game in 2012 :fbm

Was David jones really bullied out of rock star? Story is, one group thought that gta should go into 3d, the other group thought it didn't. The group that thought it should won out. That's what will happen when people disagree about the future trajectory of a company. Which sucks, it really was time. As for Jones in general, I'm surprised he was not later rehired by rockstar. He'd be a valuable asset with some his forward thinking.

I actually do own Body Harvest and was meaning to play it. I did SSSV first since it serves as a good precursor to Body Harvest which was became a huge influence on GTA. Plus the backstory for that game is more interesting which is why I introduced it in the post. I never played the game so I'm really looking forward to it.

In other new I'm pretty sure I have the Norovirus. I'm bed ridden so I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to post impressions today. I'll try to write something then do a proper post tomorrow morning.

I could definitely see a DJ putting that on at some happening nightclub.

As a "clubber" myself, I concur.

The N64 had the capability of portraying fantastic club style tunes. Case in point:

I could have just posted the entire Extreme G soundtrack, though, since it's uniformly awesome.

My darling slime unfortunately has the Noroaids, peeing out his butthole. So he probably won't be able to make a new listing tonight. Maybe tomorrow? Unsure.

Sorry if you were looking forward to the fun.

Thank you, sorry about that!

I guess I'll spoil the game coverage since I was sick and couldn't get to it and I'm going on a short vacation tomorrow:

Friday - Superman
Saturday - Hybrid Heaven
Sunday - Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine

I'll definitely get to writing about them when I get back though. :derp

fuuuuck Hybrid Heaven :lawd one of my first game ideas was to make a spiritual successor to that. the combat has such a kickass concept behind it (like a simpler, hand-to-hand version of Vagrant Story's combat) and the music is rad as hell. I wish so badly that the rest of the game outside of the fights was any good at all, but it's actually offensively awful :fbm I still love the intro tho

there's also this incomplete fanart I did a couple years ago of an early scene that I will never, ever forget

now that I think about it I should redo it for funsies

Hybrid Heaven was pretty boss, but a lot of it was also pretty terrible, like you said, Raban. I wish Konami could have revisited it a few years later in the next generation.

HH's gameplay is a tedious mess, but its aesthetics and story are actually pretty good.  The concept of turn based fighting could use another spin as well.

also, sci-fi/JRPG's sure are rare, especially ones that dont star moe sorts.  If you asked me 15 years ago if I'd think that Hybrid Heaven would look any better with age I would have laughed at you, now that the sort of creativity (not all of it successful) it showed has been bred out of J-development and Konami especially, well...

I'd like to see more ambitious games that dont quite nail it all (Alpha Protocol) then fully competent but dreadfully soulless husks of triple A gaming that are the norm now.  I guess that means I want more games like Hybrid Heaven on the shelf (goes back to playing EDF).

Read through the great write-ups and then was hoping for a Hybrid Heaven entry... :)

I've always wanted to play it but that first stanza felt like a turn-based PN 03 (not an insult entirely)

Man. I'd forgotten how many awesome games the N64 managed to get despite being a terrible piece of crap hardware-wise.
