Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (commonly abbreviated to MGS4) is an upcoming stealth action video game in the popular Metal Gear series. Directed by Hideo Kojima, Shuyo Murata and Yoji Shinkawa, Guns of the Patriots is currently being developed by Kojima Productions exclusively[5] for the PlayStation 3 video game console. The game is being designed around the motto, "No Place to Hide!" and will be the last Metal Gear game developed by Hideo Kojima, and the last game in the series starring Solid Snake.[6] The game will be released worldwide on June 12, 2008, 10 years after the release of Metal Gear Solid and 20 years after the first Metal Gear.[7][8].

Gameplay
Old Snake aiming at mercenaries.
Old Snake aiming at mercenaries.

In Metal Gear Solid 4, the player Old Snake must navigate the game world in order to progress, using stealth and cunning in addition to traditional combat. It will use the series' traditional third person view with full camera manipulation, but also allows the freedom to play in first-person mode, as well as an over the shoulder view which can be switched from right shoulder to left for easy corner maneuvering. The Close Quarters Combat system will be completely revamped. The player will also be able to interrogate guards for information and supplies.

Several elements from previous titles return in modified forms. Players will also use a new form of camouflage called "Octocamo", which replaces the camouflage system featured in Metal Gear Solid 3. Dark blue when disabled, the Octocamo suit allows the wearer to blend in with any surface within a few seconds. A new monocular device called "Solid Eye" replaces the various binoculars and image intensifiers from previous titles, and a steel drum complements the series' traditional cardboard box disguise. It is able to deflect bullets, and can be rolled to knock enemy soldiers over, but can lead to Snake being sick should the player roll around too much.

According to Ryan Payton, the game will be filled with cut-scenes that explain what happened in previous MGS games and how that relates to the events of MGS4. Players will be able to choose whether to view these scenes by pressing the circle button on their controller when prompted. Although informative enough to excite the hardcore fans of the series, the cut scenes will be straight forward enough for casual players. Players will have the choice of watching the cut scenes from predetermined camera angles or exploring them with the Metal Gear Mk. II. [9]

Snake will also be partnered with a robotic drone, the Metal Gear Mk. II, which allows him to communicate with other characters, in addition to the CODEC radio system from previous games. It is also capable of engaging enemies using an electric shock, as well as providing reconnaissance.[10] This drone is reminiscent of Gillian Seed's robotic sidekick of the same name from another Hideo Kojima game Snatcher.

Due to the lack of a rumble feature (an important part in previous titles) from the PlayStation 3 during much of the development, the game had been designed with a new feature: a white "Threat Ring," that visibly vibrates when sound is made nearby.[11] As a series known for extensive use of rumble, when Sony announced the reintroduction of a new DualShock 3, MGS4 was announced as one of the first major games to make use of the force feedback capabilities.[12]

Snake's health will play some factor during gameplay. If injured on the battlefield, cuts and burns will remain on his skin. However, the developers wish to avoid putting the stress of Snake's health to the players, so he wears a muscle suit, allowing players to move in a similar fashion to previous games.[13]

Snake will have two new meters that replace the stamina bar from Snake Eater. The first meter, "Stress", is based on current fighting and climate conditions. This can cause Snake to go into a "combat high",[14] that increases his accuracy and reduces damage sustained. However this effect will eventually wear off and could cause Snake to momentarily collapse. Smoking a cigarette calms Snake down.[14] The second meter, "Psyche", slowly drops over time reducing Snake's accuracy. Scanning the pages of a glamor magazine will increase the meter.[14]

There is also a "Baseline Map" which is a radar map with a dynamic circle based on Snake's "presence" to the environment.[11] Accessible through the main menu, the Virtual Range is a test facility that allows the player to access the game's library of weapons as well as practice Snake's CQC moves.[14]

In the May 2008 issue of EDGE magazine, Kojima expressed dissatisfaction with the final game, citing the game's graphics and his inability to realize his early vision.[14] Kojima later clarified his remarks, stating that he was "very satisfied" with the final game and that his initial comments were sensationalized and mistranslated.[15]

Set in 2014, five years after the "Big Shell Incident" (the events of the Plant chapter from Metal Gear Solid 2), Metal Gear Solid 4 portrays a world where the restriction of military intervention on foreign soil has been eased, fueling the need for private military companies (PMCs) to fight proxy wars for business purposes. Nanotechnology has become prominent, both to enhance the capabilities and enforce the loyalty of mercenaries. The nanos that are in the PMCs are called "Sons of the Patriots" or "SOP". The five largest of these PMCs (Which are named Praying Mantis, Otselotovaya Khvatka, Werewolf, Pieuvre Armement and Raven Sword) are owned by a single mother company named Outer Haven, which is operated by Liquid Ocelot. Amassing an army whose manpower rivals that of the United States, Liquid prepares to launch an armed insurrection by taking control of SOP. Liquid will have the power to control all of the PMCs. With the world once again in crisis, a rapidly aging and disillusioned Solid Snake is deployed into the Middle East by Roy Campbell to terminate Liquid. Guns of the Patriots will take place in five locations, Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe. It will also including Shadow Moses from Metal Gear Solid.[16]

