shame we'll never get to see decent transfers for a lot of this stuff from that era. I read somewhere that Japan was particularly notorious about destroying negatives and shit from that era (and earlier). So unless ppl from the production preserved stuff alot of classics are stuck in early dvd/vhs quality forever.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of older anime, especially a lot of obscure OVAs, simply don't exist in a format where a Bluray version would offer any improvement. However, AnimEigo has been doing some Kickstarters to do Bluray releases of some older shows [Bubblegum Crisis, Riding Bean, and Otaku no Video so far] and they've all turned out really well.
