 :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

I didn't watch the web episodes since the director's cut movie version was coming out just a few months later and I just watched the movie and outside of few questionable parts and the overall fast rushed pace since limited time, holy fuck that was great!!  The music, the action, the moral grey area every character.  Super bleak modern day chaotic 0080 re-imagined.  Wow!!

Jesus christ it bums me out how bad CG Berserk is. Like it bugs me more than animu trash ever should.

It's just so bad. Even the clearly low-budget animation in the original Berserk anime is preferable.

I think I'm the only person who is enjoying the hell out of Berserk.  It's trashy adaptation, but it's super entertaining re-experiencing the manga story at breakneck speed.  My only complaint is that halfway through the 12 ep show we're not getting that far.  Really wanted to see Trolls, and Millenium Falcon.  But we'd need at least 24-36 eps to get there even at this speed.

Yeah it's really ugly, but I have low standards when I like the story/characters.  I've watched some ugly as shit anime like Moonlight Mile because the story is engaging.  Otoh, I can't watch gorgeous animation that's slice of life because it bores the hell out of me.

Although I have to admit this adaptation is really playing up the perverted stuff (yet no nipples; weird contrast) which is cringe.  Ep6 has literally animated vaginal ejaculation yet somewhat censors snake penis.  But what I actually get out of Berserk 2016 is that it would fit really well, more than any other anime, on HBO, Starz, or Cinemax.  It's a cool story surrounded by sex & violence porn.  Perfect for cable USA TV.

My favorite use of 3DCG in a primarily 2D show that I've seen was in Penguindrum, where the places they used it seemed to specifically use the lo-fi 3DCG aesthetic for an incongruous mechanistic feeling.

Finally finished my rewatch of Evangelion after getting the idea in recursive's separate thread. Watched all 26 TV eps, and the 25-26 from EoE which I hadn't seen before (I watched all the TV eps on second-gen copied VHS tapes in the late 90:s).

Gotta say I was a bit disappointed by EoE after all the hype from the internets. I get that people love ep 25 because of all the action scenes, but the altered animation style doesn't look as good somehow. I liked the TV ending better, I think.

Rewatched Gundam Thunderbolt with a friend whose sometimes into anime, but generally avoids it.  They liked it a good deal.  Then since I was in the Gundam re-watching mood, I rewatched Unicorn ep7 again, skipping around a bit.  Still full of nonsense jedi magic overload, but still amazingly entertaining.  I kinda respect how Unicorn takes the newtype thing 8000% with a straight face by the end.  It's the most Japanese star wars anime ever.

Gonna finish up Iron Blood Orphans S1 tomorrow.  Have 3 eps left and it's fun even if I think it's not quite as good as the first 10eps which were nothing but great.
One day I'll finally catch up on Gundam anime.  Still gotta watch Build Fighters Try and V Gundam and The Origin as well as finishing up G Reco.  I like that the franchise is alive enough with consistent releases that it's actually pretty tough to catch up.  Means there's always some new Gundam to watch.

Finished Iron-Blood Orphans S1.  Not sure what to think.  Was a weird final arc.  I have no idea what S2 is going to be about, but it's really going to be up to S2 to determine the quality of the show as a Gundam show.  Unlike a lot of S1/S2 splits, this one doesn't feel self-contained at all.  More detailed spoiler thoughts below:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
ok finished
that was such a weird show
like OO S1 was a lot stronger in the end, but IBO had a really good start
it's just sort of...I'm not sure where it's going
so instead of S1 feeling satisfyingly conclusive
it's just sort of...."well, I have NO IDEA what S2 is going to be about, so I hope it's good!"
ep24 got weird.  The timeskip where they go from the train into the city to it's been days and there at a standstill in fighting with the city and gjallahorn
Then Ein super mech comes and kills 3 named characters in a row which is pretty overkill and brutal
Then Mikazuki is put in a situation where he simply cannot win vs the 2 gundams
but then Evil Char saves him because it's all planned
and oh yeah Carta woman died at the end of ep23 but it was done so poorly it didn't even seem like it
and then ep25 Mikazuki literally cannot win
against Ein mech
like all the good strategies in the show in the first half
where Tekkaden is underpowered but they win because they take gambles and have good strategies
which is the best type of gundam fights
good strategies
but Mika vs Ein is like Ein has better Alawhatever system so he's power 9000 and Mika's Ala system is only power 8000 so Mika can only beat Power 7999 or below enemies
and then Mika wins by sacrificing more of his body to up his Alaration so he gets to power 9500 and then he's faster and kills Ein no problem
now the problem with this is that instead of being about battle strategy, it seems like they've established that whoever has the higher Alawhatever sync ratio is always stronger and will beat the other
so theoretically evil Char in S2 can just build a better sync mech than whatever sync Mika is at and be impossible for Mika to beat
it's sort of awkward weird system that I find really unsatisfying
like if Ein wasn't SO OVERPOWERED it wouldn't have seemed like everything is just based on who has the stronger sync ratio
I don't know if that was a good idea
also making it where everything is just a stage set by evil char is sort of takes the impact out of the final arcs in S1
like it's already been decided and schemed by evil char
it's not Tekkaden's own will and strength and strategy that is moving them forward like it was in the first 13 eps
I think once evil char came in the plot got kind of wierdly detached
like it's still solid and well done, but I felt like it was missing impact and I didn't care about the characters and what was going on enough
Also the characters haven't grown that much.  Like Mika really feels kind of weird characters arc right now.  In S2 is he basically going to keep sacrificing more and more of his humanity to become more machine sync and that's the wrong path and ultimately he'll have to go away from that?  Idk
And now that McGillis is in charge of reforming Gjallahorn, what's he going to do with it?  Is S2 going to be about a world war that erupts across Earth and the Colonies?  I really have no idea what S2 is going to be about
At least IBO S1 wasn't a mess, it's no Destiny or AGE or anything.  But I'd probably give it like 8/10 at this point whereas the first 10eps were like 9.5/10 really good gundam.  It's just sort of doing a show thing and we'll see if S2 gets to that epic amazing gundam finale feel that S1 didn't really have

Watched Thunderbolt Fantasy episode 1 aka the puppet show anime.  It's fun, and totally ridiculous.  I don't mind the puppets too much since the voice acting gets the emotion across, and the action is pretty good.  The violence is hilarious with people exploding and stuff.

Here's the order of release (which is not the chronological order, but it is the order you should watch them in). These are all on Crunchyroll.

1. Bakemonogatari
2. Nisemonogatari
3. Nekomonogatari: Black
4. Monogatari Second Season
5. Hanamonogatari (Episodes are listed under "Monogatari Second Season" on Crunchyroll)
6. Tsukimonogatari
7. Owarimonogatari

Also:
8. Koyomimonogatari (Web Series, not on Crunchyroll)
9. Kizumonogatari (Theatrical Film Trilogy, not available on Home Video yet)

Yes!

I can't say much for the sequels as all the ones I've seen have been kind of eh with occasional hilarious, but the first series is super stylish and funny (but very perverted, be warned).  Probably top20 anime for me.  Nisemonogatari was boring, Nekomonogatari was ok.  Next up is Monogatari 2nd Season for me.  Keep hoping some of the remaining series will reach the highs of Bakemonogatari.

I don't know if you've ever seen it but you can always watch the 1999 HxH series if you're pining for a fix. It's different sure, but it's still HxH. I've never seen it myself though and I'm almost positive it's not on CR,Hulu, etc, so you'd have to find it through other means.

But you get to see Gon,Killua and company again with glorious 90's cel animation.