Development

Hideo Kojima announced that he would be retiring as director of the Metal Gear series after Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and would leave his position open to another person for Metal Gear Solid 4, as he had announced he would after Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.[citation needed] As a joke, the new director was announced as "Alan Smithee", but in R, a 400-page book bundled with Metal Gear Solid 3's Japanese "Premium Package", the director was revealed to be Shuyo Murata, co-writer of MGS3 and director of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. He has also contributed humorous easter eggs to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. However, it was announced that Kojima will be co-directing the game with Murata after substantial negative fan reaction, including death threats.[17]

The title has been described as "essentially finished" since January 2008, and is currently entering extensive beta testing.[18] As of April, a team of American and European journalists are the only individuals outside Konami to have played the game through its entirety, and have provided feedback to the development team.[19]

At Destination PlayStation on February 26, 2008, Sony announced that MGS4 would be released worldwide on June 12, 2008, along with the special MGS4 PlayStation 3 bundle.[20]

Guns of the Patriots is the first PS3 game that uses a full 50GB dual layer Blu-ray Disc through extensive efforts in data compression.[21]

In the May 2008 issue of EDGE magazine, Kojima has expressed disappointment in the final result of the game's graphics and his inability to realize his early vision. Kojima says, "But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today ... we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit, actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered."[14] However, Kojima has more recently stated that he is "very satisfied" with the final game and that he never said anything critical of the PS3 in the first place, citing mistranslation by Western media for the purpose of sensationalism for his previous 'remarks'.[22]

Characters and voice cast

Many of the Japanese voice cast from Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will be returning to reprise their roles in Guns of the Patriots, with the notable exception of Kōji Totani, the voice of Revolver Ocelot, who died in February 2006.[23] Totani will be replaced by Liquid Snake's Japanese voice actor Banjō Ginga. Houko Kuwashima and Kikuko Inoue will reprise the roles of Mei Ling and Rosemary respectively for the game,[24][25][26] Inoue will also voice a new character, Sunny, the daughter of Olga Gurlukovich. Japanese film director Shinya Tsukamoto will provide the Japanese voice for Vamp, replacing original actor Ryotaro Okiayu. An elderly EVA (who appears under the identity of Big Mama), from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, will also appear, and her voice will be provided by singer Mari Natsuki.[27][28]

English voice acting work is being recorded in tandem under voice-director Kris Zimmerman.[29] David Hayter returns as Solid Snake, with Quinton Flynn (Raiden), Paul Eiding (Roy Campbell), Christopher Randolph (Otacon), Debi Mae West (Meryl Silverburgh), Jennifer Hale (Naomi Hunter), and Phil LaMarr (Vamp) all reprising their roles from previous titles. The role of EVA will be voiced by actress Lee Meriwether.[30] Cam Clarke, who performed the voice of Liquid Snake in the first two Metal Gear Solid games, will not be a part of the Metal Gear Solid 4 cast. The role of Liquid Ocelot was given to Patric Zimmerman, the voice of Revolver Ocelot. Kris Zimmerman, denying allegations of nepotism, has clarified that Kojima always intended for the character to use Ocelot's voice.[31]The character of Rosemary, played by Lara Cody in MGS2, will be played by Jennifer Hale in MGS4.[32] Ryan Payton has stated that due to lack of space that there will be no option to switch audio to different languages.[33]

Other new characters include Drebin, a self-styled "arms launderer" (notably voiced in Japanese by Keiji Fujiwara, the Japanese voice of Sigint in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) whose Stryker will act as the in-game store.[14]; "Little Gray", a small, shaven, shorts-wearing monkey who appears to follow Drebin; a new FOXHOUND team under the command of Meryl Silverburgh; and the Beauty and the Beast Unit.

The four members of FOXHOUND, also known as "Rat Patrol Team"[14], are sent to investigate PMC activity. The team includes Meryl Silverburgh; Ed, Meryl's second-in-command; Jonathan, a hulking soldier; and Johnny Sasaki, also known as "Akiba", the team's electronics expert. Meryl, Ed, and Jonathan use the SOP (Sons Of the Patriots)[34] system to share each other's senses via the nanomachine network inside their bodies. Meryl states that they are investigating PMC activity for the US Army CID. Ed and Jonathan are named after Ed Brown and Jonathan Ingram, the main characters of Hideo Kojima's Policenauts, from which Meryl also originally gained her name.

Four new bosses are also debuting in Guns of the Patriots: Crying Wolf, Raging Raven, Screaming Mantis, and Laughing Octopus, all members of The Beauty and the Beast Corps. Their animal names openly reference characters from Metal Gear Solid's FOXHOUND unit, and the emotions relating to the Cobra Unit from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. A close inspection of Screaming Mantis reveals two marionettes of previous MGS bosses: Psycho Mantis and The Sorrow, both of whom were psychics. All four of them are women who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. The only way they can cope with the damage done to their minds is to become war machines. Their inner appearance is referred to as "Beauty", while their outer appearance is referred to as "Beast". Four real-life models were chosen for their in-game appearances as their "Beauty" side: Lyndall Jarvis, Scarlett Chorvat, Mieko Rye, and Yumi Kikuchi. The English dubbing for the characters is done by having the female voice actors perform the lines while Fred Tatasciore overdubs on top of the female voices, creating a split-voice effect for the characters.[35]

Soundtrack

Main article: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (soundtrack)

The score to Metal Gear Solid 4 is being led by Harry Gregson-Williams, his third Metal Gear Solid soundtrack,[38] and Nobuko Toda, who provided music for Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Acid 2.[39] Directed by Norihiko Hibino, GEM Impact employees Yoshitaka Suzuki and Takahiro Izutani also made compositions late in the game's production.[40] Other contributors are Konami employees Shuichi Kobori, Kazuma Jinnouchi, Akihiro Honda, and Sota Fujimori.[41]

There are two vocal themes for the game. The opening theme, "Love Theme", is sung by Jackie Presti and composed by Nobuko Toda. The ending theme, "Here's To You", is sung by Lisbeth Scott. Before the release of the game, "MGS4 - Theme of Love - Smash Bros. Brawl Version" was provided for Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the Shadow Moses Island level.[42]

The official soundtrack was released on May 28, 2008 by Konami Digital Entertainment under the catalog number GFCA-98/9.[43] It is comprised of two discs of music and 47 tracks. A soundtrack album will also be packaged with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition.[44]

Marketing

At a press conference on May 13, 2008, Hideo Kojima announced a marketing campaign and agreements with several companies to promote the game. An Apple iPod is an in-game item that Snake can use to change the background music, and collect hidden songs scattered throughout the game. ReGain Energy Drinks are used in the game as a stamina booster, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones are used.[45]

Konami and Ubisoft put an unlockable costume in the game for Snake, Altaïr from the Ubisoft stealth game Assassin's Creed. Initially revealed on April Fool's Day 2008, Kojima later announced that it would actually be in the game, unlockable by doing "something special".[46]

In North America, a bundle containing an 80GB PlayStation 3, a DualShock 3 wireless controller, a downloadable game coupon from PSN and a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be released for US$499 to coincide with the release of the standalone edition.[49] Japan will see the release of the Guns of the Patriots Welcome Box that contains the game itself, a DualShock 3 controller, and a 40GB PS3 in either black, white or silver.[50]

Sony has also announced a limited editon pre-order bundle containing Guns of the Patriots, a Blu-ray video disc and a matte grey (officially titled Gunmetal Grey) 40GB PlayStation 3. First announced in Japan on March 18, 2008 at a cost of ¥51,800[51] the bundle sold out within six days from March 20 to March 25.[52] An identical bundle was available in North America for pre-order on May 19, 2008 in "very limited" supply for US$600 at Konami's official website.[53]

Metal Gear Online

    Main article: Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Online is the online component of Metal Gear Solid 4. The game will feature 16-player online stealth battles, encouraging players to engage heavily in teamwork. MGO will be distributed with MGS4 in the form of a starter pack, which will be expanded through downloadable content via the PlayStation Network, potentially for up to 10 years.[54]

The game was in beta testing in Japan from August 20 to September 3, 2007.[55] Around 3,000 people joined the test sessions. US and Canadian customers who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4 in April will be also included in a further beta test which was due to begin on April 21, 2008, however due to many technical dificulties including a server overload, it was postponed to April 25, 2008 and continued until May 11, 2008, promptly shutting down at midnight PST until its return on June 12 for the world-wide release of MGS4.[7] The beta package obtained from pre-ordering the game also includes a documentary DVD titled "Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2" with an "invite code" inside. A beta was also scheduled to be opened in Europe.[56] On April 11, 2008, Konami announced an open Metal Gear Online beta for Europe and that it would be available for download from April 26 and would be entirely open to everyone who downloaded it until May 11.[57]

Reception

So far, Metal Gear Solid 4 has received only positive reviews. It has been praised for its innovative gameplay design and provocative storyline - The first review being a 10 out of 10 from PlayStation Official Magazine (UK), commenting Metal Gear Solid 4 "shifts gears constantly, innovating again and again".[58] The game has been awarded 5/5 from the Official US PlayStation 3 Magazine and 10/10 from the PSM Italy magazine ".[59][60]. MGS4 has also received a 9.9/10 from UK IGN.

It's been getting pretty good reviews so far, eh? Not surprising, I guess, as MGS3 was quite well received. Didn't keep it from sucking balls though.  :(

Exactly what impact will MGS4 have on the industry that is "nothing short of tectonic"? I haven't been keeping track of MGS4 development that closely, so I guess I've missed whatever is it that's supposed to make people say "Wow, nothing like this has ever been done before. This will change everything!"

That's what we're supposed to find out then, isn't it? For all my dislike of this series, I have no problem believing that Kojima and the gang might raise the bar in quite a few areas here.

Who would be stupid enough to take things from MGS4. MGS4 has nothing worth stealing, unless you want to make a game about the color green. Gears will have more of an impact on this gen. It made cover systems almost standard.

Emo/femmy characters, tons of CG, tons of ellipses, ...and so on.

But seriously though, like it or hate it, RPGs did become a lot more mainstream (at least in the US) after Final Fantasy VII. A whole generation of gamers grew up fawning over it.

I'm that person but its more based in the popcorn entertainment I derive from the games than "Holy shit this is the best story ever. Games as art.  :bow2"

Gawd damnit I love this board. Ripping MGS is heresy on GAF.

I hate that fucking series. Most overrated in the history of gaming. When Shane talks about it on 1up Yours I want to slam my Zune to the ground.
we're just joking

we all aknowledge that mgs3 is one of the most enjoyable games from the last generation. the only type of people who would say otherwise are criminals, and not the cool kind of criminal that eat people either, but the ones that diddle children and small animals while deficating on themselves.

I loathed FFVII, but I can't deny its influence on story-telling, presentation, and cinematics on games of the PS1 era. It might have started with FFIV/FFVI, but Square raised the standards a fair bit higher with FFVII.

Too bad the game's absolute shit now, though.

A whole generation of gamers grew up fawning over it.

A bunch of noobs. My first RPG was Final Fantasy 8, aka the SUPERIOR of the two.

Oh wow. FF8 was your first RPG so it's the best and that's why 7 sucks. Nice one idiot.

FF7 kicked ass, the MGS series were great (especially the first one), and I have faith that Kojima made a fantastic follow-up to the series. It's easily my most wanted PS3 game and I am almost assuredly gonna use my economic stimulus check on a Triple and the game.

More predictably, the GTA 4 spectacle has received nearly no attention here. Leave it to the PS3 exclusive to get the debate rolling on Evilbore.

I can't wait for the game, but a 5/5 in Gamepro is just as good as a 5/5 in Maxim.

Personally, I can't find much reason to respect, let alone put faith in, reviews from any current magazine or site. Gamepro seems no more or less credible than people from any other magazine, which is to say that the magazine seems rather not credible. If they aren't on the take, they are fanboys who revel in this shred of power, likely the first such encountered in their comical lives, that their little buyer's guides ego pieces award them. And more often than not, reviewers are as prone to getting onboard the hype- or hate-trains as their readers. And then you have the odd site that publishes blatantly false information, which really shits on the buyer's guide concept.

Common to all types is that they stupidly venture into commenting on features that they are most certainly not fit or trained to really comment on. It's popular to say that the increased sophistication of technology and game design has made this or that developer fall behind, but it should probably be said more often of game critics. Multiple textures, eh, Duhglass C Perry?

I love MGS, but gameplay wise the series has always been very clunky.  Remember the chore it was to change camo in MGS3?  I really hope they streamline the controls, but the MGO beta controls, which are apparently identical to MGS4, were awkward.  Nevertheless, I'm really looking to forward to this game.

There are primarily three things that has made MGS inaccessible for me. First and foremost, it's too self-referential and communicates far too much awareness of that it is, in fact, a game. The camouflage stuff in MGS3, while appreciated by apparently lots of people, felt like such a gamey thing that I actually stopped myself from changing my outfit, at least within a single environment. Second, the gameplay just doesn't feel right, and if MGO is any indication, that hasn't improved much. For all his CQC moves, it just doesn't mesh. Compared to Splinter Cell, Sam's hand to hand combat ineptitude be damned, it feels unnatural.

And then you have the fucking story, and the miserable story telling. I can deal with bizarre, if the storytelling is there. Which in the case of MGS, it just plain isn't. And having suffered through about 50% of The Twilight Princess, I'm starting to think that it's a problem with Japanese storytelling in general, and that fans of the MGS story are all-out or closet Japfags who have slogged through basic training in deciphering shit storytelling just so that they can enjoy idiotic stories as they were meant to be enjoyed.

You're right, he's out there, which only proves that the whole site didn't undergo the radical shift you're trying to call it out on.

Everyone knew the GTA reviews were hype-fueled and dev-influence-fueled, and it's been repeated ad nauseum. MGS4 has gotten off easy compared to GTA.

"It's hideous"
"It's  blurry"
"It's an HD PS2 game"
"Stiff archaic gameplay"
"Totally broken and dull to play"
"No end to cutscenes"
"story and characters suck shit"
"10/10 WTF this game is a total piece of shit with no redeeming value"
"#1 on gamerankings? look at all the Take Two ads"

Common GTA comments. Common MGS comments.

AA, what you need to understand is that this isn't GAF. If someone here trolls Sony, i'd say 80% of it is mockingly. On GAF, people like Mabuza actually have an unhealthy love for sony, and they're not just fucking around when they troll anything on the 360 and worship anything on the PS3.

I've seen quite a bit of MS complaining on these boards too.

Well, quite a few of the people who are regularly griped about for their supposed hard-headed Sony fandom view message boards as "ARGs", and play their characters. Sort of like a shitload of people who post here, and as with any designed character, the one-sidedness wears thin. Which pushes them to go all in and really become the psycho barnacleheads they have been playing, chill a bit, or spread the love hate evenly.

People should be more like me, really.

Meh, I've seen more decent game discussion go on here than on most other boards. "Serious" really is relative. NeoGAF certainly allows one to seriously discuss if Liquids arm gives Ocelot superior masturbation powers, that doesn't make it good discussion. If you can look past the characters a bit (and ignore some), this place is alright.

And where else could one accuse an Xbox hater of being an Xbot spokesperson and get a serious response? It really doesn't get more serious than that.

Hmm, I personally think the ridiculous, over-the-top, meandering and confusing storylines are the best thing about the MGS series... truthfully though, only the second game had this... the first and the third game's plotline was mostly straightforward.

It was in regards to GTA4 because unlike Halo 3 and the like, which have bloated scores, this was getting perfect scores.  The discussion was about the general practice, though.

Point being, stop wah-wah'ing that folks here are irate that MGS4 seems to be getting the same treatment and the community stood idly by as GTA4 got perfect score after perfect score.  I dare say that GTA4 is probably less liked by the community at large than MGS4.

I thought it was established though that the reviews are generally not from a studio playthrough? Maybe it was just 1up, but none of the people who played it during the invitational event are actually reviewing the game, for that reason. I'm a huge Mgs fan.

But i can't help but smell BS on the impact that MGS4 might have on gaming, specially when what we see from MGS4, is a iteration in a big franchise that has suffered an impact from other games.

You see the gameplay, it's all influenced by other games. So i'm really, at least not right now, seeing the "whole impact" that MGS4 might have on gaming, and it all sounds like hyperbole Bs.

But i'm waiting to be surprised.

I think MGs1 had a big impact. It introduced stealth to consoles at least, i don't know when Thief came out.

And it was the 1st game that brought a new kind of entertainment to consoles at least, and i think gaming overall, with that i mean cinematic entertainment. It was the 1st game that made you feel you were inside a movie.

So yes, MGs1 in my opinion had a big impact on gaming. The rest of the Solid franchise hasn't though, and i fail to see how MGS4, a game changed to be like others, is gonna be any different.

I saw y2kev post the other day. drohne placed himself in a self imposed interweb exile, sadly.  :'(

Borys is the non-Xbox owning spokesperson for all of the xtards on Evilbore though.
Xbox killed PC gaming as we know it. I'll NEVER forgive Microsoft that.

What? Is that the reason you hate MS? Seriously?

well xbox killed pc gaming

and pc gaming is the best type of gaming

Admittedly, I haven't really ever paid too much attention on the PC side of things, but how exactly did they do that?

cos microsoft built the xbox as a watered down pc, which basically ruined the pc market

now the 360 is here, they did the same thing, watered down pc etc

i dunno let borys explain, ive only got a generally idea

I'm certainly more angry at PC gamers than anyone else at this point. Most of the people I know who play PC games have done so without actually paying for the games. They can drop $500 on a video card to play Crysis, but the game itself, that has to be free or they won't play it. Worse yet is that some of these cunts are so ignorant that they from time to time go into rants about the miserable state of PC gaming, and wonder aloud why developers have abandoned the platform.

Hardly.

I trash the Ps3/360 in equal amounts. It's just that Ps3 fanboys generally respond with tears over at Gaf, while 360 fans actually argue with me you know? They actually take my opinion for what it is.

It's funny, i have some Ps3 fans on my Psn friends list, and at the beginning they thought i just hated on Ps3 related stuff till they realized that it was different, i was pretty harsh on the 360 too.

But there's something about most Ps3 fanboys on gaf at least, that they can't take any kind of shit, while at the sametime they only give shit. Never saw so much irony in one forum.

That's the Reason why i was posting less and less on the gaming side, unfortunately, i happened to drop a harmless joke at a bad time. :( And i was having a blast in the OT too, specially with the Football (soccer) crowd. Goddamn mod had to spill blood.

Heck i spend 80% of my gaming time on the Ps3 these days.

this.

they have nothing beyond "you are an xbot!"

there's not a single character amongst them , perhaps Wollan, Faf and Pana was always excellent for a proper debate, but i think we've knocked the edges off him a bit! haha.

Now now, lectures on how to take things in stride with the top on would seem like rather a poor fit for anyone who has had to migrate to another forum in order to spew out excess bile (as well as finally get to loudly admit bias), and gain some perspective. Yes, I'm well aware that this includes me as well. I'm not going to argue that there aren't royal nutcases on the PS3 end of things, but that's hardly exclusive to that side. Neither is the victim complex exclusive to the xtard side, although recently it has certainly seemed to tip in favor of our festive Xs.

Speaking of which though, has anyone invited Busty here? He's always seemed like one of the more likable stards.

Ok so here's what.

We have Nib making up threads after threads about GT 360 bias and shit, doesn't get banned.

I made a thread about a Sony released statement, made no comments whatsoever, what happens? I get called by a bunch of insecure Ps3 fanboys, and end up being banned for trying to hard. Wow

Meanwhile, nib over there is being an hypocrite, damage controlling, definitely trying too hard to defend a Ps3 exclusive, in the Haze thread, what happens? Nothing.

But sure, Crushed got banned for defending Banjo(I don't like how banjo looks too but cmon, wtf was that). But hey, mods were trashing banjo, shit mods were trashing too human at the same time too, it was a party in that place.

And what's up with that shit back a few months ago when i got banned for defending Assassins Creed in its own official thread, while Folus, who was trolling Assassins Creed didn't. Why can Folus and Dante stealth troll every 360 game, yet nobody can say shit.

Why is it that 360 threads get trolled like shit, yet, that Mod Jim, with his snakified avatar makes his presence felt instantly in Ps3 threads?

Dude not so long ago if you saw someone making a 360 game > Ps3 game post, with pics, he would get insta ban, in the meanwhile you would get every 360 thread filled with Uncharted pictures. That was ok.

Wollan draws some comics (funny, sure), man it's comedy gold, you have Ps3 fans cheering and shit, it's amazing, bla bla bla, shogmaster or whatever draws a comic and suddenly everybody gets all serious.

Whatever, the gaming side over there is a piece of shit, and they got lucky they caught me that time, 2 times in a row i get banned for no valid reason, i almost stopped posting there, i just hang around in the OT.

Evilbore seems like a place where people can spit out the truth at least, a le fucking luia. Lets keep it real, fuck that fake shit that goes on at GAF gaming side.

Worse yet is that some of these cunts are so ignorant that they from time to time go into rants about the miserable state of PC gaming, and wonder aloud why developers have abandoned the platform.

You would be shocked at how things are where I live (Asia):

Stores sell you modded Wiis as a first option.
Stores sell you modded PS2s as a first option.
Stores sell you modded Xboxes as a first option.
Stores sell you modded Xbox 360s as a first option.
Stores sell you modded PSPs as a first option.
Stores sell you modded NDSs as a first option.

They are expecting you to buy the modded version. These are perfectly legit game shops that completely pass under the radar even when customs officers raid the malls where these stores are located.

You want to know why the Gamecube sold so poorly over here when the console launched? It was a bitch to pirate the games (at least initially).
You want to know why the PS3 is selling so poorly over here? You can't pirate the games.

I'll tell you what: people look at me funny when I say I want to buy Mario Kart Wii. "Just download it!" is what I hear. I'm blowing my money. This is from a guy in the office that has a hard drive with a little over 900 NDS roms on it.

The mainboard on my Wii burned out due to a short-circuit through no fault of the console. So here I am trying to repair it, and this other guy from the office tells me to not bother with replacing the mainboard when it costs 3/4 the price of a brand new Wii (I just want my saved games). "Just get a Wii and mod it, buy a few pirated games and you've recouped your investment." This is the same guy who goes every weekend to China and picks up a Wii game for five RMB - that's 65 cents. He gets bundled PSP CDs that come with assorted games for the same price.

All my recent PC games are purchased either off Steam or Direct2Drive. And honestly, when you have deals like the EIDOS pack or The Orange Box, there is really little incentive to pirate; the games come out for less than 10 bucks at times (by comparison, a pirated game here will sell for about 4USD, but by the time you factor in transportation and time it ends up costing about the same as "going legit"). Games don't cost that much on the PC. There are even free games to the caliber of Hitman, SC:CT or Far Cry if you are willing to put up with advertisements or being able to play the game for a limited period of time (not time-trials; you play the full game via a service, but you only have 1-2 months to play it). That, and abandonware: I just downloaded about 1,000 abandonware games via torrent; while 90% of those may be absolute shite or may not hold up well with time, I'll still have 100 free, legit games that I can play.

Besides, there is nothing wrong with the state of PC gaming. It's just going through its phase again, like a menstrual cycle. Every time a console cycle launches, there is this initial push by gamers to buy the latest consoles. The media goes into a frenzy, and euphoric gamers rush to buy the latest (pirated) games. Then in mid-cycle, the PC comes back with a vengeance.

It's been this way ever since the SNES days. Fact is, piracy has been rampant on both console and PC gaming since I can remember, and believe me, having lived in Asia for the greater part of my life, I've seen all there is to see about piracy - and then some. I'd even argue that piracy on consoles is much higher than it is with PC gaming, because most console gamers here will pirate console games, while PC users (not gamers) are not all into gaming, and may only pirate operating systems or applications.

Actually, that does sort of remind me of the homeland. I jokingly said to a friend here that the PS3 would never take off over there unless it becomes easy to play pirated games on the system, but really, it's not all that far fetched of a joke. Most of the people I knew who owned Playstation 1s back in the day had massive collections of mostly pirated games. The whole culture there is sort of weird, as piracy is considered pretty much alright. Hell, there are even pro-piracy organizations, although of course they consider themselves spokespeople for the "Information is Free" movement. Now, if it was only free to actually develop the products they want for free, eh?

On an MGS4 note, the game might be shit, but the soundtrack appears to be amazing. That should cushion the blow of buying the LE for an undesirable game.

all bets were off when people shit the bed over Turok.

You know, I can understand Bish being touchy about blatant trolling, but I thought it was pretty lame that he dodged some pretty reasonable questions. I believe one of my questions was in regards to the decidedly outdated view bob, asking if the retail version would allow you to turn it off, and instead of responding to those types of questions, the focus was all on griping about people trolling the game. That was pretty disappointing.

But, the victim deal among Xtards is becoming unbearable. Yes, Too Human gets trolled, lots. It also receives valid criticism, but that's of course viewed as trolling too. But then so did Haze, didn't it? And that was open for free trolling before gameplay impressions had actually come in. Of course, some games are off-limits, but then that's true for Xbox titles as well. I saw plenty of people receive long bans for dogging on the early media of Halo 3, with Bish being the frontrunner among the mods that actively searched out Halo 3 trolls. So really, it's not as one-sided as the various camps would like people to believe. And getting upset over supposed unfair treatment doesn't exactly mesh with claims of that particular fanbase somehow having a tougher skin.

One of those things that Konami doesn't want us to talk about is the 'total length of cut-scenes'. Hopefully it won't be bending the rules to far to reveal that they represent about half of the content of the game. That, for some people, will be too much to bear.

If only MGS4 did end there. An unbelievably lengthy and self-indulgent epilogue - you can't call it a cut-scene, it's an entire film in its own right, and a deeply boring one too - is how Solid Snake's career comes to a close. Too bad, but no hard feelings; you can ignore it if you wish. The drawn-out sentimentality is fitting, in a way. Snake may have started out as a gruff, two-dimensional cliché, but he bows out very gracefully in Metal Gear Solid 4, assuming the mantle of the world-weary samurai, or the enigmatic nameless cowboy from a spaghetti western, as if it were always his. David Hayter's voice performance isn't much more than an attempt to create the gravelliest, throatiest croak ever recorded by man, but as such, it's heroic.

You're sorry to see Snake go. But should you be? Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it. It just burrows deeper into what fans love and detractors hate than ever before, and it will make few converts. It's a crying shame, given how many genuinely classic gaming moments there are here, given the countless exquisite creative touches, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is its own worst enemy. You could not ask for a funnier, cleverer, more ambitious or inspired or over-the-top conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series, but it's definitely time to move on.

We love you, Snake. Don't come back.

(Take note, however, that there are several minutes of install time to be endured, not just at the start, but before each act - albeit graced with a fantastic animated graphic of Snake smoking next to some health warnings.)

Halfway through this section, a novel gameplay idea, a rousing on-rails shoot-out, and some thunderous cut-scene entertainment succeed in sustaining interest until the next episode. It's at this point that Kojima pulls the rug from under your feet. The MGS4 you were expecting, it turns out, is no more than half of the game you get.

We're not going to explain how, because everything that follows deserves not to be spoiled - not the plot, but the string of ideas that break Metal Gear Solid down and rebuild it, in several brilliant and surprising ways, before the game is done. The first of these is such a precise and enthralling distillation and of stealth gaming that it's a shame more people won't see it, but it's worth saving for the way it takes you unawares. Each time, atmospherics, graphics, tone and gameplay revisions mesh perfectly down to the tiniest detail, as Kojima Productions bombards you with references and mood-swings that leave your head in a spin. 1940s 'noir' cinema, the Iraq war, beat-'em-ups, Halo... take your pick.

Seems like the multiple installs is the preliminary install being split up between the acts. So instead of one install of 20 Minutes, you get multiple ones that take 5 minutes or something. I personally would rather have the whole thing isntall at once.

Its funny how switching disks is probably quicker than installing a whole other section of the game :lol

But the 360 pwnt in this regard, the game really must be that huge but it has to be the cutscenes that are doing this but the cutscenes are using in game assets right? MGS cutscenes aren't prerendered so its not like these are some super bitrate videos or something.

I don't get why they'd have to be hush hush about cutscene length. Isn't that an MGS trademark? Or are they afraid that it's going to turn off newcomers to the series? Feels like that's a weird concern, given that it's #4 in one of the most ass convoluted game series that has ever existed.

Anyway, trust in the site aside, the Eurogamer reviews reads like a great buyer's guide. Praise for the things that existing fans are bound to adore, and a word of caution to those who may have held out hope that it'd be an accessible game.

it's the trust rollercoaster ! I see IGN is suddenly credible again after it's 9.9 review!  ::)

No, Eurogamer has been on the can't be trusted shitlist for a while. Including factually incorrect stuff in a review tends to have that effect. And it's a damned shame as the writing has always been a cut above. I like this review though, because it actually serves as a buyer's guide. That thing you do where you complain about others taking a too wide brush fanboy approach to things? Yeah, you're the one with the wide brush right now.

edit: Hold on a second, IGN gave the game a 9.9? Really? That sounds ridiculous, although I guess not surprising coming from that site.

Well written reviews influence me to an  extent, but scores are just stupid.

Something like that. The Eurogamer review here is very useful for me, as it actually offers valuable information for people other than already die-hard MGS fans. There are some "issues" with previous MGS games, and this particular review actually makes it clear whether or not those issues are still there, and to what degree. A truly well written review shouldn't even really need a score attached to it; the relative value of the game should be obvious by the information in the review.

Seems like it's the PERFECT MGS game for MGS fans. If you wanted something... uh... non-wacky jappy then you're out of luck.

Look, I don't think it is necessary or even smart to troll this game now.

What do I expect from FF13? To be the best FF game ever. To have everything I loved in FF games. I guess the same goes for MGS4. People don't want something different, they want MOTS!

Trolling, no. I just honestly wanted to know if it'd be accessible for someone who hasn't been too fond of the quirks in previous MGS games. It's a shame, because there's so much about this game that is brutally appealing. It was expected that it'd be fan service, wasn't sure to what extent though.

That's true, but a review might be enough to make me decide if it's even worth it for me to find out for myself. Especially when I know what signs to look for. In this case, I'll wait to read a few more good reviews before I decide, but the Eurogamer review is a "good" start.

On a separate note, why in the hell do people assume that it's alright to just openly spoil other story-driven pieces (movies or games)? One more fucking movie spoiler in an official thread for something entirely different and I might just go ahead and spoil whatever the official thread is for.  :bowser

If MGS4 is on par with the rest of the series, 8 is as close to a correct objective review as you're going to get.  As good as the gameplay is, Kojima has never learned to tell a story without disruptive exposition.

edit cliffnotes
- Opening act is the best part
- Not a game for MGS outsiders
- two cut-scenes near the 90 minute mark
- The Beauty and the Beast Unit are in the shadow of the MGS3 Cobra Unit.
- Camera flow effortless between 1st and 3rd person view
- Control system has "at last" the ideal balance of intuitvness and range.
- Game can be played for months rather than days.
- MGS4 is not the game it could of been, nor the game it should have been if you believed the early trailers (??)
- But is very faithful to its fans and delivers without equal in so many ways.

So, Edge decided to comment on what it "could or should" have been? That's always a dodgy approach, and not a very useful one either. I remember really growing to dislike critics for their Fable reviews some years back; if you can't stick to reviewing the actual game, the one that is available for people to actually buy, and instead go on about phantom qualities, then you really shouldn't be behind that particular buyer's guide.

Those 90 minute cut-scenes, why did the EGM dude who posts on NeoGAF claim that it wasn't true then? If it is, then god damn. Flies in the face of this:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11396957&postcount=469

Apparently, he doesn't actually know how to tell a story.

I enjoyed MGS2 a great deal, although go back and forth on it when I look back at it. I'm scared of MGS3: started the first level and the micro-management eating/hunting mechanic made me put it away as fast as possible. I can't stand stuff like that, I just can't. It's game-breaking for me, just like the one-save system in Dead Rising.

The message with MGS4 was that it'd scrub off some of the rough edges to reach beyond the hardcore fans: controls and obtrusive japanese complex design for the sake of complexity, super weird shit, cut scenes, codecs. But after playing MGO I don't have much faith in the controls and a polished/stream-lined interface. From reports cut scenes seem to be more, not less.
I really want to get into it.

I haven't heard of a hunger system in this game. It sounds as though its going to play like MGS2 in regards to just focusing on Stealth/Shooting with the addidtion of CQC. Also, what Edge states about the controls is interesting. Are the MGO controls exactly the same as its going to be in the Offline game?

Yeah, it definitely reads like fan service more than anything, and then catering to, at least for me, the wrong objects of the fan adoration. It's so attractive in so many ways, but as of right now, it'd appear as if it's less approachable than even I had expected.

In all honesty though, if any game is going to go "balls to the wall" fanservice, it should be the game that finishes off the series. Its like one big Hideo goodbye to Snake.

MGS4 is the 7th game in the Metal Gear series, and the one that supposedly wraps things up. I don't see how it couldn't be heavy fanservice at this point.

You can do fanservice and not have 90 minute cutscenes lol

Right. Although I suppose this confirms once and for all that MGS really is all about poorly directed cinema. I expected there to be lots of lengthy cutscenes, but this is definitely pushing it. Who knows though, maybe they really needed all that time to tell the story, but  it seems excessive, and not a good mark on Kojima as a director.

I guess I won't be borrowing this game off my friend lol

I thought this was supposed to be different from the others.

it is different in terms of gameplay and controls. i'm not sure what you're expect from the story or the amount of cutscenes when this is snake's final game and it's wrapping everything up.

and gamepro and ttp on gaf have said that there aren't any 90 minute cutscenes. don't really know who to believe anymore at this point, though ttp is pretty trustworthy.

anyway

i still can't fucking wait

omg

12 days

edit: and i'd so sit through a 90 minute cutscene in mgs4.

He is, which makes the whole complaint sound dodgy. And there was also an EGM guy who confirmed that there were no such cutscenes in the game. I guess timing might be relative to ones enjoyment of it, but I'd expect some honest information from a buyer's guide.

I have only two video game toys, which both shame me greatly as physical manifestations of my gaming faggotness.

One is the Iron Maiden/Regenerator from RE4. I bought it from a Spencers last year because it was in the bargain bin.

The other a clear Grey Fox/Ninja from MGS1. It's dusty as hell and the sword's gotten kind of warped, but I've had it for like 8 years, and I will cherish it forever.

The majority of my anime/gaming toys are in my office at work (I work at an elementary school, the kids think they're great). The only things I have here at home are all in the den: Perfect Grade Zeta Gundam model, a Grey Fox/Ninja Kubrick (as seen in my avatar), a stuffed Dragon Quest Slime, and a stuffed Totoro.

Sooo... Famitsu's review of MGS4 should be in this week's issue...

I'm sure others will laugh at me for this, but I really look forward to Groo, Lyte and Duckroll delivering the weekly Famitsu news on Tuesday evenings.
According to Kotaco they gave it a perfect score of 40.  :o

well fuck i just read some of the spoilers leaked with the strategy guide

goddamn it kojima this spiral into fanservice and "tying things together" by putting established characters into different scenarios for no reason started in mgs3, went over the top in mpo, and it's way too stupid here

fuck it, not every goddamn character has to have been involved with every little thing

Oh great, i'm one step away from becoming an internet celeb -_-

BTW, finished act 2, if the game continues to be this fucking awesome, I might just faint from all the blood going to my penis.

Also, I was having trouble, because I was using one hand, and I don't normally do that so yeah.

Also to confirm, there is loading before each act, loading being about 3 mins each, lets call it a coffee/tea break.

I think if the acts are split up correctly, the loading times between each act won't be too bad. Sounds as though its really set up like an interactive movie :lol . Its all good though MGS4 :bow

The moment I heard about the installation between acts, the first thing I thought of was it had been designed for a possible (5 disc) 360 release.  :(

Oops, I meant to add  if it underperformed.

It's funny people are worried about 3-minute installs every x hours, because I have my computer set up to enforce a 3-minute break every hour, otherwise my eyes, wrists and brain start getting fucked up after a while.

Anyone who deliberately and actively seeks to spoil the gaming experiences of others is a genuine scumbag who desperately needs to distance him/herself from the whole console wars shit because it's clearly starting to rot too deep. I don't give a fuck what game it is, it's just a prick thing to do.

That said, if it matters that much, these people should probably just stay the hell away from the internet, and certainly dedicated MGS4 threads, for the next few weeks.

All I'm gonna say is this: Kojima's going to be walking a very fine line here.

If he pulls this off, it will be great. If it's not done correctly, it'll seem utterly distinguished mentally-challenged and will only seem "good" to dumbasses like Shane Bettenhausen.

There is a difference between "Tom Clancy/comic book" style melodrama and "jumping the shark, disregarding of everything that made the past games good."

I still say this is just par for the course for the Metal Gear series.  It's ALWAYS been convoluted and iffy, but its still interesting and has carried the series together very well.

I'm not mad over the convolution or far-outness of it. I'm upset that it reeks of sloppy writing, retcons, and reset buttons.
